Synopsis:

Truth: From over a thousand miles away, I watched on the screen of my phone as two men murdered my wife. And I was helpless to save her.

Consumed by hate and rage, I spent four years running from my memories.

Until a shattered woman gave me a reason to stop.

Cora lived in a nightmare, but through sheer force of will, she’d turned it into something beautiful. She had a smile that could pierce the darkest soul. And with one glance, she shredded mine.

Lie: I was only there for a fresh start.

Lie: I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

Lie: There was nothing I could do to save her, either.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

****

This was a good book! The Truth About Lies is book one in the Truth Duet.

This book is really tricky to review without spoilers so I can't say much about the story. This is Cora and Penn’s book. Both Cora and Penn have lived through heartbreak and difficult times. When they meet, they are both at nearly rock bottom. Something about them is drawn to each other and they begin to see hope for a better future, but they have a lot of really scary adversity to overcome, if they even can.

I have to admit this one started off a little bumpy for me. The story started off slow, was very mysterious, and not much was known. It was interesting, but it made it hard to buy into a romance. I wasn't sure what was going on for quite awhile there. But once more parts of the puzzle were revealed, I got sucked into the story and really enjoyed it.

The Truth about Lies is a little dark and gritty. I wasn’t sure about Cora or Penn’s characters at first, but I ended up really liking them both and feeling the love between them. I was really routing for them to get a happy ending. This book ends on a doozie of a cliffhanger. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. I really hope the next book maintains the momentum and excitement at the end of The Truth about Lies.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read!  If you find the beginning a little slow, hang in there as it picks up soon and will keep you guessing till the end! I can’t wait to read The Truth about Us!

Big Giant Puffy Heart Eyes for Shimmy Bang Sparkle! Favorite Book of the Year.

Shimmy Bang Sparkle is NIck and Stella’s story. Nick is a reformed thief. His last jewel heist led to jail time. He is a good guy that got caught up in some bad stuff. Now, he is fresh out and determined to stay on the straight and narrow. But then, light shines down from the heavens and he meets Stella. She is standing in a jewelry store and he sees her through the window from the sidewalk outside. She is beautiful and full of life, and he is drawn to her. He sees her drop her cell phone under a shelf, but not notice she dropped it, so he goes into the store to pick it up for her. They have instant chemistry from the moment they meet, but as they are talking and flirting in the jewelry store, Nick is shocked to to spy Stella steal a diamond ring. You see, Stella is the leader of a notorious girl group of jewel thieves, the Shimmy Shimmy Bangs. Stella and her two best friends are robin-hood-like, in that they steal jewels, fence them, and use the money for good. Nick and Stella are match made in Heaven. They are drawn to each other, quickly begin spending time together and falling for each other. Meanwhile, Stella and her friends are planning one final heist-to-end-all-heists to set themselves up for life. But when an accident lands her friends out of commission, Stella asks Nick to help her finish the job. Can they pull it off and walk off into the sunset together?

Excuse me while I gush. I loved this book. I loved Nick. I loved Stella. I loved the way they loved each other. I loved everything they went through together for each others’ happiness.

I loved the swoony and hunky, tattooed Nick. He was so hot, so take control, but also a genuinely nice guy. He was awed by Stella. It was adorable the way he saw her for the gem she was, right away. He was content to let her lead the show. He was dominant, but sweet. The perfect hero. I also loved his POV. I don’t always love male POV in books, but his was one of the best I’ve ever read. I loved Stella too. She was absolutely adorable. She was sassy, smart, funny, strong, independent and a good person and friend.

These two were simply perfect for each other. No one else would have been able to understand each other they way they were. It was fate that brought them together at just the right time. Nick and Stella were sweet, romantic, funny and sexy together. Swoonworthy chemistry and connection. They were a truly epic couple. Both of them knew soon after they met that they were meant to be together. There was no pushing away or unnecessary angst. All of the drama is centered around the heist.. Even though we know that there is a chance they could get caught stealing the big diamond, it is not harped on or dwelled on. We just get to enjoy their journey. A road trip, a cute dog, and falling in love along the way.

Even though the book has some elements that could have made it feel darker, like Nick’s being recent ex-con, it has a happy, hopeful feeling. It made you root for Nick and Stella to pull off their heist and live happily ever after. I loved the overall atmosphere and feelings the book invoked. I loved the idea of the girl group of jewel thieves. The Shimmy Shimmy Bangs were awesome, smart and kickass. The story was fun, original and interesting. I could see it being a movie one day. But it is really the chemistry and love between the characters that creates magic. The tangible, awesome connection is what makes the book so good.

Everytime I review a NIcola Rendell book I say this. I just love the way she writes. Her characters are awesome, with lots of depth and layers to them. Strong, sometimes sassy, often sweet women. Protective, kind men who adore their women. They are people you want to know and be friends with, in fact they feel like your best friend by the end of the book. Also, the chemistry and connection between her heroes and heroines is so great and very rare to read. You can feel their love so strongly. There is always humor, sexiness, and low relationship angst. I always end one of the her books with a big happy sigh and those warm feelings linger on for days afterwards as I think of the characters. I can’t say enough how much I love her books and I wish she’d write faster.

Shimmy Bang Sparkle is just so everything. So fun, so sexy, so sweet. It was so good I read I have read it twice already because I loved it so much. This book is definitely my favorite this year. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Rendell comes up with next!

EXCERPT

“Niiiiiiick!” came her voice, more of a growl that an actual word. “Get me out of here. My legs are going numb!” To the bathroom I went, where I was met not only with Stella’s pinch-worthy ass in the window, but also an explosion of towels and makeup, shampoos and lotions, on every flat surface, and all over the floor. Dozens of makeup brushes poked out of an old coffee can by the sink, which was encrusted with jewels like Stella’s phone. Stella had managed to tangle her legs up with toilet paper like the back end of a sloppily wrapped mummy, so I pulled that off her first. She’d also gotten her belt loop hooked over the lock on the window, so I unhooked that too. But I didn’t pull her out quite yet, because her ass was just too hot to ignore. She was still in the same jeans she’d been wearing last night, and I took the chance to run my hand up the back of one thigh. I leaned down, and gave her a kiss on the small of her back. Her body went limp in the window, and she let out a moan. Once I’d had my fix, I hooked my arm underneath her hips and gave her a tug. I absolutely loved the way her skin felt next to mine, especially like this, when she was way too out of her element to feel self-conscious. The muscles of her stomach weren’t flexed, and I felt the soft curves and lines like she hadn’t let me feel them before. The narrow strip of skin where her T-shirt had ridden up made all those cliché terms make sense.

Soft as silk. Sweet as cream. Fucking heaven.

This was a cute, fun, easy read! It’s Vegas Baby is the start of a new, fun series by writing duo Fiona Davenport. This is Andrew and Autumn’s book. Andrew owns a big hotel and casino in Vegas. He sees Autumn on his security camera checking into the hotel and it is love at first sight for him. Autumn is in town for a conference before leaving the country for Africa to work with Doctors Without Borders. She and Drew have a sexy and emotional weekend, both falling for each other. They are determined to make it work between them no matter the time or distance.

This book was exactly what I’ve come to like an expect from Fiona Davenport. A quick, sexy, fun, insta-love read. There is no misunderstandings, pushing away or angst. This book did feel especially short, but I still enjoyed it.

Overall, this was an entertaining read! I look forward to more from this series and Fiona Davenport in the future!

This was a really good book! I have read and enjoyed all of Setta Jay's paranormal romance books so I was eager to see how that translated into contemporary romance. It worked out great!

Mercenary Princess is the start of a new contemporary romance series with some romantic suspense elements. This is Sophia and Viktor's story. Sophia is a crown princess and the younger sister of the King of a small country named Porenza. Her family is very strict and controls her every move. She also has a secret, dangerous double life as a vigilante, together with her best friends running a secret mercenary organization. Viktor is the older brother of one of Sophia's classmates from years ago and is the mysterious, billionaire son of a Russian mafia don.. She has had a crush on Viktor from afar for years, as they both run in the same society circles, but nothing has ever happened between them. When he happens to catch Sophia in the act of scaling down the side of a hotel to escape her guards, he is intrigued and wants to find out her secrets. When he confronts her, the two of them are drawn together like magnets. Neither are sure whether they can trust each other, but they can't stay away and soon begin a sexy, secret relationship. I won't go much further into the plot so as not to spoil anything, but I will say this book stands alone, has an HEA and the next book in the series will feature a different couple.

I really loved the atmosphere and feeling of this book. The story was so original and fresh. It was super sexy, mysterious, suspenseful and intriguing. I loved the relationship between the vigilante princess and the hot, Russian ex-mafia guy. Sophia and Viktor were great together. He was mysterious, protective and adored Sophia. She was strong, wanted to fight for justice, but also kind and down to earth, despite being a princess. They were both sizzling and sweet together. Sophia's family was awful and she did not lead the spoiled, pampered life you would expect of a princess. I was so happy that she got to become independent and come into her own. I also loved her friends and can't wait to see them get their own stories too.

Overall, this was just a good book! I can't wait for more from this series and from Ms. Jay in the future!

Excerpt:

With all attention currently off her, she raised her glass again and allowed her gaze to drift in Viktor’s direction. She held the glass suspended at her lips as their eyes connected. Even with the distance and his dimly lit seating area partially obscuring her view, she felt a shot of electricity slide over her skin, sending tingles of awareness coursing through her body. How was that kind of chemical attraction even possible? She’d lusted after him for years, but to be on the receiving end of his bold appraisal was something very different and far too enticing. It made her crave something she couldn’t have.Viktor was seductive in a way no man should be. He lounged in a chair, his long legs stretched before him, and all she could think about was climbing over those strong thighs and straddling him before ripping his shirt open and using his body. It didn’t matter that he was surrounded by men and women, to whom he paid no attention, or that armed, tattooed guards stood at the private stairs going to his section and beside his leather seat. She groaned mentally. Having him in her sphere was rapidly becoming a harsh lesson in frustration. The space between their VIP alcoves could have spanned an ocean, and they’d have been more likely to interact. There was enough firepower between his guards and her own to ensure their worlds could never collide. A “prim” princess of a small country and a ruthless Russian billionaire with a dark history—it was definitely not a match for the storybooks.

“This place is beautiful,” he said when she hesitated. She nodded but didn’t move from her seat. “I love it here. I went to college in Denver, but I always missed this place. When I was younger, my dad had a house in Creede. He started the business there, but when he could, he moved us out of town. My dad was a loner, I suppose. Creede has a population of four hundred and Dad thought that was way too many people.” “I know the feeling. I lived in London for a while. That was definitely too many people.” He kept his tone even. It was odd. Now that he was here, that hunger he always felt was tempered by her fear. He’d thought he would take anything offered to him, but he couldn’t having met her. If the blonde had offered herself up, he would have turned her down. Over the two hours they’d sat in the booth, eating fried food and drinking beer, he’d figured something out. Some people were more special than others. River was special. He should be more cynical. He could hear Damon Knight telling him to be cautious, but he couldn’t make himself do it. Perhaps it was the fact that he didn’t have a long well of history to draw from and to teach him that this was likely a mistake. It didn’t feel like a mistake. “Wow. I’ve never been farther than Kansas City.” She still wasn’t moving and her voice had taken on a tremulous tone. His heart constricted, and it was surprisingly easy to not listen to his dick. His dick was pleading with him to get aggressive. His dick was trying to convince him that if he could get inside her, she would accept him. Yeah, he wasn’t going to listen to his dick. “If you’ve changed your mind, I can call my brother to pick me up. I have a phone and so does he. His number is programmed in. I don’t want to scare you. I had a good time talking to you tonight. It was one of the nicest nights I’ve had in a long time.” Ever. It was the best night ever. It was the first night he felt normal, though he wasn’t exactly sure what that word meant. Comfortable was a better one. That tight feeling in his chest had eased as he’d sat in the booth with River and Tucker and Heather. Although he’d hated lying to her. She finally turned, looking at him. Her eyes shone in the moonlight. “You mean that, don’t you?” He wanted to touch her. He’d had to force his hands not to move toward her all night long. The most he’d allowed himself was to have their hips and shoulders touch as they’d sat next to each other. He’d decided it had been a good thing he’d sat next to her because he was fairly certain he had a case of Big Tag’s crazy eyes, and she would have seen them had he sat across from her. “I do mean it. Please don’t get me wrong. I want you. I would like nothing more in the world than to take you into that cabin, lay you out, and make a feast of you. I want to kiss you and when I say that I don’t merely mean your lips. I want to put my mouth all over your body. But more than I want that, I want you to like me.” It was important somehow. He wouldn’t see her after tonight, but he couldn’t stand the idea that she was afraid of him. Everyone was afraid of him. Everyone he knew was waiting for his powder keg to blow, but he’d sworn to himself earlier in the evening that it wouldn’t blow around her. He would protect her even if it was only for one night.

For years, he was a part of my life. I watched him rush to the hospital countless times, his beautiful surgeon hands racing to save lives.

After all this time, I can’t escape the truth.

I want Dr. Lowe.

Lust chokes each moment we’re together. He promises to fulfill my fantasies—every dirty, naughty desire we can dream up.

Only, I can’t have him.

He’s confident. Experienced. Seductive.

And he’s my ex-boyfriend’s father.

EXCERPT:

It was a nicer waiting room than where I’d just been, but much smaller. Only enough room for six people or so. This had to be the place where doctors delivered their post-op summary to families. I turned to face him, and all the air whooshed from my lungs. Greg was essentially wearing a suit. He wore black dress pants, a white collared shirt and a cobalt-colored tie. His suitcoat was fitted and white, and he completed the look with a turquoise stethoscope slung around his neck. My gaze traced the blue lettering over his right breast. Gregory Lowe, MD Trauma Surgery It didn’t matter that he had faint lines around his eyes hinting at his fatigue, or that his normally perfect hair looked disheveled, as if he’d run a hand through it one too many times. It didn’t matter because he looked fucking perfect. My dirty doctor fantasy come to life. And he gazed back at me like he wanted to eat me whole, which was more than fine with me. He sauntered over, and his confidence seemed to build with each step, widening his wicked smile. His voice was deep and sinful. “What seems to be the problem?” “Problem?” I whispered. “You’re flushed. Breathing hard.” He seized my wrist, pressed his index finger to my pulse point, and peered down at his watch, counting the seconds. “Your pulse is elevated.” I had no idea my wrist was an erogenous zone, but in Greg’s hands, every inch of my skin felt that way. I swallowed a breath. “I’m having a reaction to something.” God, his expression was corrupt and victorious as he walked me backward toward a wall. He feigned concern. “Any idea what’s causing it?” He wasn’t playing fair, but I liked it. “No . . . Doctor.” The second the words left my mouth, we burst into flames. His lips slammed against mine at the same instant my back hit the wall. His hands were on my waist, then under my shirt, sliding over my belly and skimming upward. I clenched the lapels of his coat as our tongues tangled with each other, battling for control. He won, of course. It made sense that our kiss was electric because I was a live wire tonight. His broad chest flattened against me, his hands molding to my bra-covered breasts while he pushed me against the wall. I tore my mouth from his and turned my head to the side so I could drag air into my lungs, and his hot, wet mouth latched onto the sensitive spot below my ear, biting and sucking until I let out a moan. It was wild what we were doing, and how fast we attacked each other, but the where we were doing this was craziest part of it. He didn’t seem to have any concerns though. “Undo your pants,” he rasped into my ear. “I want to check and see how severe this reaction is.” “Oh my God,” I gasped. Without thinking, my hands moved to follow his command. He pulled his lower body away from mine, just enough to allow me to do it. The snap of my jeans popped open, and I couldn’t get my zipper down fast enough. Should I be worried about someone catching us? I wasn’t. I trusted him. Greg wouldn’t put either of us in a position for that to happen, and his calm, focused expression reinforced it. He looked absolutely in control, both of me and the situation. His dark eyes sharpened on mine, studying my response while he slid his hand down the front of my panties. My lips parted as his fingers found me hot and wet for him. What did I look like, clutching his arms right above his elbows as his fingers twitched on my swollen clit? I shuddered with pleasure. Had my pupils dilated? Could he tell my heart rate was racing through the roof? His lips peeled back in a smug smile. “That is quite the reaction.” Those skilled fingers stirred me further, and I tightened my grip on his arms, biting off a louder moan. Shit, his touch was magic. It lit me up. He could tell too, because his eyes burned with enjoyment. “And you’re still not sure what’s causing it?” He liked this scene as much as I did. Maybe more.

Nikki Sloane landed in graphic design after her careers as a waitress, a screenwriter, and a ballroom dance instructor fell through. For eight years she worked for a design firm in that extremely tall, black, and tiered building in Chicago that went through an unfortunate name change during her time there. Now she lives in Kentucky and manages a team of graphic artists. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America, is married with two sons, writes dirty books, and couldn’t be any happier.
