Review:

3.75-4 stars
****

This was a good book! The Risk is book two in the Briar U series and it is Brenna and Jake's story. Brenna attends Briar University and her father is the hockey coach of their very competitive team.  She is a big hockey fan, friends with many of the Briar players, and she wants to be a hockey sportscaster. Jake is a future NHL star and the star hockey player for Harvard, Briar's main rivals. When he and Brenna meet they have instant chemistry, but their teams are enemies. Despite the fact that they keep running into each other and flirting, Brenna knows she can't be with Jake in any way. When she has the chance to get her foot in the door and work at a hockey tv network, the misogynistic potential  boss shoots her down because she is a woman. So Brenna decides to name drop that Jake is her boyfriend to try to get the job. Jake is more than happy to pretend to be her boyfriend and get more time with her. He trades her one real date for every fake date between them. Their relationship develops from there as flirty acquaintances to friends to more than friends.

I enjoyed this book. Brenna and Jake were great characters. Brenna is very confidant, funny, and fiesty. It took me a little bit to warm up to her, but I grew to like her once I really got to know who she was underneath that confidence.  Jake is also confidant and funny, but also not arrogant at all. They were a power couple in the making. There were some moments that were a little too angsty NA-ish to me, with some soapy, immature drama. But I was able to overlook it because I enjoyed the characters and the story. I also enjoyed the side characters, but I also felt there was maybe a little much going on, making the book a little long.  Still, I enjoyed the way the conflict resolved and the ending was cute. I did want a little further ahead time jump in the epilogue ( <spoiler> and some nookie after the conflict resolved </spoiler> ). But, this was good.

Overall, I enjoyed The Risk. I like the humor, emotion and fun characters in this series. I can't wait for more from Briar U and Elle Kennedy!
