Review: Hooking Him by Aurora Rose Reynolds

Hooking Him
by Aurora Rose Reynolds

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aurora Rose Reynolds comes the sizzling final installment to the humorous and heart-filled How to Catch an Alpha series.

Anna McAlister needs a new life. But that doesn’t mean she needs a new man. After leaving her fiancĂ© and Chicago behind, she promises herself no dating until she finds what she’s looking for. But meeting one seriously hot and determined detective has her questioning herself.

Calvin Miller is that detective, and he’s been burned by women in the past. It’s easy for him to sleep alone and focus on his work, but the moment he lays eyes on Anna, he starts imagining sexy nights with her wrapped in his sheets. Maybe it’s time to get back out there.

But just as the attraction between them begins to sizzle, Anna’s past shows up to create trouble. And to make matters worse, a string of murders forces Calvin to juggle his new relationship and his career. His worst fear? That the two are somehow connected.

Can they find love together, or will her past and his duty sink their hopes?

The wait is over! Hooking Him, the third and final book in the How To Catch an Alpha series is now LIVE and available in #kindleunlimited.

3.75-4 stars
****

This was really good! I have been kind of in a book funk and this was just what I needed to snap out of it. Hooking Him is the third book in the How to Catch an Alpha series and is Anna and Calvin's book. Anna has recently moved to a small South Carolina town from Chicago, where she left an unhappy engagement, to find herself. She has a new best friend in her elderly, quirky landlady and a job working at the town bakery. She meets hot cop Calvin when her landlady is pulled over with her in the car on the way to bingo. He is interested in her right away, but she is reluctant to get into a new relationship. Still, he is convincing and the two soon fall in love.

This was just a fun, easy comfort read. I really liked Calvin and Anna. They were sweet and sexy together. Anna was not as immature or sassy as sometimes Ms. Reynold's heroines are. I loved the SC beach town vibe and it reminded me of home, as I was born and raised there. The elderly, Golden Girls-esque ladies were a hoot, too.

Overall, this was a good story, entertaining, sweet, sexy and enjoyable. I think this one is my favorite of this series. I look forward to more from Ms. Reynolds in the future!

About Tessa

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.
Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the workforce as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.
She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eleven years and seven-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Sneak Peak: Hooked on You by Stacey Lynn + Excerpt!

HOH - SP banner

Hooked on Her, an all-new sexy and flirty, forbidden romance from Stacey Lynn is releasing June 23rd, and we have the first sneak peek!

HookedOnHer-IceKings-ebook

Synopsis:

Tessa Chauncy is the best kind of trouble. Beautiful, sweet and completely off limits. I’ve sat by and watched other men drool after her and forced myself to stay in check. Hey, I’m in the NHL... I have self-control in spades.
Except when it comes to her.
With the bat of her lashes and quick whip of that sharply pointed tongue Tessa can knock grown men to their knees. I’ve seen them wither and crumble under her confident stare— something I’m pretty sure she learned from sparring with me, thankyouverymuch.
But I’m not just falling for her. I’m down for the count.
She’s the girl I wanted, when wanting her was wrong. She’s also my new roommate-- And oh yeah, my best friend’s little sister.
Heaven help me, I’m probably going to get his fist to my face or his hockey stick shoved in very dangerous places for what I’m about to do, but I don’t think I care anymore.
I’m in love with my best friend’s little sister….and I’m done waiting.

HOH - Teaser 3 PO

Excerpt:

While Tessa gapes at me like a fish, frozen to her spot, I take advantage of her shock and step through her brother’s front door and curl my hands around her shoulders, gently placing her to the side so I can enter.
She’s standing in front of me in a pair of black sweats that bunch at her ankles and a pale pink tank top with straps so thin I can see a strap of her bra peeking out from beneath on her shoulder. Her hair is piled on her head and I don’t think she has a speck of makeup on because I can see freckles dance across the bridge of her nose.
She’s also never been sexier.
“Tessa.”
It comes out on a groan and since she’s still gaping at me, I step forward. Another step. I move slowly, give her time to realize what I’m about to do and she either wants it as much as me, or she’s in some serious shock.
I reach out my hand and slide it to her neck where her pulse vibrates beneath my palm.
“Jason—”
“Don’t tell me to stop.”

REVIEW:

3.5-3.75 stars

Hard Pass is the first book in the Trophy Boyfriends series by Sara Ney. This is Miranda and Noah's story. Noah is a pro baseball player. He is a bit of a shy, loner and has a complex about his looks, based on his past experience with women. Miranda is recently graduated and wants to open her own design business. Miranda's grandfather left her his valuable baseball card collection that she plans on selling to raise money to start her business. When she places an ad online selling her cards, Noah sees the ad and jumps at the chance to own a piece of his sport's history. He texts her and the two have an instant chemistry. Over time, as they text about the cards, their conversations lead to an attraction and eventually meeting up and dating.

This book was a very light, easy read. The meet cute and the texting were fun and were my favorite part. I liked the story, but there was not much to the story beyond the meet cute. It felt more like a novella than a full book. I never felt like the couple grew fully comfortable with or got to know each other super well. This book has the familiar feel of Ms. Ney's Jock Hard series. The characters are no longer in college and are supposed to be a bit more mature, but I didn't quite feel like they were. Still, I liked Noah and Miranda. Noah was sweet and shy. He had a complex about his looks and thought he was ugly. Miranda never thought that and was attracted to him right away. I did find it a little odd that he never told her about his insecurity about his looks, when it would have explained his behavior more. Still, I thought they were a cute, sweet couple and there is little drama between them.

Overall, this was a cute, low angst read. I enjoyed Miranda and Noah's relationship. I like Ms. Ney's writing and this was a fun start to a new series. I look forward to what she comes up with next.

New Release: The Dare by Elle Kennedy + Review!

The Dare by Elle Kennedy is now available!

College was supposed to be my chance to get over my ugly-duckling complex and spread my wings. Instead, I wound up in a sorority full of mean girls. I already have a hard time fitting in, so when my Kappa Chi sisters issue the challenge, I can’t say no.

The dare: seduce the hottest new hockey player in the junior class.

Conor Edwards is a regular at Greek Row parties…and in Greek Row sorority beds. He’s the one you fall for before you learn that guys like him don’t give girls like me a second glance. Except Mr. Popular throws me for a loop—rather than laughing in my face, he does me a solid by letting me take him upstairs to pretend we’re getting busy.

Even crazier, now he wants to keep pretending. Turns out Conor loves games, and he thinks it’s fun to pull the wool over my frenemies’ eyes.

But resisting his easy charm and surfer-boy hotness is darn near impossible. Though I’m realizing there’s much more to Conor’s story than his fan club can see.

And the longer this silly ruse goes on, the greater the danger of it all blowing up in my face.

Review:

3.5- 3.75 stars

This was a cute book! The Dare is part of the Briar U series and is Conor and Taylor's story. Conor is a cutie pie who walked on to the hockey team and Taylor is an insecure, plus sized girl in a sorority. Taylor is at a party at when her mean girl sorority sister dares her to hook up with hot, popular Conor. She asks him to play along with her and to pretend like they hooked up, when instead the two spend hours talking in a bedroom upstairs. The two find they have chemistry and fun banter. To keep the mean girls at bay, they become friends and pretend to be dating. Soon their pretend relationship starts to feel very real and they fall for each other.

This was a fun story. I liked Conor and Taylor. They both have insecurities in different ways and are just trying to make their way, navigate friends and school, and figure out who they are meant to be. They also both aren't sure they are worthy of being in a relationship with each other. Those issues lead to a few bumps along their journey. I do have to say that I enjoyed the first 90% of the book more than the end. The climax happens at the last minute and made it a little hard for me to feel the love between the couple again afterwards. They both have a few immature moments and I was left feeling a little unsure that they would not screw up again. I just wasn't totally sure that Conor and Taylor could mature into an adult, forever relationship. More resolution would have helped in this case. Still, I enjoyed most of the book a lot, even if it didn't completely wrap up in a nice bow like I wanted, which is probably more realistic anyway.

Overall, The Dare was an entertaining, light and easy read. It brought me back to that nostalgic feeling of navigating relationships for the first time while having a fun college experience. Conor and Taylor were a very real and relatable couple with great chemistry. I enjoyed seeing their relationship develop into love. The Briar U series is such a fun series. I look forward to what Ms. Kennedy comes up with next.
