This was kind of an odd book to me and was not my favorite by JEA. Jersey Six is a twisty, turny book with some darkness and grit to it. I can't even go into the plot without spoiling the story, as this book has some big twists and secrets. I will say this- Jersey Six is homeless. She has led a hard life- being abandoned at birth, going from foster home to foster home, being abused and then running from the only home she ever felt safe in, when her foster parents are killed. She is living and working in a boxing gym when the chance to get revenge for those deaths presents itself and she takes it. But she has to become close to a famous, mysterious rock star to do it.
This is a tough book to review. I can't even really put my finger on why I did not love it, except that some parts of the plot were too vague or not believable. The relationships between some of the characters did not make sense to me. I was intrigued by this story and could not put it down. But I didn't particularly like any of the characters, or their behavior, nor understand them. Many situations are confusing, nothing is clear, and you don't know who is telling the truth. The characters all run hot and cold in their behavior.
Jersey was a tough girl and I didn't really "get" her. She was pretty emotionally stunted from her past, often immature and violent, and her idea of love and relationships are messed up. The other two main characters in the book, Chris and Ian, were no better to me. It was very hard to identify with them. I really was not a fan of the angst. I had no idea who to pull for or trust as a reader. One of the surprise twists was not my favorite element to read about and felt a little gimmicky.
There is a romance between Jersey and one of the men, but we don't know what is real and what is an act. But I didn't really buy into this book as a romance, more as a mystery or suspense. I had a hard time believing in an HEA for any of the characters after the events in this book. There was no trust or real happy times to build on. I did end up feeling the love between the couple, but there is a months long separation. It all just felt like too much to get over. There is an epilogue that shows that they made it work somehow, in which they are happy and together. I was happy they got to that point, but I would have liked to see more of how that came to be.
Overall, I was fascinated by this book, even if I did not feel a big connection to the characters. It was a fast paced, interesting read that kept me sucked in throughout the book. While it was not my favorite JEA book, I still think it is worth reading. It was definitely unique, as are all of this author's books. I don't know how she comes up with her stories, but I look forward to whatever she comes up with next.
