Review: The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne

I had the pleasure of finding a new-to-me author this year, whose work I loved, Kerrigan Byrne. I binge-read her Victorian Rebels series and loved them. The Highwayman was one of my favorite books of the year and one of the best books I've ever read. Here is my review:

The Highwayman was one of the best books I've read this year. So romantic, suspenseful, and emotional. This is Dorian and Farah's book and is set in Victorian times. I won't go into much detail about the plot because I think it's best to go into this one blind. But I will say theirs' is an epic romance that spans years. I loved the romance between the Blackheart and his Fairy!

The Highwayman was a fast-paced page-turner. There were lots of unpredictable twists and turns and amazing characters. The story was original and the writing exemplary. The swoon-worthy romance between Farah and Dorian was epic. This has to be one of the most romantic books I've ever read. There was no doubt that this couple were meant for each other. Their love suspended time and circumstances. Both had been through so much, especially Dorian. But the way they loved each other was truly amazing. The ending was so freaking sweet too.

Overall, I just loved this book. It is going on my favorites shelf for sure. I'm so glad I coughed up the money to buy this book. This was my first book by Kerrigan Byrne and now I'm binge reading the series. I can't wait to read more from her in the future!

“Let’s eat before we leave. I’m sure there’s quite the spread downstairs.” “Rich people breakfast?” I ask. She furrows a brow for a few seconds. “Yes. I suppose so.” Rolling away, she swings her legs around and stands up, stretching like a cat. “Do you eat rich people breakfast every morning?” My curiosity has been piqued. After a long yawn, she cocks her head to the side, lips slightly twisted. “Shredded Wheat with cut-up banana and almond milk. Is that a rich person’s breakfast?” I sit up, doing a bit of my own stretching, loving the way her gaze roams along my bare chest, her lips parting ever so slightly. “No. I think that’s a solid middle-class breakfast.” “Middle. That’s average. Average is good, right?” “There’s nothing average about you, Henna.” I stand, following her into the bedroom. “I’m going to shower quickly, and by quickly I mean I need an hour. Do you have an hour?” “To shower with you?” I try to play it cool, like I’m serious. I’m a little serious. The color leaves her face. “Oh, um …” She twists her fingers together, drawing her shoulders inward. “I’m kidding.” A little kidding. Henna’s posture relaxes as her cheeks pink up again. “We could.” Her gaze darts around the room before landing on mine for two seconds only to wander around the room again. “My clothes are at my hotel. I’ll shower there. I need to get going.” A slow sigh deflates her chest as she tries on a smile that misses the confident mark by a few centimeters. “Okay.” “But thanks for the offer.” I wink. More color paints her cheeks, and it looks stunning on her. “I kinda sorta thought we’d have sex last night, but we didn’t, and that’s fine, but now I don’t know what comes next.” Does that make me the world’s biggest idiot for not taking what she was planning on offering? Or does that make me a gentleman? I’ve already fucked her a hundred different ways in my head, so I’m going to shy away from the gentleman label. “How about you put my number in your phone and I’ll call you later today? That feels like a good next, don’t you think?” Henna nods and turns, walking toward the bedroom door. Digging through her purse, she retrieves her phone. When she pulls it out, a string of three condoms comes out with it. “Oh jeez.” Quickly snatching them off the floor, she shoves them back into her purse. I don’t respond because I’m not sure what the correct response should be. “I was conceived at Coachella.” She hands me her phone with the contact screen open, ready for my information. Taking her phone, I give her an expectant look, but she withholds all elaboration. “And by conceived, you mean physical conception, not merely an idea kind of conception?” I hand her phone back and give her mine. “In the shadows behind a stage. I know more details than most people should actually know about the moment they were conceived.” She lifts a shoulder in a small shrug. “But Juni is my best friend. She’s the absolute coolest mom ever, and the story of how she met my dad is my favorite story ever.” I nod as she keeps her chin tipped toward the screen to my phone. “Why is that?” I take my phone back when she holds it out to me. “Yin Yang. Opposites. Laws of the universe.” She wears a satisfied smile. “My parents were temporary. I was permanent.” Holding out her arms, she inspects her henna tattoos as if seeing them for the first time. “My mom had henna tattoos on her body when she met my dad. Henna grows in intensity over a few days before fading to nothing. It’s magical and beautiful and then it’s gone. My parents say that about their love for each other. It grew quickly into something deep and intense, but over time it faded. Their love—like most everything in life—was temporary.” “We’re temporary.” Her empty stare shifts to meet my gaze and she nods. “Don’t sweat it. Everything is temporary. But today…” she walks into my chest, and my arms wrap around her as she looks up at me “…we should be at our brightest, our most intense.”

This was a pretty good book. This is Bodhi and Henna's book. As always with this author, there are some major twists so I don't want to spoil anything plotwise. I will say, it has a lot going on and is a bit schizophrenic. This book is part insta-connection/near insta-love, part high school student and guidance counselor romance, and part illness/impending death of a parent book.

I liked Bodhi and Henna. When they meet, Henna is 19 and, due to a health issue delaying her schooling, is about to enter her senior year of high school. Bodhi is 26, a high school guidance counselor (although Henna doesn't know that until later) and is running himself ragged running his family farm and taking care of his ailing father. I liked them both, although Henna has a few moments throughout the book of immaturity and naivety. The two have a tumultuous romance spanning years with leaving, separations, pushing away, hurting each other, and coming back together. They go through a lot together and on their own. It was a little bit much for me and a little too much drama. I liked both characters so much and I really felt like they had a soulmate connection. They were definitely meant to be together and were sweet and sexy. I felt bad for them to have to go through so much and wanted them to have a simpler romance.

Still, I enjoyed the book and the story in general. I was entertained and it kept my attention. The writing was good. So, while this book was not my favorite by this author, it was still a pretty good read. I still enjoy Ms. Ann's books and look forward to what she comes up with in the future.

This was a good book! I am so sad it's the last book of the series. This is Georg and Alice's book. Georg is a bruin shifter and a former king that we met in previous books in the series. He escaped death, is a little bitter over what happened to him and feeling at loose ends. When he least expects it, he meets Alice. She has been kidnapped and kept captive in a crumbling castle in the woods since she was a child. The two feel an immediate connection and Alice decides to escape her captivity for good by asking for Georg's help. Meanwhile, the bruin king is dying and Georg has been summoned as a candidate to be the next king. I don't want to share too much so I don't spoil anything, but the two face some challenges in life and love but come through it all happy together.

I loved Alice and Georg together. I was happy to see Georg find his soulmate after everything he had gone through in previous books in the series. Alice was sweet and innocent, but also strong when it counted. Georg was protective and adored Alice so much. They were a great match and an awesome couple. I loved the story in the book. I enjoyed the elements of Alice in Wonderland added in, but also that it was not a direct retelling and fit into the series culture and worldbuilding. This book was just such a fun, romantic, sweet and mysterious book.

Overall, this was such a great read! The Toil and Trouble series has been one of my favorite paranormal series ever. I have loved the fairytale characters, worldbuilding, and the romance. I am so sad to see it end. I will continue to recommend this series to everyone and I can't wait to see what Ms. Blair comes up with next!

The Bastard is book one in the Filthy duet. In this book, we get

Eric (from the Dirty Rich series) and Harper's story. Eric is a

billionaire and right hand man to Grayson Bennett. He is the

ill-treated, bastard son to a rich jerk who managed to get away

from his family and become his own man. Harper is his

stepsister, whose mother married his father after they were

both grown. When they first met as adults, Harper and Eric

had an instant connection and spent a very hot night together.

But Harper was working for Eric's dad as his protege to run his

car manufacturing company and Eric wanted nothing to do

with his father or family. So their paths diverged and they

hadn't spoken for six years. Now, Harper is still working for her

stepfather's company and she knows something is not right.

She thinks her stepfather or stepbrother, Isaac, are covering

up something terrible in the company that is causing cars to be

recalled and consumer deaths. Harper goes to Eric for help.

He is reluctant at first and doesn't know whether he can trust

her, but the connection between the two of them is too strong

for him to deny. The two begin to try to solve the mystery

within the company.

I liked this book in general, but I felt like it would have been

better off as one book instead of a duet. I did not see the need

to have it split. I liked Harper and Eric, but they didn't trust

each other throughout the entire book. It felt like their

relationship went nowhere. The book took too long to get

moving and not very much happened until the end, where

there was a big reveal and a cliffhanger. I am a fan of Ms. Jones

and I know her writing style. I have faith she will pull it all

together in book two. It just didn't read like this was a story

that needed to be split into a duet. If I had not read this

author's books before and trusted her, I'm not sure this book

would be enough to keep a reader's attention and make them

want to read book two. But, personally, I did feel invested

enough to continue. I just wish the two books were released

closer together. Still, I did like the story so far and I look

forward to the conclusion of Eric and Harper's story. I do think

they will be a good couple once they get their act together. I

did enjoy this book, even if I wanted it to move quicker. I like

Ms. Jones writing style. It is romantic, sexy, suspenseful and

deliciously soapy. I trust her to pull this story all together. I am

looking forward to the mystery being solved and their

relationship coming together in book two, The Princess.

ETA: I just read this duet is being turned into a trilogy. That

makes me less excited to finish the series because the story is

just going to be drawn out more, frustrating me further. Still, I

will read them both because I am hooked on this story enough

to see it through to the end.

This was a good book. Evidence of Desire is David and Isla's story. We met David in the first book in the series, Order of Protection. He is a criminal lawyer in Henry's firm. He is a former NFL player as well, which makes him extra qualified for the new case he is hired for. Another former NFL player, Trey Adams, who has CTE from too many concussions, is accused of murdering his wife, Portia. Isla is the Adams' family lawyer. She works closely with the family and helps the with their wills and trusts, etc. She is like a member of the family and she is the one who hires David to represent Trey. When they two meet, they have an immediate connection that only grows over the course of the case, which they work together to solve, and they fall in love.

The story was really good and interesting. I really liked David and Isla a lot. She was sweet and caring. David was too, as well as strong and layered. They both felt very real with understandable insecurities and fears. Both knew pretty quickly that each other was "the one"; they just had to be brave enough to go for it. I definitely felt their love and connection. There is a good mystery here and I enjoyed guessing who had killed Portia and why. I did think the book was a little heavy on the suspense and angst, but I still really enjoyed it. The writing was excellent and the characters had great depth.

Overall, I really enjoyed Isla and David's relationship development and seeing them fall in love. I look forward to more from this fun series and Ms. Blake!

This was a good book! This is Tori and Adrien's story. Tori is Princess Victoria and is coming of age to take her role as Queen of her small country. She breaks up with her fellow royal fiance, feeling like they are more friends and not in love. But, afterwards, she finds out that she must be married to a person of royal blood in order to keep her throne. She decides to have a fling before she begins a search for a new royal groom, and she meets Adrien on a layover at the airport. They have an instant connection and spend a sweet and sexy night together. However, neither tell each other who they are. When Tori begins interviewing for a husband, she finds out that Adrien is actually her Prince charming.

Overall, this book was such a fun, easy read. Washed Up Royal was low angst, with no OW/OM drama or manwhore, or pushing away. Tori and Adrien's story was a sweet and sexy fairytale. They were a perfect match for each other. This was also a nice break from other, more angsty books by Ms. Karr. I am excited to continue this series!
