Getting Schooled
by Emma Chase

  Head of the class...

Garrett Daniels has this whole life thing figured out. The cocky, charismatic former high school star quarterback is an idolized football coach and "cool" teacher in the hometown where he's not just a golden boy — he's platinum. He has good friends, a great house on the lake, and the best damn sidekick a man could ask for: Snoopy, the albino beagle. Then...Callie Carpenter comes home. And knocks him right on his tight end zone.

  Back to school...

Callie has a pretty sweet life herself...on the other side of the country. But circumstances — that she'd prefer to never speak of again — have brought her back home, helping out her parents and substitute teaching at her old high school. Now she's facing bickering, raging hormones, constant gossip, awkward weirdness, and drama galore...and that's just the teachers.

  Just like old times...

When Garrett offers to show his former high school sweetheart the secrets of his winning teacher ways, Callie jumps at the chance - and then has to stop herself from jumping him. Good friends are all they can ever be. Or...these teachers just might end up getting schooled — hard — by love

EXCERPT:

High school parking lots are one of the most dangerous places on earth. I don’t have statistics to back that up…but I know it’s true. I pull into the school parking lot Monday morning in my Dad’s giant, newly repaired mint-green Buick, with Back in Black by AC/DC blasting from the speakers. I feel tough, powerful—like I’m driving a tank. I’m a badass teacher—I’ll run you down even if you’re a student—I’ve got twenty-nine more in class just like you. The outfit helps too—leather boots, blue jeans, a starched white blouse and a black leather jacket. It’s my armor. The morning air is cool and crisp today, but I barely feel it. I’m locked and loaded and ready to roll. As I march towards the main entrance, I spot Garrett and Dean and Alison Bellinger outside the doors. They pause when they see me, waiting. “Damn,” Dean chuckles. “Callie’s got her shit-kickers on. Did you dig them out of a mosh pit from 1993?” Garrett crosses his arms. “Somebody’s channeling Michelle Pfiefer in Dangerous Minds.” He looks fantastic. His hair is tousled from the breeze and kisses his brow, and he’s wearing a dark blue sweater that’s snug around his biceps and soft, worn, light blue jeans. I remember his arms around me yesterday on my parent’s porch. The wonder and exhilaration of the moment. Of him. The intensity in his eyes, the desire and possessiveness in the grasp of his hands. The scorching feel of his mouth, his wet talented tongue that made my stomach swirl and my head spin. So much for not complicating things. But I’m not going to play head games with myself or Garrett—we’re too old for that shit. I have feelings for him—I always have—our break-up had nothing to do with either of us not wanting each other desperately. But these aren’t just leftover echoes of a sweet, first love—this is something new. A throbbing, breathless attraction to the amazing man he’s become. I want to be near him. I want to know him, inside and out, all over again. And he feels the same way. Garrett wants this version of me as much as he always did—maybe even more. I heard it in his whispered words and felt it in his kiss. I don’t know if we have a future, if it can go anywhere. We have separate lives on opposite ends of the country. But I’m not going to worry about that—for now, I’m going to take each day as it comes and enjoy every moment we can. Except for now. Now is not the time for enjoying or worrying or relationship building…now is the time for focusing. Now is the time to be ice and steel—don’t smile, don’t waver. “Little fucknutters don’t know who the hell they’re dealing with,” I growl. Allison pumps her fist. “That’s the spirit.” Garrett opens the door for me. “Go get ‘em, Gangster’s Paradise.”

REVIEW:

4.5 stars
****

This book was so good! I really enjoyed Getting Schooled! This is Garrett and Callie's story. They dated all through high school, but went their separate ways when they graduated and went to college far from each other. Now, 16 years later, Garrett is a high school teacher and football coach at their former high school in their hometown. Callie's parents get into an accident and she must move back home for a year to take care of them and stay with them as they go through rehabilitation. She gets a job at the same local high school teaching theater. There she meets back up with Garrett and, as they spend time together, they realize their feelings for each other are still strong. They have an easy, sweet relationship that grows stronger as they spend more time together. Garrett and Callie are more mature and stronger together now as adults and they are ready to face their happy future together.

I loved that this was a second chance romance with no hard feelings between the couple. They dated in high school and broke up because they went to college on opposite sides of the country. There was only good memories between them and they were very happy to see each other again.

I loved Garrett and Callie together. They fit so well that it was easy to feel like they belonged together and it was easy for them to slip back into a relationship. They both had dated others during their separation, but never had fallen in love again. The fact that they both now teach at the same school where they first fell in love was sweet and funny, just like they were together. They loved each other so much. I really liked Garrett's laid back, easy, confident attitude and how much he adored Callie. He was such a nice guy. I really liked Callie too. Also, I loved Garrett's relationship with his students and athletes, as well as Callie's with hers'. Both were great teachers. I loved the small town atmosphere and townsfolk. There was a super sweet ending with 3 epilogues, which I loved.

Getting Schooled had great humor, sweetness and a simple, low angst love story. I really enjoyed this book! I am really looking forward to more from this series and Emma Chase in the future!

Blackburn
by Brynne Asher

Blurb:

She’s my employee.
I’m her boss’s boss. Hell, I own the company.
Pursuing Lillian Burkette was a line I shouldn’t cross.
Until a work trip from hell changed everything.
I didn’t just step over the line. I annihilated the damn thing.
When it comes to her, there’s nothing I wouldn’t do. I’d even kill for her.
When they say the corporate world is a jungle … they have no idea.

Warning: This book is not appropriate for readers under the age of eighteen.

A great little novella that packs a big punch! Blackburn has suspense, sexiness, and emotion with a dash of humor. I can't give a lot away about the plot without spoiling the book. I'll just say this is a boss's boss/ employee romance but it's not set in the office, instead in the wilds of Nicaragua. This book is so original and an easy, fast paced read. I really liked this story. I loved Gabe Blackburn and I liked Lillian a lot too. Gabe is badass, protective, strong and smitten with Lillian, while she was sweet and kind. They ended up being a very cute couple, and the trials they endured together bonded them quickly. This book has a very cinematic quality. I could picture it clearly and could see it being an action/adventure movie. Even though the book was not a full length novel, it still felt plenty long for a novella. Of course, I would have loved even more from the couple anyway. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more from Ms. Asher!

EXCERPT:

I sit down in the desk chair and lean back, balancing on the hind legs like my mother always told me not to. I fold my hands behind my head, put my feet on the desk, and sigh with contentment. Because life is sweet. It’s going to be a great year. They’re not all great—some years suck donkey balls—my best players graduate and it’s a rebuilding year, which means a lot of ‘L’s’ on the board, or sometimes you just get a crappy crop of students. But this year’s going to be awesome—I can feel it. And then, something catches my eye outside the window in the parking lot. Someone. And my balance goes to shit. I swing my arms like a baby bird, hang in the air for half a second…and then topple back in a heap. Not my smoothest move. But right now, it doesn’t matter. I pull myself up to my feet, step over the chair towards the window, all the while peering at the blond in the navy blue pencil skirt walking across the parking lot. And the ass that, even from this distance—I would know anywhere. Callaway Carpenter. Holy shit. She looks amazing, even more beautiful than the last time I saw her…than the first time I saw her. You never forget your first. Isn’t that what they say? Callie was my first and for a long time, I thought she’d be my only. The first time I laid my eyes on her, it felt like getting sacked by a three-hundred pound defensive lineman with an axe to grind. She looked like an angel. Golden hair framing petite, delicate features—a heart-shaped face, a dainty jaw, a cute nose and these big, round, blinking green eyes I wanted to drown in. Wait…back up…that’s not actually true. That’s a lie. I was fifteen when I met Callie, and fifteen year old boys are notorious perverts, so the first thing I noticed about her wasn’t her face. It was her tits—they were full and round and absolutely perfect. The second thing I noticed was her mouth—shiny and pink with a bee-stung bottom lip. In a blink, a hundred fantasies had gone through my head of what she could do with that mouth…what I could show her how to do. Then I saw her angel face. That’s how it happened. And just like that—I was gone. We were “the” couple in high school—Brenda and Eddie from that Billy Joel song. The star quarterback and the theater queen. She was the love of my life, before I had any fucking idea what love was…and then, still, even after I did. We broke up when she went away to college and I stayed here in Jersey—couldn’t survive the distance. It was a quiet ending, when I went out to visit her in California, no drama or hysterics. Just some hard truths, tears, one last night together in her dorm room bed, and a morning of goodbye. She never really came home again after that. At least, not long enough for us to run into each other. I haven’t seen her in years—in a lifetime. But she’s here now. At my school. And you can bet Callie’s sweet ass I’m going to find out why.

REVIEW:

4 stars
****

This was a fun way to check in with some of my favorite characters by Stylo Fantome! Here are my thoughts on the stories in this anthology:

The Bad Ones- Great check in with Con and Dulcie! They are still in love and still wild and crazy, living life by their own rules.

My Time in the Affair- This was a quick check in with Mischa and Tal. I haven't read their book, but I still enjoyed this slice of what their life is like.

The Mercenaries: Law- This is a scene from Law's book, which I can't wait for. I love this series and it seems like it's been forever since I read it. It might be time for a reread. I would have liked a check in with Marc and Lily, too.

Muscle Memory- I didn't love this book so that affected my enjoyment of the story. I'm not a fan of love triangles and cheating.

Twin Estates- This check in was a cute, sweet and funny catch up with the whole gang, especially Katya and Wulf. Loved it!

While I was Away- This is a new story that is hopefully a start to a new book! It was cool, different and interesting. Maybe a fantasy book? Reminded me a little of a take on the Wizard of Oz for some reason.

The Kane series- Aww, a good check in with Tate, Jameson and Sanders! There is a bit of a scary moment but it all turned out okay in the end and they were all stronger for it.

Overall, this book was a really great check in with some of my faves. I was a little disappointed that there was no story for Junk in the Trunk, because it is my fave by Stylo and I love it. But, still, I really enjoyed this anthology. I can't wait for Law's book and for 'While I was Away' to be a book, too. A great group of scenes to catch up with what my favorite Stylo Fantome's characters have been up to!

Author Bio

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…

THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)

William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.

THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)

Josey Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally get her shi…uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.
What she needs is an apartment with free rent.
Will is convinced Josey will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Josey is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.

Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.

When I saw how spotless the shared living space was, I allowed my curiosity to get the better of me and peeked my head into her bathroom, Rocky dancing around my feet as I entered the space. The counters were covered in woman-products, but the marble surface and sink were free of water spots, and the glass of the shower had been wiped clean. I glanced at Rocky. He glanced at me. Bemused, I chuckled to myself, about to turn back to the door, and that’s when I spotted it. A dildo. A big, Pyrex dildo. With ridges. In the shower. I froze, blinked, and I stared at it, my brain sluggish. Oddly, I had to remind myself to breathe. Likely because I was . . . I was— I was shocked. I shook myself, tearing my eyes from it and rubbing my chest where an odd kind of pang was spreading mild warmth up my neck. But why was I shocked? Why should I be surprised? Despite my never seeing her that way, Josey was a woman and women have needs. Don’t they? I hadn’t grown up around women—any women. My mother died when she had my youngest brother. My grandmother died before I was born. I had no sisters. We lived on a farm, way out in BFN Oklahoma. Girls—women—and their bodies were sacred lands of the unknown to us Moore boys. Unbidden—completely unbidden—an image of Josey flashed through my mind’s eye. Her full lips parted, her big eyes closed, causing her thick black lashes to catch droplets of water before they dripped over her sharp cheekbones. Her head would be lolled back as shower spray melted bubbles of slippery soap, sliding down her bare skin as they dissolved. Her legs would be parted, and maybe one hand would be braced against the wall of the shower while the other moved in a steady rhythm. Holding that huge, glass dildo. I swallowed a sudden rush of salvia and, unable to help myself, I leaned closer to the sex toy, examining it and comparing its size against my own. I was bigger. But not by much. And for some reason, this realization made me instantly hard. Crap. Of course I knew Josey was a woman, but until this moment, I’d never really thought of her that way. Not even the tampon-mountain drove the point home. Up until this point, she was someone I liked as a person, someone who made me laugh, who was smart and compassionate, someone around whom I felt completely comfortable. A good—no, a great companion. She was still all of those things, except— Except now I’ve pictured her naked.

EXCERPT:

“Hello. I’m Jax.” His voice was deep but there was a musical quality to it. She would bet he could sing. “This is my brother, Tucker.” Brothers. They oddly didn’t look a lot alike, but she’d seen siblings who she would never have guessed came from the same parents. Tucker wasn’t bad himself. Dark, wavy hair any woman would love to have. It was slightly overgrown but did nothing but enhance his male-model beauty. He seemed far softer than his incredibly masculine friend. Her first impression of Jax hadn’t been false. He was broad and muscular, his face defined by stark planes and lines. He looked predatory and hungry. She could barely breath. Maybe this was a mistake. She would have a hard time watching this gorgeous man fawn all over Heather. Something about him pulled her in, made her want to forget that she had terrible taste in men. It was like there was some invisible tether connecting her to him. Except that was stupid because he couldn’t be here for her. “I’m Heather and my very quiet friend’s name is River.” Heather was smiling that ridiculously sunny smile of hers, the one no man could resist. “Thanks for the fries. You know normally men send over drinks. I’m glad you’re so concerned with consent. That’s very forward thinking of you.” Tucker shook his head. “We’re not allowed to have sex without consent. Do we need a note? Like a contract?” Jax jabbed an elbow in his brother’s ribs. “He’s being a weirdo and moving way, way too fast. Sorry about that. He doesn’t get out much.” Tucker frowned and said something under his breath that sounded like neither do you, but then a sweet smile came over his face. “Sorry. Sometimes my jokes fall flat. Can we please join you? We’re in town for a week or so and besides the Russian dude, we haven’t met anyone.” “Sure.” Heather slid over. River did the same, expecting Tucker to slide in next to her, but it was Jax’s big body that moved beside her. She felt tiny compared to him. She watched as Heather grinned her way as though to say you were wrong. Tucker sat beside Heather and started passing out the small plates. Jax probably wanted to be able to look at Heather. That was it. God, he smelled good. She kind of wanted to lean over and run her nose along his shoulder and up his neck. He smelled like soap and sandalwood. “Can I get you some? I like French fries but they’re even better with cheese and bacon. I think maybe everything is better with cheese and bacon, but if you want something else, I’ll get it for you. You can have anything on the menu. And I’ll buy the wine or beer or whatever. I merely wanted you to understand I don’t want to get drunk tonight. I would rather get to know you.” She turned, expecting to see Jax staring across at Heather. Nope. Those stunning green eyes were staring at her expectantly. He had a plate in his hand as though waiting for her permission to serve her. Her. He was looking at her. “She does talk,” Heather said. “I’ve heard her and everything.” “Yeah, I would love some.” She was hungry, actually. It was odd. Her stomach kind of rumbled, but in a good way. For the last year and a half it seemed she’d lost her appetite and had to force herself to eat, but tonight she smelled the fries and cheese and bacon and wanted. And she wanted him, too. She wasn’t going to lie to herself. This time she would be smart. If he turned out to be a nice guy, she might spend the night with him. Might. And then she would send him on his way because he was a tourist. She wouldn’t fall for him because she wouldn’t spend more than a night.

He stared at me for a long moment. “You’re sure she’s mine?” “She’s yours.” “Then that’s good enough.” “I—really?” I blinked. He didn’t want to verify paternity? He just . . . trusted me? He nodded. “Really.” “I swear, I tried to find you, Logan. On my life, I swear it. But the hotel wouldn’t give me your name no matter how much I begged. And you paid cash for your drinks and never mentioned your last name. I tried, but I just . . . didn’t know where to start.” “It’s not your fault. I believe you.” The sincerity in his voice made my throat burn. Goddamn it. I was going to cry. I’d worked so hard not to cry today. I’d fought to keep my emotions in check and my head from spinning out of control. But this was going to make me break. I wanted so badly for Logan to believe that I hadn’t kept Charlie from him intentionally. The fact that a man like him would trust someone like me without proof meant more than he’d ever know. “Thank you,” I choked out past the lump in my throat. “So, um, is Charlie inside with your husband? Or boyfriend?” The urge to cry disappeared and I barked out a laugh. “Smooth.” He chuckled. “It’s been a long day for me. Give me a break, will you? This morning I was in New York, then I came to Montana for a business meeting and discovered a daughter. I’m off my game.”

REVIEW:

3.75 stars

This was a pretty good book. This is Thea and Logan's story. Thea was a bartender in a hotel in NYC when she met and had a one night stand with Logan. That night resulted in a pregnancy and Thea had no idea of Logan's last name or how to get in touch with him. Single and pregnant, she left the city to move to Lark Cove, Montana to live with her surrogate mother and brother. Now, five years later, Logan comes to Lark Cove on business and comes into the bar Thea works at. They immediately recognize each other, and right away she tells him he is a dad. Logan is shocked at first and immediately starts to figure out how to be a father and to arrange his life so he can spend time with his daughter, Charlie. Neither Thea or Logan ever forgot the connection they had that one night together and it only gets stronger as he spends time with her and Charlie. Logan is determined not to let the chance at love with Thea get away from them again. They have some big hurdles to overcome (family drama, long distance between them, work issues, and Thea's fear of abandonment), but it all works out between them in the end.

I liked Thea and Logan. They both had fears based on their pasts that were understandable. Logan was a little frustrating at times, for wanting Thea to move to NY, even though she told him she adamantly didn't want to. He mentioned it way too often in his internal thoughts that she definitely was going to move and that he could convince her. So that bothered me, but overall, I liked them. I love secret baby romances and I liked that aspect of the story a lot. Their little girl, Charlie, was cute and written age-appropriately. I also liked the small town feel and the fun side characters. The story was interesting, as well. This book had a lot of elements I liked, but something was missing for me. I couldn't fully connect to the couple and their emotions, and I'm not sure why.

Still, I was entertained by this book and I did enjoy it. I definitely recommend it to fans of small town, second chance romances! I look forward to the next book in the series, which looks really good, and more from Ms. Perry in the future!

He’s That Guy.
You know, the hero in almost every romance novel.
The super-rich, powerful CEO who is beyond sexy. Lives in a penthouse. Is wicked in bed. Has massive…feet. Yeah. That one.
Well, I found him.
I’m a writer who has spent years searching for the perfect muse.
Now that I know he exists, I have a mission.
To make him fall in love with me.
This should be easy. I mean, I have issues, but above all, I’m a great catch.
Problem is, I did a stupid thing.
And now he hates me.
Unfortunately for him, he’s my That Guy.
And he’s going to love me….
Whether he wants to or not.

Excerpt:

His lips are smooth, but not soft. They’re too powerful. Too demanding. Too dominant to be considered soft. His tongue? It’s soft. He drags it across my bottom lip. Then my top. Bypassing my teeth because unlike me, he’s not an enamel licker. And unlike him, I’m not an asshole. So I take the hint and open my mouth wider so he can devour me. And taste me. And I can taste him. And guess what…
He tastes like whiskey and mint.
I don’t know where the mint came from, but trust me the cool hint of spearmint is there. I make a mental note to see how much a bottle of that twenty-four-hour mouthwash he uses runs on Ebay.
I whimper when his hand slides into my hair. He growls at the noise. Tightens his hold. Curls his other hand around my waist and pulls me closer to him. This time when I stumble, he catches me. Or should I say his chest catches me. Either way, I’m pressed against that unyielding, concrete slab he wears beneath his shirt.
Slow.
He kisses me so slow. How can something so languid, so tantalizing, so consuming be so damn passionate? Hell if I know. But this guy? He can do it.
I never want it to stop. God please don’t let it stop. His hand slides to the side of my neck. Cups my cheek. Thumb rubs along my jaw. He pulls his tongue back but keeps his lips on mine. Pressing soft, sweet kisses across the swell of my bottom lip. I fight the urge to jab my tongue back into his mouth because I know the kiss is coming to an end.
I’m boneless when he pulls his mouth from mine. But he keeps me pinned to him. So close I can still feel his warm breath on my bruised lips. My eyes flutter open and I gaze up to meet his. Those whirlwinds of color darken by the second with some unspoken promise that I pray is something dirty and erotic.
“That, Penelope, was a kiss.”
