An emotional friends to lovers
romance full of risky secrets and
late-night lessons in seduction.

Dylan is my best friend, and the only person
in my life who understands me. He doesn’t
mind my social awkwardness or my
weird history. The only glitch? He
doesn’t know that I’ve been hopelessly,
desperately in love with him since
the first day we picked apples
together in his family’s orchard.

But I know better than to confess.

Now that we’re both in college together,
I’m seeing a new side of him. College
Dylan drinks and has a lot of sex. None
of it with me. Until the night
I foolishly ask him to tutor
me in more than algebra
and he actually says yes.

But the cool morning light shows
 me how badly I’ve endangered
our friendship. And I don’t know
if anything will be the same again.

Meet Me on Love Lane is the second book in the Hopeless Romantics series. I enjoyed this book more than the first book, but I still didn't completely love it. This is Charlotte's story. Charlotte grew up in the small town of Hope Lake, but when her parents got divorced, her mentally ill mother took her from the town and she never returned. Now, she is back for the first time in many years, as an adult. She lost her job in NYC and has returned to stay with her father and grandmother. She catches back up with old friends and family, falls in love with the small town, finds her dream job and rekindles a new love with her childhood friend, Henry.

I enjoyed this story in general. I liked Charlotte, as well as the fun side characters. Henry was an okay character, but didn't have much personality. I just felt like the book was more of a women's fiction book than a romance. The story is Charlotte's story of finding herself and finding a home. She has some repressed memories about her old town and friends that she must recover, as well as some amends to make for her long absence. She grew as a person and came into her own there. The romance was very lukewarm and I felt no chemistry between the couple. They were barely even friends for most of the book, with a first kiss at 89% and one fade to black love scene. They get a happy for now ending, but there are no "I love you"s exchanged. Also, the book was also a little slow moving and there were a few scenes skipped, which was confusing at times. Still, I found the book enjoyable in general. I liked the story and found it much better than the first book in the series.

Overall, Meet Me on Love Lane has some sweet moments and a good story. I enjoyed seeing Charlotte find herself and make a happy life for herself in her charming home town. I wished for more romance, but I still found the book entertaining. If you like women's fiction, you will probably really enjoy this book.

Instacrush is the second book in the Rookie Rebels series. This is Theo and Elle's story. Theo is an adorable, sweet and charming pro hockey player, with a big Instagram following and the nickname of Super Glutes. Elle is temporary living across the hall from him. She recently got out of the military and is at loose ends, so she is staying with a former army buddy turned hockey player on Theo's team. When Theo meets Elle, he is very interested in her, but she resists his advances. But she lets her guard down on Christmas and they have a hot one-day-stand... which results in a surprise pregnancy. Theo and Elle get to know each other and fall for each other, while working through some family issues that they both have. They make their own little family and get their HEA too.

I enjoyed this book. I expected it to be a little lighter, but instead, it was a rather heavy and emotional read. Elle was a prickly and sometimes grumpy character. I did like her by the end, but it took me a while to warm up to her. She had some family issues and a hard time trusting people. Theo was a sweet, sexy, puppy dog of a guy. Their relationship was kind of slow burn. Both of them had some baggage to get over before they were free to be together. And both of them made some mistakes, but they were able to learn how to love and let themselves be loved by the end. They made a good couple and they deserved the happiness they found together. I did feel like the conflict wrapped up a little too close to the end, but I still enjoyed the book. I love a surprise pregnancy book and this was a pretty good one.

Overall, I enjoyed Instacrush. Theo, especially, was an adorable and funny character. I was happy to see he and Elle happy together. I found this book to be sweet, sexy, emotional and entertaining. I look forward to more from this series and Ms. Meader in the future!

Excerpt

As Zeke worked on uploading the census records, I hoisted one of the many boxes from the Henderson’s donation onto the table. It kicked up an epic dust cloud. I reached inside to pluck out one of the moldering tomes of historical literature. Wrinkling my nose, I fought the urge to sneeze. Instead, I cleared my throat. When it still felt like I had swallowed a wad of sawdust, I coughed. And that was my grievous mistake. The force of the cough dislodged the Ben Wa ball, sending it into an epic downward dive. Yes, ladies and gentlemen the Ben Wa ball had left the building. Whirling away from Zeke, I used my hand to try an inconspicuous crotch shuffle to send the ball back to its point of origin. What happened next was truly against the laws of motion. Because the universe apparently hated me, the ball escaped the confines of my thong. As it started its descent down my thigh, I squeaked and clamped my knees together. “Are you all right?” Zeke asked behind me. I threw a glance at him over my shoulder. “Uh, yeah, I . . .” Okay, I had no idea how I was going to get out of this one. It wasn’t like I could say, “Well, here’s the thing. The Ben Wa ball I was using to strengthen my pelvic floor muscles to keep my vagina healthy for the D just slipped out and is about to make a very unhappy trail down my leg.” “I think a bug bit me or something.” “Oh no. Want me to take a look?” “No!” When Zeke’s eyes widened at my outburst, I said, “Sorry. I’m okay.” “If you’re sure.” “Totally.” “I think I might’ve found something interesting for your research.” The only thing I was interested in at the moment was getting the Ben Wa ball out of my pants without Zeke seeing it. “Oh?” “I definitely see some Native American female names.” Damn him for being enthusiastic about my research. The last thing I wanted to do was walk the couple of steps back over to him while trying to keep a Ben Wa ball from rolling down my pants leg. Since I couldn’t see any other way out of it, I nodded. Gritting my teeth, I started shuffling over to him. When I started lurching like Frankenstein’s monster, Zeke tilted his head curiously at me. “Are you sure you’re okay?” “Yep. Totally fine,” I muttered. Just as I reached his chair, my knee shifted because of what I imagined was panic sweat overtaking me. As the ball became dislodged, I bit down on my lip to keep from squealing again. There was no saving the ball now or my humiliation for that matter. As soon as it plopped onto my shoe, I flung my foot, sending it ricocheting into the desk. Of course, it’s size caused it to make a tremendous ching-ching noise, which in turn caused Zeke to rip his attention away from the screen. “What was that?” “What was what?” I questioned innocently. He furrowed his brows at me. “You didn’t hear that noise?” “Uh, no.” Plastering a smile on my face, I said, “I’m sorry. I was just so into what you were saying.” Ignoring my response, Zeke quickly assessed the area around us. After I’d flung the ball away, it had come to a rest to the right of his desk chair. When he bent over to examine the ball, I inwardly began screaming noooooo while at the same time cursing Estelle for even bringing the Ben Wa ball into my orbit. Since the universe hadn’t tortured me quite enough yet, Zeke picked up the ball. “Interesting,” he murmured as he twisted it between his fingers. I decided it was best to play absolutely and completely clueless in this situation. “What is it?” Silently, I prayed he wouldn’t respond with, “It looks like one of those sex balls you shove up your cooch.” “I don’t know. Maybe a part off one of the desks or chairs. I should probably give it to maintenance, so they can check all the furniture in here.” Oh hell no. Without a second thought, I snatched the ball out of his hands. Since I did it rather abruptly, Zeke’s surprise was apparent on his face. Waving my free hand dismissively, I said, “Don’t bother yourself with that. I’ll take it to them.” “Thanks, Finley.” After wheezing out a breath, I replied, “You’re welcome.” I jerked my thumb over my shoulder. “I’ll go do that right now.” I didn’t bother waiting for Zeke to reply. Instead, I power walked right out of the history room. I’m sure if he was watching me he would have been puzzled at my miraculous recovery, considering I’d been limping earlier. At the first trash can I could find, I deposited the Ben Wa ball. It seemed abundantly clear that neither I nor my vagina were quite ready to handle the responsibility.

Shelf Awareness is the fourth book in the Green Valley Library series, which is a spin off of the Winston Brothers series by Penny Reid and part of the Smartypants Romance world. This book was kind of a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed parts and did not enjoy others. This is Finley and Zeke's story. Finley walks in on her husband in bed with her male personal trainer. Heartbroken over the loss of her marriage, she leaves her job as a newspaper editor in Atlanta and moves to her grandmother's small town of Green Valley. There she lives with her grandmother, GramBea, her great aunt and their best friend, who are Tennessee's version of Golden Girls. She begins working at the library in town in the history room. There she meets Zeke, a computer guy who is a volunteer there and who is searching for his birth father. Eventually, they begin a romance.

This story was okay. I didn't feel like there was enough romance. It was more women's fiction and just Finley's story. There was no chemistry between the couple. Their romance was lukewarm and unromantic. They move from friends with benefits to dating at the end of the book. (view spoiler) . I just felt their relationship was rushed and underdeveloped. Much of the story's focus is on GramBea and her friends. They were good comic relief and kind of sweet, but also a little over the top at times. I also felt like the writing seemed amateur.

Overall, this story was interesting and I was entertained in general, even if I didn't totally love the book. I am still enjoying the Smartypants Romance books and look forward to reading more of them in the future.
