New Release: Veils by Brynne Asher + Review!

Veils by Brynne Asher is Now Available!

Blurb:

“Give me a memory, Noah.” That’s what she said … the woman who rendered me stupid in the shadows at a wedding reception. I did everything I could to figure her out. She wore more veils of armor than I’ve seen in a lifetime. On the outside, she was strong and self-assured. But within those beautiful, guarded blues? She was laced with vulnerability and grief. We had one night. The best night. She got the memory she wanted, but in the process, I was left branded. Then she thought she could strut out my front door and my life, right after announcing she was my boss’s baby sister. I had no choice but to follow. Not only did I go after her, I chased her halfway around the world. Because when it comes to her, one memory isn’t enough. It doesn’t matter that there couldn’t be a more opposite pair than us. Gracie Cain is a healer. I’m Noah Jarvis, a cold-hearted killer. But when my job came back to bite me in the ass, I wasn’t the only one caught in the crossfire. It bought us memories no one was counting on. That’s when all the veils were ripped off.

Veils was a really good book! This is the fourth book in the Killers series and is Gracie and Noah Jarvis's story. I have been looking forward to Jarvis's book for a while and was not disappointed! I can't say anything about the story without spoiling it. I can say that Gracie is Grady's little sister. She and Jarvis meet, sparks fly and an amazing story follows.

I adored Noah and Gracie. They were so sweet and sexy together. I loved his nickname for her, Lover. The story was emotional, but also uplifting. Both of them go through a lot. They made a great match. They were both strong and caring for each other to lean on in hard times. There wasn't much pushing away; they clung to each other. This was an easy, hard to put down read.

Overall, I really enjoyed this sweet, sexy, adventure filled, suspenseful and emotional read. I was happy to see this couple get their well-deserved HEA. This was a really good book and I look forward to more from Ms. Asher in the future!

New Release: Tangled Up in Christmas by Lisa Renee Jones + Review!

I might be a country girl from the same small town of Sweetwater, Texas, as horse wrangler Roarke Frost, the girl next door who knows him like few know him, but I didn't know enough to save my heart.

He's the reason why I left Sweetwater behind.

But now fate proves she loves a wicked twist and sends me back to Sweetwater to pull together a Christmas festival—and I run smack into the man again, quite literally. His body is pressed to mine, his hands on my arms, and I'm melting like chocolate in the sizzling Texas sunshine. And I run.

I know it’s not exactly respectable, but it works, just not for long. No matter how much I try to get tangled up in Christmas, I end up tangled up in Roarke instead—and the man has me feeling the heat of our attraction and the warmth of our past friendship. He feels like Mr. Right, but history says he’s Mr. Wrong.

But if he wants a second chance, Roarke Frost is going to have to work for it. He’ll need to prove to me that this holiday is a season of new beginnings, the kind that last forever.

Aww, this was a really sweet book. Tangled Up in Christmas is book two in the Texas Heat series. I enjoyed book one, but didn't totally love it. I liked this book much better. This book is Hannah and Rourke's story. Hannah and Rourke grew up together in their small Texas town, Sweetwater. They were friends and, when they got older, that grew into love one summer and an engagement. But it all ended quickly after some family drama and a misunderstanding. Hannah left town and was gone for six years, but now she is back in Texas. Everything has changed. Rourke is now a veterinarian and a Youtube star, the Horse Wrangler, in their small hometown. Hannah is starting her own business as an event planner in Dallas. She is surprised when her first big job brings her back to Sweetwater and back to Rourke. The two of them still have strong feelings for each other and a lot of issues to work out between them, but they can see that they are meant to be together.

I really liked Hannah and Rourke together. Theirs' was a good second chance love story. They had great chemistry and were best friends. This book was the perfect length and amount of angst. The story and writing were very good. I also liked the horses and all the animals included.

Overall, I really enjoyed Hannah and Rourke's journey back to each other. Tangled Up in Christmas is a sexy and sweet small town romance. I still think this series feels very different that anything Lisa Renee Jones has written before, but I enjoyed it anyway. I look forward to more from Ms. Jones in the future.

Bonus book: Santa, Baby

There was a bonus book included in the last 43% of Tangled Up in Christmas. Santa, Baby is a Cinderella-like story between a millionaire businessman and a reserved book store owner. I found it to be a cute, steamy, sweet and sexy read. There was a little added angst from an FBI investigation too. This was a fun bonus story.

Her childhood best friend, Mary, was the last known victim of Jack the Ripper. It’s been two years since Fiona scrubbed Mary’s blood from the floorboards, and London is no longer buzzing about the Ripper, but Fiona hasn’t forgotten. She hasn’t stopped searching for Jack.

When she’s called to a murder in the middle of the night, Fiona finds a victim mutilated in an eerily similar fashion to those of the Ripper, and only a few doors down from Mary’s old home. A clue that will lead her down a path from which there is no return.

REVIEW:

The Business of Blood is Kerrigan Byrne's foray into Historical Fiction. I have loved her Historical Romances and I loved this book just as much. It was so good! This book focuses on Fiona Mahoney and takes place in London in 1890. At twenty nine, she is a spinster who cares for her ailing Aunt. She is also in the business of blood, meaning she cleans up murder and death scenes. While that is her main job, she also has a fascination with Jack the Ripper. He killed her long time friend and since then she has been obsessed with him. She finds herself investigating the deaths she cleans up, much to the annoyance of the local police. Especially the grumpy detective, Croft. She also deals with various underworld criminals in her investigations. In this book, there is a mystery that Fiona is trying to uncover, as well as her working to try to find out who Jack the Ripper is. I don't want to give away much else about the story to not spoil the mystery, but I enjoyed this so much.

This story was so good. It was such an interesting, engaging, fast-paced story. I couldn't put it down. I loved the atmosphere of this book. If you have watched the show Taboo, it reminded me of that. A little dark, gory and mysterious. I loved the mystery, finding out more about Jack the Ripper and how murder investigations in that time period were handled. I adored Fiona. She is smart, independent and determined, but she also has some demons from her past to battle. She is strong and capable, but vulnerable on the inside. It's been a long time since I read a book that wasn't romance. While this book was not a romance, there are several intriguing men that seem to have an attraction to Fiona. I could feel chemistry between her and a few of the characters. I found myself hoping for a little romance, which added the extra spark I needed. I'm hoping something develops for Fiona on that front in future books, too.

Overall, The Business of Blood was an addicting, suspenseful read. I enjoyed it very much and can not wait for more from this series!

Excerpt

Aidan stood behind me for a moment, motionless and silent. I could hear every word ever spoken and unspoken between us spilling onto the ground at my back. “I understand what the years have done to you, Fiona. I know all the reasons you do what you do.” The pity in his voice summoned a scream from deep, deep in my soul, and I swallowed three times to keep it from escaping. “I appreciate that you have to be cold sometimes. But have a care this profession of yours doesn’t make you heartless.” Heartless. Struck by an idea, I frantically searched until I found Frank Sawyer’s heart in the center of the basin. An unceasingly strong muscle upon which one’s entire existence depended. I counted four chambers. Four valves. I stared hard, unblinking in the wan light until Aidan’s retreating footsteps plodded away. I’d never found Mary Kelly’s heart. I’d never found Mary Kelly’s heart. Every single part of her had been catalogued in all its exposed and grotesque exactitude. But not her heart. The Ripper had taken that, along with her life. I searched for the palpitations to prove Aidan wrong and found them, faint and fluttering, against my rib cage. I still had a heart, even though he owned pieces of it. And yet, I’d stood over too many corpses of those I loved, each time expecting my bleeding heart to just…stop. It should, I think. When a heart was broken as many times as mine, it shouldn’t work anymore. But somehow, it still did. It kept going. And so long as it beat in its chamber, I’d search for the Ripper.

This book was really good! Gypsy King is the first book in Tin Gypsy series by Devney Perry. This is Bryce and Dash's story. Bryce is a former news reporter for a tv station who recently moved to the small Montana town of Clifton Forge. She has left the big city life and joined her father, who runs the town newspaper, as a reporter. But the small town doesn't have much going on to report on. Except the Tin Gypsies. They were a local motorcycle club who had criminal ties, but they disbanded several years ago and no one knows why. Dash was the president of the club and now runs the town's car mechanic shop. When a body is found, murder shakes up the town and Bryce can't let the story go uncovered. She investigates the Tin Gypsies and falls for Dash along the way.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a great combination of MC club and romantic suspense. Bryce was such a fun character, very Nancy Drew-like. I really liked Dash too. They were very good together and had great chemistry. I very much enjoyed the murder mystery and suspense aspect as well. The mystery is not fully resolved, so I think it will continue in future books.

Overall, I connected with Gypsy King in a way that has sometimes eluded me in other Devney Perry books, so this is definitely my fave. This book has good romance, mystery, story and characters. I can't wait for more from this series in the future.

REVIEW:

3.25 stars
***

Beauty is the third book in the Faery series and is Lachlan, Shim and Bronwyn's book. Lachlan and Shim are symbiotic twins, Unseelie princes and vampires. They have known for years that their destined mate is Bronwyn, who is the younger sister of Beck and Cian from Bound, book one. They have seen her in their dreams, but never met her. When she was a young teen, her family was torn apart by tragedy and she is thought to be dead. But she was saved by Shim and Lachlan's sister and taken away to the refugee plain. There she has lived anonymously in hiding. Lachlan and Shim thought she was dead, but the three of them meet in their dreams. When war threatens the Seelies and Unseelies, Lach and Shim find out that Bronwyn is still alive and go to save her from evil forces that threaten to take over everything.

I liked this story in general. I liked Bronwyn and her guys. But I needed more happy time together between them. They are separated for much of the book and, when they weren't, they were mostly fighting. I thought this was a good fantasy story and ending to the series, but I wanted a bit more romance. The end felt rushed without enough resolution (or a romantic making up scene). The epilogue was not even focused on them. I felt like Bron, Shim and Lach had been through a lot and I would have loved to see them together and finally happy, after having worked everything out. Still, I did enjoy the book in general.

Overall, this was a pretty good fantasy read. Bronwyn, Shim and Lachlan were perfect for each other. I have really enjoyed this series and I look forward to whatever Ms. Blake comes up with next.

Blog Tour: Love in Due Time by L. B. Dunbar + Excerpt & Review!

GVL01-BANNER-BT-SBPR

Love in Due Time, an all-new second chance romantic comedy from L.B. Dunbar is available now!

20190718_GVL01_Love in Due Time_Dunbar_KDP_FINAL

Naomi Winters will be forty—soon-ish—and she’s only been with one man. One night. One time. Long ago. She believes everything happens for a reason, and the universe spoke about Nathan Ryder.

Nathan Ryder isn’t the same man who hightailed his bike out of Green Valley eighteen years ago. As a rule breaker, women are one area he acts a fool. Case in point…the local librarian. He can’t get a read on her, but she’s one risk he’s willing to take. Again.

What do an eccentric librarian and a sexy silver biker have in common? More than you think.
The due date on their love might not be expired after all.

'Love in Due Time' is a full-length, contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Green Valley Library series.

REVIEW:

This was a pretty good book, but it was not my favorite in the Smartypants universe. Love in Due Time by LB Dunbar is the first book in the Green Valley library series, which is a spin off of the Winston Brothers series by Penny Reid and part of the Smartypants Romance world. This book is Nathan and Naomi's story. Eighteen years ago, Naomi was a young adult with a free spirit. One fateful night she meets Nathan and they have a wild evening together, but the night ends in tragedy and forever changes both of their lives. Nathan leaves town and doesn't return for eighteen years. Now he is back in town as a single dad with two daughters, working as contractor. Now, Naomi is a Wiccan and a spinster librarian. She is picked on by many of the townspeople for being a witch and seems to have a lonely life. Nathan doesn't even recognize Naomi when he sees her again. But she recognizes him and he feels an attraction to her anyway. They begin a slow burn romance but have to deal with some issues with family, the town, the Iron Wraiths, the library and that fateful night they met.

I enjoyed this story. It was interesting and original. The writing was good, but I found the book too slow in parts. I didn't totally love Naomi and Nathan. I liked the idea of a witchy, quirky librarian, but she turned out to be pretty boring. Nathan was okay, but nothing special either. Together they had very little chemistry. I also did not love that Naomi was a near-virgin 40 year old (only having done it one time with Nathan only eighteen years ago). She was celibate, when he was definitely not, having had two kids at least two long-term relationships, being married and numerous one night stands. Also, he has a current f-buddy that he is involved with in town who is mentioned a lot on page, although he has no feelings for her. Naomi was pretty innocent about sexual stuff too, which I didn't really find cute at her age and intelligence. While she didn't immediately cave to him when he came back, she eventually did. I just didn't find it realistic or fair to have only been with one person, one time at her age. Naomi hasn't dated or kissed or done anything with a man in eighteen years. Nathan had a sense of pride that Naomi waited all those years for him and I found that a huge turn off. I did like the small town romance aspect, but I didn't think the town in the book felt like Penny Reid's version of town of Green Valley. It felt a little darker and more depressing. Still, I did like story in general. I also liked the librarian/library aspect and the glimpses of characters from the Winston brothers series.

Overall, I liked this book in general, while I didn't completely love it. Still, I was happy to that Naomi and Nathan were able to find happiness with each other. I like the idea for this series and I look forward to more from the librarians in the future!

Excerpt

“Naomi?” My hands cover her shoulders, holding her steady. “This is all my fault.” Her eyes widen, the widest I’ve ever seen. Panic fills them. “What do you mean?” “I … I can’t believe this happened again.” Her hands come to my chest, and she gently pushes at me. “You have to get out of here.” “What?” My brows pinch at the harsh tone. “You need to go. I can’t be near you.” Her voice struggles to stay level. Ouch. That stings a little. “Why?” I take one step back under the force of her hands. “I can’t be around you. This can’t happen.” “Lady, what are you talking about?” My voice roughens. “Bad things always happen after I’m with you.” I stiffen, straightening to my full height. My arms cross and I glare down at her. Saying such a thing is just downright mean. Her head shakes as her fingers curl along the open edges of my work jacket. Suddenly, I feel like she’s tugging me to her instead of pressing me away. What the … “When I’m with you, something happens. Something bad.” Her breath catches. “Because we kissed, the library is closing.” I stare at her. She can’t be serious, but I see the hysteria in her eyes, like a rabid, trapped animal. She actually believes what she says. “Well, we didn’t kiss,” I remind her, my tone stern and condescending. “I kissed you, remember? And you didn’t kiss me back, so I don’t think it counts.” She glares up at me, her fingers still gripping my open jacket. Her shoulders fall, her head lowers, and it’s as if I can visibly see her relax, like water cascading down a building, washing over her. Exhale. Settle. Exhale. Calm. “I didn’t kiss you back?” she questions and then her head pops up again. She nearly shrieks with the hesitant realization. Commence inhaling, like she’s winding up again. Full steam ahead. “I didn’t kiss you back,” she repeats, her excitement growing. Another exaggerated inhale. “I didn’t kiss you back!” Now, she’s just downright gloating, and the engine’s ready to blow. “You don’t have to sound so pleased,” I murmur. I glance up and notice Mrs. MacIntyre watching us through the window of the librarian’s office behind the check-out counter. Her eyes narrow and I’m certain we’re making too much noise for her liking. “I … I’m so relieved,” Naomi admits, her head falling forward, her fingers loosening on my jacket. Then her face turns up again. Her lids lift, slow and lazy. Her mouth curls in sweet relief, and she pulls herself up on her toes by the open edge of my jacket and does the damnedest thing. She kisses me.
