Blog Tour: Fall by Kristen Callihan + Review and Excerpt!

The first time I met Jax Blackwood things went a little sideways. In my defense, I didn’t know he was Jax Blackwood—who expects a legendary rock star to be shopping for groceries? More importantly, a blizzard was coming and he was about to grab the last carton of mint-chocolate chip. Still, I might have walked away, but then he smugly dared me to try and take the coveted ice cream. So I kissed him. And distracted that mint-chip right out of his hands. Okay, it was a dirty move, but desperate times and all that. Besides, I never expected he’d be my new neighbor. An annoying neighbor who takes great pleasure in reminding me that I owe him ice cream but would happily accept more kisses as payment. An irresistible neighbor who keeps me up while playing guitar naked–spectacularly naked–in his living room. Clearly, avoidance is key. Except nothing about Jax is easy to ignore—not the way he makes me laugh, or that his particular brand of darkness matches mine, or how one look from him melts me faster than butter under a hot sun. Neither of us believes in love or forever. Yet we’re quickly becoming each other’s addiction. But we could be more. We could be everything. All we have to do is trust enough to fall.

EXCERPT:

The air between us shifts. I’m filled with a strange giddiness, wanting to laugh for the fun of it, but I’m also too warm, my limbs oddly heavy as if simple movements might be too much for me.

His tone turns soft and cajoling, teasing the truth out of me. “Are you going to tell me what you do?” When I say nothing, the corners of his eyes crinkle. “I see. You’re going to torture me a bit.”
The warm, fuzzy feeling grows as I shrug. “Torture feels apropos in this scenario.”
He hums again, taking another step toward me. “What makes you think I won’t like being tortured by you?”
The heat of his body and the scent of his skin makes my head light and my pulse pound. How did it get to this point where the highlight of my day is flirting with Jax Blackwood? Despite the thrill, I know I’m in over my head. I haven’t gone out on a date in months because I form attachments, I get emotional, and then I hurt when they inevitably leave. And this man will leave. He is as bright and fleeting as a camera flash. I’ll be left with the image of him seared into my memory and nothing more.
I tell myself all of this, the voice in my head as stern as possible. But it doesn’t make me back away. It doesn’t stop my body from somehow straining toward his without even moving. Because it might be stupid of me, but I want to feel something that isn’t planned. Something, for however briefly, that’s real.
He’s too attuned to me not to notice. John’s lids lower as his attention slides down my body before
easing back up to my face. Slowly, he rests his forearm on the wall beside my head. “Tell me, Stella,” he murmurs.
“No,” I whisper back, flirting, even though I shouldn’t.
His biceps bunch as he leans in, a smile dancing on his lips. “Tell.”
My breasts graze his chest, and I feel it in my toes.
“You’re crowding me.” I hate how breathy I sound.
“Can’t help it.” His voice is a rumble, the heat of his breath playing over my skin. He ducks his head, drawing close until our lips nearly brush, and when he speaks again, his tone is almost conversational, except for the husky quality that touches deep within my core. “You smell like strawberries. Fucking delicious.”
My lids flutter, and I swallow hard. “Ordinarily, I’d call you out on that cliché but since I’ve been eating strawberries, you aren’t exactly wrong.”
His chuckle is slow and easy, as he eases back and his gaze slowly travels over my face. “Were they sweet, Stella Button?”
He’s looking at my mouth like he might try to find out. My lips tremble in response, and John tracks the movement, his breathing getting deeper, faster. “You have two freckles on your lips. One on the top lip and one on the bottom corner.”
Those damn freckles. They were the bane of my adolescence. I hid them with lipstick and silently cursed whenever someone mentioned them.
Freckles don’t have any feelings, but I swear it’s as if he’s touching them.
“You’re just noticing this?” I try to make it sound like a joke, but it comes out weak and thready.
His own lips quirk. “Oh, I noticed. It’s distracting as hell. They’re like two little dots of butter toffee. Makes me want to lick them, get a taste.”
Oh, God. Lick them, please. I can almost feel it. I want to feel it.
No. Bad Stella. Behave.
John’s lips part a fraction like he just might take that taste.
“Back off,” I whisper. And yet somehow my traitorous hands find their way to his sides, running
over the waistband of his jeans, holding him there.
John makes a sound deep in his throat and tilts his hips, pressing them against mine. A distinctly thick bulge nudges my belly. Both of us lose a breath, and then he’s closer, his cheek touching my temple. “You’ll have to let me go first.”
My thumbs slide under the edge of his shirt and find smooth, taut skin. A tremor goes through his body. I try to think, search for what the hell we’ve been talking about.
His lips brush the crest of my cheek as he murmurs against my skin. “Tell me what you do, Stella. You know you want to.”
My smile feels illicit. Somehow the action is directly tied to all my happy parts, making them draw hot and tight. “I don’t think I do.”
Another hum. “Liar. You’re dying to.”

This was a very good book! Fall is book three in the VIP series and is Stella and Jax/John's book. Jax is his rockstar persona, but in his everyday life, he is John. He is in the band Kill John and, as we saw in previous books, has a problem with depression and he attempted suicide. He is still recovering from that time in his life and living in New York, while the band is on hiatus off doing their own things. He meets Stella at the grocery store, when they fight over the last ice cream in the store in the middle of a blizzard and end up kissing. Later, Stella is hired to pet sit for Killian, whose apartment is next to John's, and they meet again. The two have crazy chemistry and become friends, which leads to a relationship. They have a lot to deal with emotionally, but it all works out in the end.

Fall made me feel so many emotions! I loved Stella and Jax. They are both a little lost and lonely. I hurt for both characters at different times throughout the book, but I really loved and identified with Stella and her loneliness and bravery. I cried for her several times. Stella and Jax were just what each other needed. They were sexy, romantic, sweet and had such great chemistry. There is a bit of a slow burn, but I didn't care one bit. You could feel the love between them. They both had an innocence on relationships and there was an awe at the newness of love between them. I loved their journey to falling in love. Stella and Jax were great together- loving, fun, and sexy, but emotional and understanding of each others' faults.

This is not a super light, fluffy book. There are some heavy subjects tackled. Jax has attempted suicide in the past and deals with depression. He also has an issue with an STD to deal with and the press. Stella has a few problems of her own too and is a bit lost. This book is emotional, but there are some moments of lightness, happiness and swooniness in between the deep stuff. Stella and Jax are both unique characters and are funny together. It was not a doom and gloom book. Both Stella and Jax are trying to be better and overcome their pasts. There is a feeling of hopefulness for the future.

I did feel like the conflict was resolved at the very end, which I don't love. I needed a bit more resolution and to see some happier times afterwards. Still, despite that issue, this book was very good. There is a good epilogue that made me feel better about their future and Stella's trust of Jax.

I was a little worried that Fall would not live up to Managed, which was one of my favorite books last year. But I was worried for nothing as it definitely did. Kristen Callihan is so talented and her writing has such depth. She writes very real feeling, identifiable, complicated characters with so many layers. I have really enjoyed this series. Fall was everything I hoped it would be. Emotional, sexy, sweet, funny and swoony. I can't wait for more from this series and Ms. Callihan!

New Release: So Wild by Eve Dangerfield + Review!

SO WILD
by Eve Dangerfield

As a teenager, Samantha DaSilva had two interests: running wild and messing with her posh neighbour. The neighbour moved away—the coward—but the wild kept right on going. At least it did until her hippie father vanished, leaving her in charge of the family tattoo studio. As Sam struggles to keep the business afloat her childhood nemesis returns, taller, blonder and more offensively gorgeous than ever.

As a teenager, the wildest thing Scott Sanderson did was get a crush on Sam DaSilva. When that blew up in his face he moved to London to pursue realistic goals and girls who didn't set fire to his underwear. After unexpected circumstances pull Scott back into Sam's orbit, he's shocked to discover he's still in love with a woman who doesn't own a phone. And who hasn't forgiven a thing.

As Sam and Scott struggle to make sense of their mutual attraction, they confront some of life's biggest questions—can you ever really get over the past? Is it better to be safe or sorry? Is a spanking adequate punishment for putting someone's virginity on eBay?

REVIEW:

4.25-4.5 stars

Loved! This book was so good! Definitely one of my favorites for the year! This is Samantha and Scott's story. They met as children living next door to each other and grew to having a pranking and antagonistic relationship with each other. They did secretly like each other, but their pranking escalates until something terrible happens to cause Scott to leave the country directly after high school. Now, it is years later and Scott has returned home. Samantha is working in father's tattoo studio trying to keep it from going out of business. When they meet again, all of their antagonistic feelings are gone and they have matured in a way that allows them to become friends and more. They soon can see that what happened in the past was not what they thought and that they really have had strong feelings for each other for years. They must allow themselves to get over their history, open up and take a chance on love together.

So Wild was such a great, unique story. I loved both Samantha and Scott. Especially Sam. She was strong woman and while she could have come off as hard or bitchy, but she never did. They are both good, kind people despite they childhood feud. Also, they were very real, easy to identify with characters with understandable insecurities. They had very much an opposites attract vibe going on too. Sam is a tattoo artist covered with ink who has a close family relationship with her father and two sisters. Scott is more straight laced, working in finance, and has a crazy father who he is not close to and causes some problems. Their relationship begins as a slow burn and is maybe a little less kinky than some of Ms. Dangerfield's other books, but I did not mind at all. They're still sexy together and also sweet. Once they got together, there was not too much pushing away, either. I just loved Sam and Scott together. I loved their sense of history and how well they knew and appreciated each other. It was obvious they were meant to be together. I loved the nickname of Galahad for Scott by Sam too. It was sweet and swoony.

Besides Sam and Scott, there was so much other goodness going on in this book. I very much loved the dynamic Sam had with her sisters and the feeling of family. I really enjoyed all of the characters and I hope that Sam's sisters get their own books too. I also loved the atmosphere of the struggling tattoo studio that Sam was trying to save and her job as a tattoo artist.

Overall, So Wild is such a good read. I can really see the growth in Ms. Dangerfield's writing here. This is my favorite book of her's so far. It is so well rounded and well written, as well as nice and long and juicy. I loved the depth, the realness and complicated characters. This book is definitely going on my favorites shelf. I very much hope she turns this into a series. I look forward to more from Eve in the future!

EXCERPT:

I clear my throat. “While I was eating my ice cream—” He snorts, but remains tense. “I thought about how you looked familiar to me.” “It was the guilt haunting you.” “Or … And I’m just throwing this out there. You’re Jax Blackwood.” He actually flinches. “Fuck. You recognized me.” “It was bound to happen. John? Really?” His chin tips in a pugnacious angle. “It’s my name. John is … me. Jax is who I am onstage.” I picture him performing, all electric energy and raw passion and sheer talent. It’s a sight to behold. Hell, a couple of really hot fantasies have been induced by that sight. While I’m lost in a teen fantasy, his eyes dart around like he’s expecting someone to pop out from behind a snow mound and take his picture. Then his gaze snags on me. My expression must be slightly punch drunk, because his entire body leans away from mine. Not exactly flattering to realize he’s afraid I’ll try to lick his face or something. I snap my gaping mouth closed. “Oh, calm down. It’s not like I’m going to start squealing and try to grab your junk.” His expression lightens a little. “I think if you grabbed my junk, I’d be the one squealing.” “True. I have surprisingly strong hands.” When he stares at me in horror, I hold them up and wiggle my fingers. “Yoga. It’s highly effective.” “My balls just flinched in terror.” “Consider yourself warned.” He snorts but then glances at our building. “You really live here?” “Do you really think I hunted you down?” John—because I can’t seem to think of him as Jax—runs his hand through his damp hair, which makes his biceps bunch and twitch. “Yeah … that does sound crazy.” Crazy. This whole situation is. One day, I’m offered a four-month home in a dream condo, the next I’m standing on my stoop talking to a rock star. The biggest legend of my generation. I honestly don’t know how I’m not stammering right now. “I can’t believe we’re neighbors,” I say without thinking. His green eyes glint in the afternoon light, but he pauses and looks at me more closely. “You know, not to sound conceited here, but you’re kind of leering at me right now.” My chin snaps up like I’ve been hit, even as my body flushes with embarrassment. Shit. I totally had been leering. No, not leering. But I had been staring at him in awe. Ugh. “Well, you do sound conceited. I was simply making polite eye contact.” Liar McLiar-Face.

New Release: Temptation by Micalea Smeltzer + Excerpt!

TEMPTATION
by Micalea Smeltzer

  Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance

  Release Date: October 19, 2018

  Blurb:

temp·ta·tion a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise. After the death of my boyfriend, my whole world is tossed upside down. I lose not only him but my home and, suddenly, nothing is the same. Then I meet him. Siva. My savior. He’s dark and brooding, the complete opposite of everything I’ve ever known. Somehow, though, I’m able to see the light in him that no one else can. He tempts me ever closer, my heart reaching out to him, even while my mind shouts out me to stay away. That it’s too soon. That it’s wrong. But when temptation becomes too strong, who
am I too resist?

  Excerpt:

 PROLOGUE

I always knew death would touch my life at some point. It’s inevitable, really. We all die after all. I guess I never expected it to be the man I loved—or if it was, I expected us to be old and gray in our beds. But life had other plans, and now Devak is gone, and I’m … I’m numb. I wiggle around on the hard pew, trying to get more comfortable. It doesn’t work. The man at the podium drones on and on. About nothing. About everything. About life. About death. Devak wouldn’t have liked this. He was a simple man. He wouldn’t appreciate so much fussing over him, and he definitely wouldn’t appreciate his step-mother blubbering her eyes out in the front pew. His father, Rajas, pats his wife’s back in comfort. It takes all my energy not to roll my eyes. Although, I guess I’m bitter since they stuck me in the back like I’m unimportant. Since Devak and I weren’t married, Rajas and his wife, Lila, consider me null and void now. They never liked me. They thought me to only be a thieving American, after his money and name. They couldn’t be more wrong. I truly love Devak. Loved. I loved him. Past tense. I nearly choked. It didn’t seem right to be thinking of him in the past tense. The man speaking finishes and everyone stands. Everyone except me, that is. My legs feel like they weigh five-hundred pounds. Probably five-hundred pounds of tears. I haven’t cried, not once, since I got the news Devak was killed in the car accident. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. I will the tears to come now, as Lila and Rajas take one last look at Devak, but nothing happens. All that exists is the numbness. Rajas looks sadly at his youngest and favorite son, gone from this world too soon. Dev has—had—an older brother, but I’ve never met him. I’ve never even seen a photo of him. He’s something of a pariah. Although, if Rajas were my father maybe I’d be the same way. The man takes the word overbearing to another level. Though, I never really understood why Dev didn’t talk about his brother. He didn’t talk about his mother much either except to say she left shortly after his brother stopped coming around. I look around the people still gathered in the church, and no one looks like they could be his mother or brother. They probably don’t even know Dev’s gone, and it makes me sad. They deserve to know, though I’m sure Rajas would disagree. Several people eye me, and I see Rajas say something to one of them. I’m sure it isn’t anything nice. If he’d ever actually bothered to get to know me he would’ve seen how much I loved his son. They could think what they wanted, though, since I knew my love for him was true. I wasn’t in the habit of caring what people thought of me. I learned a long time ago the opinion of others was useless. The church emptied, and I was left alone with a somber Rajas and Lila, both of them looking at me like I was a speck of dirt they wanted to wipe off their designer shoes. Rajas is tall and handsome like Devak. He’s full Indian with dark caramel skin and inky black hair. His eyes are as dark as his hair, and his mouth is almost always set in a frown. He has a regal air about him, like royalty, though he’s not. Lila has pale skin, light blond hair, and lifeless blue eyes. She’s the complete opposite of his first wife, Isla. I’d only ever seen a picture of the woman, but she was beautiful, with black hair, olive skin, and violet colored eyes. “Sloane,” Rajas says sternly. “Sir,” I address him. I’m not allowed to call him Rajas, or even Mr. Kapur. “What are you doing?” he asks, his eyes raking over me where I sit, picking apart my black dress and shoes I’m sure. “Sitting,” I say sarcastically, since it’s pretty obvious what I’m doing. I’m not normally so short with him, since I usually want to impress him, but with Devak gone I can’t bring myself to care. What’s the point anymore? He starts to smile but it quickly disappears when he catches himself. He clears his throat. “Aren’t you leaving?” I resist the urge to roll my eyes. “Not yet. I’m not ready to leave,” I answer honestly. I need another moment with Dev. This is my last chance with him. Lila stands slightly behind her husband, peering over his shoulder at me. Rajas clears his throat. “Don’t be too long.” I nod as he straightens his suit jacket. “I won’t be much longer.” Stiffly, he takes Lila’s hand and starts for the doors. I watch them leave. Rajas pauses at the door and looks back for one last look at his son. He looks heartbroken, and while he might be a raging asshole to me, I think he truly loved his son—well, at least the one. He shakes his head and places his hand on Lila’s waist, ushering her out the door. The heavy doors bang closed and I’m finally alone with Dev. I lean forward with my elbows on my knees and bury my face in my hands. One tear. All I ask is for one tear. One tear for the man I love. I get nothing. “Oh, Dev,” I whisper into the empty church. “Why has this happened?” Of course no one answers. Time passes slowly as I sit, and still no tears come even as I beg—beg to feel something besides this emptiness now residing in my chest. The doors behind me open, and I jump to a standing position, thinking it’s Rajas come to tell me my time is up. “Sorry, I’m sorry,” I stammer, my head bowed as I grab my coat. “I was going.” “Oh?” responds a voice I don’t recognize but feels entirely familiar at the same time. “What the—?” My head shoots up and my eyes connect with violet ones. I nearly choke on my tongue because the guy is gorgeous. He narrows his eyes on me, his two dark brows drawing together. He’s handsome, it’s undeniable. His black hair is brushed away from his face and his skin is a beautiful honey color, and I wonder if it’s as soft as it looks. His face is chiseled, with full lips, and a dimple in his chin. He’s tall, easily six-feet, but I’d say taller, and lean but still well built so it’s clear he works out. His dress shirt clings to his chest and his gray dress pants hang delectably on his hips. And I’m checking out a guy at my boyfriend’s funeral. Just fucking great. The man stalks toward me slowly, his brows still drawn together, giving him an angry look. Each step is slow and deliberate like he’s stalking a frightened deer. I probably do look like a deer caught in headlights. “You are?” he asks in a British accent. My hands wring together. His intensity has me unnerved. “Sloane,” I reply. “Sloane,” he repeats, testing out my name on my tongue. He makes a face, and I’m not sure he likes the flavor. His unusual violet eyes narrow on me. “What are you doing here?” I swallow thickly. “I’m attending my boyfriend’s funeral.” He looks around at the empty room and then back at me, as if to make a point. I clear my throat. “Everyone … uh … left.” “But not you?” He stares at me like I’m some fascinating exotic bird he’s just discovered. I have news for him—I’m not interesting. I look to the floor, my shoes, anything but his inquisitive violet eyes that seem to see too much. “They don’t like me,” I finally respond. “I wanted a moment alone.” His laugh fills the air, and it surprises me. I get the impression this isn’t a man who laughs a lot. “We have that in common, Sloane.” “What?” I asked stupidly. “They don’t like me either,” he whispers conspiratorially, like he’s letting me in on some sort of secret. “Why?” I ask, my eyes roaming over him. He looks familiar, so much like Dev, but I know I’ve never met him before. He shrugs. “Because I dare to go against the grain. I find rules are meant for breaking.” “Who are you?” I finally ask, in awe of him. I feel like he’s put a spell on me or something. “Siva,” he answers. My eyes narrow in thought. I know his name—but how? My mouth pops open as clarity hits me. Oh. Siva … as in Siva Kapur. Dev’s brother is back.

The Day I Stopped Falling for Jerks, the first in the fun and flirty Jerk Duet from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe is LIVE!

BOOKONE_JERKDUET_TheDayIStoppedFallingForJerks_FinalCover.jpg

I have a long history of dating the wrong men.
You know the ones I’m talking about.
The beautiful, charming guys who are quite literally too good to be true.
The ones who are impulsive in love and prefer short flings over long-term relationships.
I’m talking about the jerks.
The guys who taste so good, but are so very bad.
After going through the most ridiculous breakup in the history of breakups, I thought I’d learned my lesson. I officially put myself into jerk rehab and committed to changing my ways.
But, let’s be real here, love is never that easy.
Especially when an arrogant, charming, he-devil of a sexy alpha man gets involved.
Aussie accent.
Tanned skin.
Muscular, surfer bod.
Gorgeous brown eyes.
And the kind of sexy smile that brings women to their knees.
Oh, did I mention that he’s also my best friend’s brother?
Yeah. This story, my story, it’s a real doozy you guys.
The day I stopped falling for jerks, I met Oliver Arsen—the biggest jerk of all.

Review:

This was a great start to this duet! This is the first part of Lucky and Ollie's story. Lucky is a writer/blogger/social media guru for an online lifestyle website. She has a really poor relationship history and finds herself always picking jerks to date and getting her heart broken. When her most recent relationship goes belly up in spectacular fashion, she finds herself swearing off jerks for good. Her boss decides to send her on a several months-long assignment flying around the world writing about the professional surfing circuit. The assignment was set up by Lucky's best friend, Ally, because Ally's brother, Oliver Arsen, is a former pro surfer who runs the circuit. When Lucky meets Ollie, she thinks he is another huge jerk, albeit a super hot one. Sparks fly between them and as they are forced to spend time together over the next few months, Lucky starts to wonder if Ollie isn't the jerk she thought he was and if she could be falling for him.

This book was really good. It is told from Lucky's POV and is mainly told as she narrates a podcast about her bad luck in love and how her relationship unfolds with Ollie. I loved Lucky's character and her voice. She is funny, down to earth and good at her job. Her podcasts were so candid and real. I think this would be a great book to listen to on audio because it would be like listening to a podcast. I liked Ollie too, although he is a little mysterious because we don't get his POV. I can't wait for the second book in the duet so we can find out what he has been thinking or hiding. Ollie seems to be very laid back, charming and a nice guy, not really a jerk. But some of his actions are unclear, from Lucky's POV, so I can't wait to see what his reasoning is.

Lucky's relationship progression with Ollie is kind of a slow burn. One thing that bothered me a bit is that there is little active pursuit of each other on either of their parts, it just kind of happened. They were traveling on the same circuit and staying in the same hotels, but would go days between trying to see each other. There was no urgency to be together. That was a little bothersome to me, because I like that tension in romance books. But that did get better as the book went along. I still really liked the book. I think Ollie and Lucky make a great couple. The story is fresh, exciting and original. I loved the surfing aspect, as well as Lucky's writing and podcasts. Her quest to go back over her past relationships, by writing Dear Ex letters, to figure out why she keeps picking jerks and where she went wrong, is fascinating and heart-felt.

Overall, this was a really good book and I will be waiting for book two in this duet with baited breath!

Excerpt:

The Day I Stopped Falling for Jerks podcast
Episode 1: “Is this thing on?”

Hi, everyone.
I’d like to welcome you to episode one of my very first podcast.
[quiet, hesitant laugh]
I’m a little nervous, so please bear with me as I try to figure out how to podcast.
See, I’m more a writer of words than a podcaster of words, but what I’m about to tell you is honestly too damn big to fit into one of my columns.
Way too big.
It’s a real doozy, guys, but I have to get it out.
And I’m hoping, once I finish recording this—since my boss says I might start feeling symptomatic of, say, poisoning, if I ruin this new venture—I’ll actually be able to upload it to Scoop’s website. Apparently, I’m told, podcasting is the wave of the future, and if we—meaning Scoop—don’t get our foot in the door first, we—meaning I—might as well find another room. Room meaning office.
I’m pretty sure she’ll fire me, okay?
Still, I figure pouring my guts out to a bunch of strangers has to be at least close to therapeutic, so consider my fingers and toes crossed that my technical inability doesn’t mean it’s for nothing.
[mumble from producer]
Oh, good. I’m told the uploading portion of this podcast will be taken care of by someone else. Smart move, guys.
[laughs again]
Okay, so where do I even begin?
[long, audible sigh]
Well, I guess my love life would be a good start, huh?
I mean, it’s the whole reason I’m here, ready to pour my heart out to you.
The past.
The present.
The future, as I’ve sworn and promised it to myself.
They’re all kind of a hot mess, but it’s really the chaos I’ve gotten myself into this time that made me decide to take action.
Think of a woman trying to stand up in a hammock during an earthquake, and then throw in a writhing pit of cobras dancing below it for good measure. Add in the task of juggling several oddly shaped objects and a horrible lack of hand-eye coordination, and you might have some idea of what I look like while trying to navigate lust, like, and love.
Relationships, dating, finding love…God, you guys, it is so hard.
I envy those people who manage to find the love of their lives on a first date or—even more mind-blowing—a chance encounter a la love-at-first-sight that blossoms into a long-term courtship.
Like, how in the hell does that even happen?
It feels like some trippy, magical unicorn kind of stuff or, worse yet, an evil consecration for those with a special, dark gift. And I’m not exactly comfortable exploring how many pagan gods I’d have to promise ill-willed deeds to in order to experience the easy road to love.
Heck, even the hard road.
As long as it didn’t end in disaster, I’d be ahead of where I am now—where I always seem to be.
See, I’ve been a serial dater, a constant cultivator of bad relationships, for as long as I can remember.
Even my kindergarten boyfriend, Kenny, is a prime example of what I’ve come to know as normal.
He was a swoony little guy, even at the ripe age of nearly six, and I was a naïve five-year-old, hungry for pure love. We were happy for about a day and a half, but when another skirt-wielder, Amber Carter, ran by, the apparent love of his life—Kenny’s description of me—wasn’t the only twinkle in his mossy green eyes anymore. One push off the monkey bars, and my first official relationship promptly ended in what would be one of many breakups for me.
Think of all the very worst guys to date—the players, the weirdos, the clingy momma’s boys, and the jerks…good God, picture the jerks.
Do you have those men in your head?
Well, I, Luciana “Lucky” Wright, have dated them all.
It might sound like an exaggeration, but it’s not. I’ve been there, done that, written the book, and filmed the Lifetime movie.
And all those good-for-nothing men left me with were weeks filled with Netflix binges fueled by ice cream and the same question rolling through my mind—Where are all the good men?
You know, the men who are actually worthy of us. The men who know what they want and have good intentions to boot. The ones who know how to truly love a woman, one woman, for the rest of their lives.
Are they underground somewhere? In one of those highly discriminatory bunkers from the movie Deep Impact, perhaps? Do I actually have to discover the meaning of life to get the password?
I honestly don’t know. But I believe, in order for you to truly understand my frustration, I need to show you the final straw in my never-ending cycle of dating jerks. The moment that made me say “Sayonara, Jerks!” and write them off for good.
It’s going to feel like some serious Romeo and Juliet kind of stuff, but I can tell you, a Shakespearean love story it is not.

Keep listening. You’ll see.
