Cover Reveal: Hard Fall by Sara Ney

"Hard Fall"

That's what my mom is always saying: "The bigger you are, the harder you fall." She's talking about love—I've never been in it myself, but that doesn't stop me from secretly matchmaking for my friends. Who would suspect me, a world class athlete, of meddling in other people's love lives? I love Love, especially when it’s not me who’s doing the falling…

"No Thanks."

That's what Hollis Westbrooke said when I asked her on a date. Well, propositioned her, actually—but it was all a big joke; one she doesn't think is funny. My stomach is in knots since I might actually like this girl so the joke is on me. Hollis’s father is my boss—and she doesn't date players.

The bigger they are, the harder they fall—especially when biggest player is me.

Excerpt:

“What took you two so long? Don’t worry, we saved you some cake.” Mr. Hans smiles from his recliner with Hunter on the sofa, her thumbs dancing along her phone screen. Gabe will get along well with her.
“Cake, Morgan?”
My steps falter when I hear Nate’s voice from the kitchen.
Mr. Hans winks at me. “I invited Nate for cake too.”
I nod slowly. “I see. Whose birthday is it?”
“Life is a celebration. Cake needs no excuse.”
So much for having some time to digest what Nate said to me and my flirty reaction to his kiss comment. I put on a neutral face and drag my timid ass into the kitchen.
“Cake, Gracelyn?” Nate glances up from the counter, a knife in one hand and a plate in his other hand.
“Mmm … yes, Gracelyn. You want cake.” Morgan rolls her eyes back in her head as she slowly chews a bite, standing next to Nate.
How am I supposed to look at him when I saw him barely an hour ago and he said he wanted to kiss me, and I returned the desire without the actual kiss? I guess we’re going to be two people who want to kiss but know that it will never happen.
“Thank you.” I take the cake, giving Nate a two-second glance. It’s all I can give him without completely self-combusting into a pile of ashes.
“Mr. Hans … this is so good.” Morgan traipses out of the kitchen.
“It is good. I haven’t had cake in a long time.” I slowly lick the frosting from the fork.
Nate glances at the floor, eyes narrowed, and hunches down. After a few seconds, I move around to his side of the island.
“Did you drop something?”
Hunched like a baseball catcher, gaze still to the floor, he crooks a finger at me.
I set my plate on the counter. “Did you lose a contact lens?” I squat next to him behind the counter.
He lifts his gaze to meet my squinted eyes. The corner of his mouth bends just as his hand slides behind my head and his lips press to mine.
What the hell?
My lungs freeze while my heart pauses and my mind explodes. There’s no tongue to this kiss, just hungry lips. It knocks me off balance, and I fall to my knees, resting my hands on his shoulders.
Nate pulls back half an inch, letting his lips hover next to mine, the warmth of his breath covering my stunned mouth. “I’m not even sorry.” He shrugs.
My mouth opens as if it wants to speak, but I have no idea what to say.
“Dad …”
Nate bolts up, leaving me on my knees. “Yes?”
“Can Hunter use—” Morgan’s eyes narrow at me, my head barely peeking over the counter. “Gracelyn, what are you doing?”
“I’m …” I give her a tight smile.
Nate says, “Picking up a few crumbs.”
At the same time, I say, “Tying your dad’s shoe.”
His explanation is much better.
Morgan laughs. “Um … okay. You’re both acting weird.”
I climb to my feet.
“Can Hunter use what?” Nate asks.
“Your bike so we can go for a bike ride.”
“Are you going to stay around here?”
Morgan nods. “Pinky swear. We won’t go too far.”
“I’ll need to put the seat down for her.”
“Yes! Thanks, Dad. I’ll go tell her.” Morgan runs out of the kitchen.
Nate covers the cake with plastic wrap and nods to my plate with the half-eaten piece of cake. “Are you going to finish that?”
Cake. He wants to talk about the cake?
My head inches side to side.
“Too good to let it go to waste.” He picks up the plate and finishes my cake.
YOU KISSED ME!
“By the way …” His gaze remains on the plate as he scoops up the last bite. “Morgan knows I know how to tie my own shoes.”

3.5-3.75 stars
***

When the Walls Come Down is a collaboration by authors Aly Martinez and M. Mabie. This was a pretty good book. This book is Maggie and Shane's story. Shane is working for his brother-in-law, Casey's family company as the head of marketing. Casey thinks that Shane is wasting his time and talents and should start his own marketing company. So he hires a new head of marketing for the company in order to give Shane the push he needs to go out on his own, only he doesn't let him know. Maggie picks up her entire life and moves across the country to take the job for which Casey hired her. Before her first day, she meets Shane at a bar. They have an instant connection and like each other right away. It seems to be the start of a new, good relationship between them, but that all comes to a screeching halt when, on her first day at work, Shane finds out Maggie is taking over his job. The two have a lot to work through, but they manage to fall in love and come out together stronger on the other side.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but then I saw that it was described as a low angst, workplace rom-com, so I was expecting that. I didn't find it to be particularly funny and I did find it to be pretty angsty and serious at times. Also, it took me until about 30% through to get into the book, because I found it started a bit slow. There is a lot of banter between the couple, but I didn't find it super funny, like I think it was meant to come off as. I didn't feel much chemistry between them for a while. But I did like them as characters and I came to think they were a good match. They both really liked each other and wanted to be together from early on when they met. Maggie has some family issues that make her desperate to be successful and not willing to give up this job opportunity without a fight. Shane also has baggage from his past relationship and is afraid to go out on his own just to fail. The two had a great connection that made it seem like they really should be together, but they were not willing to sacrifice their jobs, so they decided to just be friends. I felt the pain they had from not being able to be together. Neither of them is very confidant or act like they have everything together. They are just normal young adults trying to make the best decisions for their futures. They spent a lot of time denying that they could be together because of their circumstances and had to work hard to figure out a solution to their problem. I liked the book more and more as it went on. The end was really good and there is a cute epilogue. I was very happy that Maggie and Shane could work out their issues so that they could get the happy ending they deserved.

Overall, this is a good read. Shane and Maggie were really sweet together. I enjoyed their story and seeing their relationship develop. Ms. Martinez and Ms. Mabie make a good team. I look forward to more from them both in the future.

New Release: The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis + Review!

The Summer Deal by Jill Shalvis is now available!

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes a friends-to-frenemies-to-sisters story… And then add in a love story (okay, two love stories). Shake. Stir. Read on a lazy summer day at the beach.

Brynn Turner desperately wishes she had it together, but her personal life is like a ping-pong match that’s left her scared and hurt after so many attempts to get it right. In search of a place to lick her wounds and get a fresh start, she heads back home to Wildstone.

And then there’s Kinsey Davis, who after battling serious health issues her entire twenty-nine years of life, is tired of hoping for . . . well, anything. She's fierce, tough, and pretty much the opposite of Brynn except for one thing: they're half-sisters. Kinsey is keeping this bombshell, and a few others as well. Long time frenemies from summer camp, there’s no way she’s going to tell Brynn they’re related.

But then Brynn runs into Kinsey's lifelong best friend, Eli, renewing a childhood crush. He’s still easy-going and funny and sexy as hell. When he gets her to agree to a summer-time deal to trust him to do right by her, no matter what, she never dreams it’ll result in finding a piece of herself she didn’t even know was missing. She could have a sister, love, and a future―if she can only learn to let go of the past.

As the long days of summer wind down, the three of them must discover if forgiveness is enough to grasp the unconditional love that’s right in front of them.

The Summer Deal is a good book. This is mainly Brynn's story. After a disastrous breakup with a con-man ex-boyfriend who stole from her, she has returned to her hometown to start over. As a child, Brynn attended camp for years with Eli and Kinsey. Eli was her first crush and first kiss, while his best friend, Kinsey, bullied her for having lesbian parents. Now, Brynn finds herself with a new job and in desperate need of a place to live, besides with her smothering mothers. After a chance meeting with Eli, she accepts a room for rent in his house with he, his brother, Max, and Kinsey. But there are some big secrets between them all. Kinsey is not just Brynn's childhood frenemy, but is also secretly her half-sister.

This was a good book. I enjoyed the themes of love, friendship and family. Kinsey was a prickly character, but had a good heart. She and Brynn found out how much they had in common and that they were meant to be friends and family. There are two romances going on in the book. Brynn and Eli have an attraction from when they were young that turns into a slow burn relationship as adults. They both must learn to trust each other and let each other in. The two were really sweet together. Kinsey has a life-threatening kidney disease that causes her to not want to get close to most people, including her guy, Deck, who she loves but won't let herself get too attached to. The story was interesting and centers around forgiveness, family drama, humor, healing and love. It shows how this group of friends formed their own family and loved each other through difficulties and despite their flaws. The story ended a bit sooner than I would have liked. There is an epilogue, but I wanted to see firsthand some of the events that were skipped. Still, I enjoyed this book and was happy that everyone got the happy ending they deserved.

Overall, this book was an easy, entertaining read. Perfect for reading by the pool. I have enjoyed the Wildstone series and look forward to more from Ms. Shalvis in the future!

New Release: A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne + Review!

A Dark and Stormy Knight by Kerrigan Byrne is now available!

This Knight of the Crown is driven by a painful past and a patient fury… and his entire life is a lie.

Sir Carlton Morley is famously possessed of extraordinary will, singular focus, and a merciless sense of justice. As a man, he secured his fortune and his preeminence as Scotland Yard's ruthless Chief Inspector. As a decorated soldier, he was legend for his unflinching trigger finger, his precision in battle, and his imperturbable strength. But as a boy, he was someone else. A twin, a thief, and a murderer, until tragedy reshaped him.

Now he stalks the night, in search of redemption and retribution, vowing to never give into temptation, as it's just another form of weakness.

Until temptation lands—quite literally—in his lap, taking the form of Prudence Goode.

Prim and proper Pru is expected to live a life of drudgery, but before she succumbs to her fate, she craves just one night of desire. On the night she searches for it, she stumbles upon a man made of shadows, muscle and wrath… And decides he is the one.

When their firestorm of passion burns out of control, Morley discovers, too late, that he was right. The tempting woman has become his weakness.

A weakness his enemies can use against him.

Review:

4 stars
****

This was a really good book! A Dark and Stormy Knight is the seventh book in the Victorian Rebels series and is Sir Carlton Morley's book. Morley has been a character in the other books in the series and is a chief police inspector who also does vigilante justice in his spare time. He has a tragic past and is a lonely man, but his world changes one night when he meets Prudence Goode. Prudence is engaged to a philandering man and sees an unhappy, loveless marriage in her future. She seeks out one night of passion before she marries and, in an error of communication, spends the night with Carlton. They don't think they will ever meet again, but fate has other plans when Pru's fiance is murdered on her wedding day, with her as the prime suspect. I don't want to give too much of the story away so I can't say much more about the plot.  But Pru and Carlton have quite a bit to work through before they eventually get their HEA.

A Dark and Stormy Knight is a darkish historical romance with some of my favorite tropes- marriage of convenience and surprise pregnancy, with a dash of murder mystery. The story was very good. I liked Prudence and Morley. They were good together. It did take Morley a bit long to open up to Pru, but he did come around. Prudence was very sweet and brave, despite her difficult circumstances. She was just the breath of fresh air Carlton needed in his life. I enjoyed the couple's relationship progression and was happy that they both got the HEA they deserved. There were some really sweet and sexy moments with a dash of suspense too.

Overall, this was an entertaining, very enjoyable book. I am a big fan of this series and can't wait to see what Ms. Byrne comes up with next!
