New Release: Antanasia by Sarah Curtis + Review!

Antanasia by Sarah Curtis is now available!

There's a reason she worked for the dead--she didn't play well with the living.

Touched by tragedy at a young age, Catherine Adams always knew her calling was to stand for the dead. Now, as a homicide detective for the LVPD, she fulfilled that role by finding them justice.

Dispatched to the Antanasia Hotel, Cat was prepared for her next case.

What she wasn’t prepared for was its reclusive owner, Rafe Alexander.

Or his unwavering pursuit of her.

Though dedicated to the badge, the feelings Rafe awakened in her and the undeniable attraction between them had Cat thinking there might be room in her life for more than just the job.

But then unanswered questions in both the case and her personal life start piling up, and her murder investigation took twists and turns she never saw coming, forcing Cat to question whether the world was as black and white as she’d always believed.

And making her wonder if she was ready to learn the answers she was so dead set on finding.

Or would some truths be more than the detective in her could live with?

This is a good read! Antanasia is the first book in a new series by Ms. Curtis. This book is one you should go into blind so as not to spoil the surprises. I will say this is Cat and Rafe's story. Cat is a homicide detective investigating a murder at the swanky Antanasia hotel in Las Vegas. There she meets Rafe, the mysterious billionaire hotel owner. But this book is so much more than your average contemporary billionaire romance.

This book has a bit of a darker and more gritty feeling than other books by Ms. Curtis. Cat is an intriguing character. She is a tough detective who has seen a lot in her life. But meeting Rafe and feeling a connection to him helped her soften up and made her more relatable. I really liked she and Rafe together. He is protective and knows he wants a relationship with her, but is willing to play a long game and to go at Cat's pace. The suspense and mystery in the book ramps up right away, while the romance is more of a slow, simmering burn going on at the same time. I really liked the twists and turns in this book, as well as the sexy romance and mystery.

Overall, I found Antanasia to have an interesting and entertaining story with good suspense and a sexy romance. I can't wait to see what direction this series is going to go. I really enjoyed Rafe and Cat's journey and look forward to more!

The Billionaire's Fake Fiancée by Annika Martin
Release Date: April 28th

TBFF_ebook_amazon_kobo_ibooks.jpg

The Billionaire's Fake Fiancée, a sexy romantic comedy by New York Times bestselling author Annika Martin.

I’m no Prince Charming, and the last thing I want is a Cinderella.

My instructions were simple: scour the city for a fake fiancée who’s not my type at all. Have her on my jet Monday morning, dressed appropriately for a yacht vacation.
I need a woman believable enough to convince a certain client that I’ve changed my playboy ways…yet nothing like the supermodels and socialites I usually have on my arm.
Somebody too annoying to tempt me—no emotional entanglements, thank you very much. This is business only.

If she’s unfazed by my looks and wealth, all the better.
Should be easy. Right?

Apparently not, because my people go and hire Tabitha. My hairdresser.
What were they thinking? Yes, I said annoying, but I didn’t mean her, the most frustrating woman in the world.

Tabitha is sunshiny. She has a pet hamster. She loves Hello Kitty, and she gets under my skin like nobody else.

As if that’s not bad enough, the minute we step on deck, she thinks that certain people on the yacht are up to something shady—based completely on her soap opera knowledge.
She won’t listen when I tell her she’s being ridiculous.

But as the days go by, I find that we’re actually having fun. And our fake kisses are heating up. And suddenly her wild theories aren’t sounding so strange after all…

Excerpt:

“We need a practice kiss.” My gaze falls to her lips and my mind goes blank. “Did you not read the contract?” I bite out. “This relationship is to be purely platonic.” “Oh, I know. And before you think I’m jonesing to kiss you, please know, I’m just trying to do a professional job at this, and the kiss is important. Because I can tell you right now, when people do the fake engagement ploy and get busted, it’s often because they’re forced to do a first kiss in front of suspicious people. Everybody can tell a first kiss.” “Have you been involved in other fake engagement situations?” I ask. “No, but, you know, it’s a thing. Trust me.” “It’s a thing?” I ask, incredulous. “Well, on soap operas,” she adds. I groan. “Jesus Christ, save me from your ridiculous soap opera wisdom.” “What? There is a lot of life wisdom in soap operas.” I give her a hard look. “And the fact is, with people who have never kissed, there’s a lot of trepidation. They’re like, How do I start off? Where do I put my hands? Which way should I tilt my head?” “Those are not questions that would cross my mind during a kiss. Ever.” “Please. Spare me from the knowledge of what crosses your mind when you kiss a woman,” she says. “I’m just telling you, people aren’t stupid. They’re capable of recognizing a first kiss. We need at least one practice round. Unfortunately.” I swallow. Somewhere down on Wall Street, trading is in full swing. I have rates to check, reports to analyze, spreads to monitor, but the idea of pulling her to me and kissing her crowds all of that out. My hands flex. A practice kiss. I can’t think of a worse idea. “We’re not a couple who enjoys public displays of affection.” She does her playful wince. “Okay, buuuuuut…what happens when they toast our engagement? We can’t exactly shake hands.” Will people do that? Gather around and expect us to kiss in front of them? I focus on the window. The whole idea here was not to be tempted or distracted. “If I decide we need a practice kiss,” I inform her, “then and only then will we have a practice kiss. And I’ll do the kissing.” “It has to be more than a peck,” she says. “Just in case that’s what you’re imagining.” “Rest assured, a kiss from me would be the opposite of a peck.” “The opposite of a peck,” she echoes, as though she finds it funny. “The polar opposite.” My gaze has gone back to her lips. They’d taste like some sort of sugary berry. Her dark hair would be thick and cool in my grip, her ass soft and firm. My mind won’t stop spinning on kissing her, now. “I’m trying to help you pull this off,” she says. “Think of the times you’ve had a first kiss. The wild rush of it. The buzz of it. It’ll be so obvious.” I frown. Who the hell has she been sharing these mind-altering first kisses with? “Don’t worry, I get this is business,” she says. “You’re not at all the type of guy I go for, either.” “No? Do tell—what type of guy do you go for?” “For one, he would scoff at the idea of a private jet. And he would never wear or even possess cufflinks. Or if he did, there’d be a string attached to the cufflinks because he would’ve made them into an awesome toy for little Seymour. That would be a guy for me.” “Sounds like a loser,” I growl.

This was a cute book! The Billionaire's Fake Fiance is a standalone rom-com. Tabitha is good friends with a few of the other heroines from Ms. Martin's other books. She is a mobile, concierge hairdresser for high end clients. Every week, she cuts Rex's hair in his office.
He is rude and grumpy, but she takes it all in stride and tries to brighten his day. Her personality grates on his nerves, but he puts up with it because she doesn't act scared of his bark. A defamatory tabloid article paints him as a playboy, when he's really more of a reclusive workaholic. He must spruce up his image for his most important, conservative, matriarchal client. He is competing for her business. So Rex decides to hire woman to play his fake fiance on a two week yachting trip his client has invited him on. He wants a woman that he won't be interested in romantically or physically, so as not to complicate his trip. He makes a list of what he hates in a woman, so that his assistant can find the perfect woman for the job. Meanwhile, Tabitha has an injured wrist and is not able to continue cutting hair for a few weeks, so she is in need of money. Rex's assistant decides to hire Tabitha. She joins Rex on his yacht vacation, playing the perfect fiance and causing all of the other guests to fall in love with her fun personality. As Tabitha and Rex spend time together, sparks fly and feelings bloom. They also find themselves embroiled in a mystery involving his client's shady relative on the ship. Rex and Tabitha soon find their fake relationship is not so fake after all.

I enjoyed this book a lot. This couple were very much opposites attracted. Tabitha had such a fun, sunshiney personality, which I loved. Rex was grouchy with a soft gooey middle. They were a perfect match and just what each other needed. Rex is a little rude and cold at first, but he is drawn into Tab's charm. Rex finds he doesn't hate Tabitha's personality after all. He really adored her, even if he didn't know it at first. She is a little guarded because of men from her past and doesn't have serious relationships. Neither of them are interested in a relationship, but feelings develop between them and they decide to take a risk. I liked them both a lot, even if I wanted Tabitha to give in to her feelings a little sooner. Rex and Tabitha had a great opposites attract dynamic and amazing chemistry. The way the couple snuck around to investigate on this ritzy yacht was so fun. I definitely could see this book as a rom-com movie, similar in style to Murder Mystery. The yacht setting was a great one, too. I did want a few more happy times in the resolution after the climax and to see the couple together in their daily life, but that is a nitpicky, personal preference.

Overall, this was a cute, funny romantic comedy with some emotional moments. Rex and Tabitha were adorable together. It was fun seeing their relationship develop. I look forward to more from Ms. Martin in the future.

Cover Reveal: Hard Pass by Sara Ney

“Hard pass.”

That’s what the last girl I slept with said when she got her first sober glimpse of me. She laughed, walked out of my penthouse—and I never saw her again. It doesn’t matter that I’m a rich, professional athlete; what mattered was my face.

Beauty might only be skin deep for some—but I know better.

“Pay up.”

That’s what the last girl I spoke to said over the phone when I made her an offer she couldn’t refuse. Desperate to sell a set of rare baseball cards, she’s clever and entertaining. I’m instantly smitten, but nowhere ready to reveal myself. Thank god she has no idea who I am—or what I look like.

I’m a professional athlete--how hard can playing the love game be?

Review

Starbreaker is the second book in the Endeavor series and the continuation of Tess and Shade's story. In book one, Nightchaser, we met Tessa and her crew of space outlaws on the run from an evil overlord. While I didn't totally love book one, I enjoyed it in general and was intrigued enough to keep reading the series. The story continues in this book, where Tessa and Shade try to keep themselves alive and hidden while continuing to help those in need. Unfortunately, I didn't totally love this book either. Starbreaker was an okay read for me, but it had more negatives than positives in my opinion.

Starting out, I was a bit confused by the world building and I could have used a recap on the main series storyline. The intricacies in the story felt complicated, without enough explanation. The writing was rather dry and often slow moving. I wanted more romance between Tess and Shade to keep me interested. Tess didn't act like she loved Shade. She was much more focused on the rest of her life and problems, while he didn't seem that important to her. Shade adored her and she was his everything, but he was not hers'. There was a lot of angst and doubt between them, but very few happy moments. I didn't like Tess as much as in book one because of her treatment of Shade. But it wasn't just that that kept me from loving the book. I didn't find the story and writing interesting or compelling enough to keep my interest. I found it a bit of a chore to finish. I can't help feeling that this series lacks the charm of the Kingmaker Chronicles series, which I liked a lot. Unfortunately, I'm not sure I care enough about the characters or storyline to keep reading this series.

A Standalone Romantic Comedy

Add it to Goodreads

Book Blurb:

She wants to steal his Van Gogh. He wants to steal her heart. Some people would call Clementine Abernathy a criminal. She considers herself a modern day Robin Hood, who steals from the rich and gives to the poor. Not exactly on the up-and-up, but she knows what it's like to lose everything. Her latest heist involves swiping a priceless Van Gogh from its owner, who's supposed to be an egotistical trust-fund brat. Turns out Jack David is a sexy, kind-hearted man...and Clementine is in trouble. Falling for her mark would make her the World's Dumbest Conwoman, but Jack is charmingly persistent, always singing sweet songs in her ear. And that earth-shattering kiss? She never stood a chance. Now she's imagining a fresh start with this dashing man, but that means telling Jack about her past. And other nefarious sorts are after the same painting. Too soon, Clementine learns what it means to risk it all for love.

****

Don't Go Stealing My Heart is a great read! I love Kelly Siskind's writing. It is so fresh, quirky, fun and different. Her New Orleans Rush was one of my favorite books in 2019. Don't Go Stealing My Heart has that same signature style. You get so many fun characters and special touches- from an Elvis impersonator competition to matching pet lizards!

This is Clementine and Jack's story. Clementine was orphaned as a child and the man who raised her brought her up to be a con-woman and thief. She is now an adult, but she still does jobs for him and raises money from her thefts to send to an orphanage in India, in true Robin Hood style. She comes to a small town playing a judge to an Elvis tribute artist festival, planning to steal a famous painting of one of the town's residents, Jack. She meets him before she arrives in town when his car is stuck on the side of the highway. Not knowing who he is, she lets herself be seen as herself, instead of her made up con-persona. They have an instant connection, but things get complicated when they meet again in town and she discovers Jack is her mark. After spending time together, they explore their connection and she knows she can't steal from him. She must decide if she can give up her life of charity thieving and start over for love and Jack must decide if he can forgive her for her past when he finds out who she really is.

I really liked this story. It did start a little slow and the chemistry took a bit to feel. But the couple was a great match. I loved Clementine and Jack. They were fun, quirky characters with good banter and many layers to them. Clem was a great, kind person, totally at odds with her cat burgling past. She was conned herself and groomed into her lifestyle, thinking it was for charity and not knowing how wrong it was. Jack was shy at first and very sweet, but soon showed his strength and kindness, not to mention being an alpha in the sheets. They had a good, slow burn chemistry and an amazing soulmate connection. The end made me knock the rating just a bit, as I thought it was kind of abrupt. I didn't completely love the way the everything wrapped up and I wanted a bit more resolution overall. Still, I liked the book a lot, if not quite as much as New Orleans Rush. It was such a charming read with so many extra special touches.

Overall, I really enjoyed Clementine and Jack's sweet and quirky love story. I can't wait to see what Ms. Siskind comes up with next.
