Synopsis:

Truth: Penn Walker entered my life like a summer storm—dark, ominous, and filled with thunder.

After witnessing my husband’s murder, I didn’t have much of a heart left to offer a man.

But Penn took it all.

Every jagged shard.

Every broken bit.

Even the dirty and twisted pieces that I wish never existed.

Lie: I didn’t need him to save me.

Lie: I knew exactly who he was.

Lie: Losing him wouldn’t destroy me.

But that’s the thing about lies—you never know who to believe.

REVIEW:

3.75-4 stars
****

This is a good book! The Truth About Us is the conclusion to the Truth Duet. This book is the continuation of Penn and Cora's story. I really enjoyed book one, which ended in a cliffhanger,  and I was excited to read this book. I was not disappointed and was definitely satisfied with the conclusion to their story.

The story in this duet is very good. It is different that most anything I have read, gritty and real with a lot of heart. This duet has some pretty major twists and turns. I am not sure what I can say about the plot without spoiling anything so I have to be delicate in what I can say. Book one ended on cliffhanger and left Cora heartbroken. I definitely felt her pain. When the two are reunited, Penn has to work to regain her trust and make her realize how much he loves her. I liked that she made him work for it. I wanted a bit more happy times between them after that, though. I definitely felt the very strong love between them and waas happy they got the happy future together that they deserved.

One thing that bothered me was the situation with Penn's dead wife.  Reading books about widows or widowers doesn't always work for me as a reader. In this case, we know that Penn is a widower. In book one, I didn't feel like Cora was a consolation prize to Penn and was satisfied with how the was handled. However, in this book, his dead wife has a big presence in this book and she is talked about a lot. It is a personal pet peeve of mine, so it probably won't bother any other readers. I do think Penn loved Cora a lot. I just didn't love the shadow of the dead wife hovering in the background.

Also, I did think the end wrapped up a bit abruptly and quickly. I wanted to see more of Cora and Penn's future together. There is a nice, jump ahead epilogue, but I felt it maybe jumped to far ahead. I wanted to see more of what happened right after the conflict. I wanted more details about how Cora got used to being free and to being wealthier and in an upper class, after having been so poor, living in a brothel, and going through everything she had gone through.

Overall, though, this book is a good conclusion to Cora and Penn's story. This duet was fresh, different and interesting. I really liked Penn and Cora's characters and the strong love they felt for each other. I liked the side characters of Drew, Savannah and River. I hope that Drew gets a story later on, as well. This series is sexy, gritty, and suspenseful. Ms. Martinez takes us on an emotional roller coaster and I enjoyed the ride! I look forward to more from her in the future!

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children. Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta.
