Remy Guidry doesn’t do relationships. He tried the marriage thing once, back in Louisiana, and learned the hard way that all he really needs in life is a cold beer, some good friends, and the occasional hookup. His job as a bodyguard with McKay-Taggart gives him purpose and lovely perks, like access to Sanctum. The last thing he needs in his life is a woman with stars in her eyes and babies in her future. Lisa Daley’s life is finally going in the right direction. She has finally graduated from college after years of putting herself through school. She’s got a new job at an accounting firm and she’s finished her Sanctum training. Finally on her own and having fun, her life seems pretty perfect. Except she’s lonely and the one man she wants won’t give her a second look. There is one other little glitch. Apparently, her new firm is really a front for the mob and now they want her dead. Assassins can really ruin a fun girls’ night out. Suddenly strapped to the very same six-foot-five-inch hunk of a bodyguard who makes her heart pound, Lisa can’t decide if this situation is a blessing or a curse. As the mob closes in, Remy takes his tempting new charge back to the safest place he knows—his home in the bayou. Surrounded by his past, he can’t help wondering if Lisa is his future. To answer that question, he just has to keep her alive.

SAY YOU WON'T LET GO by Corinne Michaels

I’ve had two goals my entire life: 1. Make it big in country music. 2. Get the hell out of Bell Buckle. I was doing it. I was on my way, until Cooper Townsend landed backstage at my show in Dallas. This gorgeous, rugged, man of few words was one cowboy I couldn’t afford to let distract me. But with his slow smile and rough hands, I just couldn’t keep away. Now, there are outside forces conspiring against us. Maybe we should’ve known better? Maybe not. Even with the protection from Wade Rycroft, bodyguard for McKay-Taggart, I still don’t feel safe. I won’t let him get hurt because of me. All I know is that I want to hold on, but know the right thing to do is to let go…

HIS TO PROTECT by Carly Phillips

Talia Shaw has spent her adult life working as a scientist for a big pharmaceutical company. She’s focused on saving lives, not living life. When her lab is broken into and it's clear someone is after the top secret formula she’s working on, she turns to the one man she can trust. The same irresistible man she turned away years earlier because she was too young and naive to believe a sexy guy like Shane Landon could want her. Shane Landon’s bodyguard work for McKay-Taggart is the one thing that brings him satisfaction in his life. Relationships come in second to the job. Always. Then little brainiac Talia Shaw shows up in his backyard, frightened and on the run, and his world is turned upside down. And not just because she’s found him naked in his outdoor shower, either. With Talia's life in danger, Shane has to get her out of town and to her eccentric, hermit mentor who has the final piece of the formula she’s been working on, while keeping her safe from the men who are after her. Guarding Talia's body certainly isn't any hardship, but he never expects to fall hard and fast for his best friend’s little sister and the only woman who’s ever really gotten under his skin.

After several harrowing weeks, her friend is now safe, but for Sadie, the repercussions of her rash act linger on. Chase Jackson, no stranger to dangerous situations as a captain in the US Army, has volunteered himself as Sadie's bodyguard. “Lisa? Are you listening to me?” Nope. “Yes, of course.” He stared at her like he knew she wasn’t listening. “I was saying you need to take this seriously. You’re in a dangerous position.” “Jimmy isn’t violent. He’s a jerk but he’s not violent.” Suddenly she wasn’t hungry. The whole day had been one long mistake. Did she need to cap it off by making one more? “You know what? I’m really tired. I think I’m going to go to bed.” His stare pinned her. “So I hit on a touchy subject and you punish me by sending me away?” “No, I’m tired and I had a shitty day and I want to go to bed.” “I want to go to bed, too,” he said, his voice low. The moment seemed to stop, his words right out there in the open, his eyes intent on her. There was heat in those eyes. “Ask me again, Lisa. Give me another chance.” All the reasons she shouldn’t fell away because damn it, she was an optimist and at some point in time her luck had to change. She didn’t want to miss that because she was too scared to try. “Would you like to go to bed with me, Sir?” “Tell me why you left the club.” Damn it. That wasn’t an answer. “Because I gave up my car and I didn’t want to admit it to my family because they’re nosy as hell. Because I’ve been too depressed to play. Because I couldn’t play with the man I wanted to play with.” His hand came out and he tugged her up, maneuvering her until she was sitting on his lap. And what a comfy lap it was. She fit easily, her butt on his big thigh, his muscular arm around her waist making her feel dainty and feminine. “I’m going home soon and I probably won’t be back,” he explained. She nodded. “It’s okay. I wasn’t looking to get married. I’ll be honest. When I asked you six months ago, I was looking for a Dom, but not now. Now I just want someone to help me get through the night.”

REVIEW:

4-4.25 stars
****

Wow. What can I say about this book without giving anything away? This is a hard review to write! I thoroughly enjoyed this duet. Jewel E. Ann amazes me with her originality every time I read a new book by her. She definitely is the most original writer I have ever read. Always unpredictable. This book has intrigue, suspense, mystery, humor, sweet and sexy moments, along with some emotional and heartbreaking moments, but love triumphs in the end. Epoch explores fate and spirituality, along with the theories of past lives and reincarnation.

I really enjoyed Swayze's growth and maturity over the course of this duet. She went through a lot and learned from what happened and from her mistakes. Actually, I was happy with all three main characters growth over the duet and they all ended up in a good place. I was happy with how everything turned out in the end. There were a few things that bothered me and that I didn't love along the way, but I was satisfied with the place that everyone ended up and that Swayze got the HEA she wanted. The epilogue was sweet too. Overall, I'm not sure there is anything I can say that will do this story justice without spoiling it. Swayze's story is an epic journey that transcend's time. The Transcend Duet is a series you have to experience for yourself. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

“I hear you’re saying yes to everything today?” I chased a bite of macaroni with some water. She nodded, smiling again as she chewed. “A guy could take advantage of that.” Her chewing stopped and her blue eyes snapped to mine. “Me, for example. I could use this to get exactly what I want.” I didn’t miss the way her eyes flared, and damn, it was sexy. If things were farther along—if this were a year from now and we were in a different place—I could have used this game to have her moaning yes all night long. But we weren’t there, and I wasn’t a complete asshole. But I did love to tease. “Poppy,” I whispered, leaning closer. Her breaths were shallow as she waited. “Will you bring me both the mixed berry and the apple pie?” She blinked twice, then a hand flew over her mouth—still full of salad—covering it as she laughed. “Yes.” I grinned, sitting back in my chair and digging into my food. “Maybe you can tell me more about this list too? It seems like every time I see you you’re on to something new.” Her hand fell. “You really want to know?” “I really want to know.”

REVIEW:

4.25-4.5 stars
****

This was a really good book for me! This was my first read by Devney Perry and I don't know why I waited to read her books. This is Poppy and Cole's book. Poppy was married to Jamie for two years when he was murdered in a robbery. Cole was the police officer who came to her house to inform her of his death. He sat with her for hours that night as she cried and informed her family. Now five years later, Poppy is still recovering from her loss. She has opened her own restaurant and is trying to begin the very slow process of moving on. The birthday list is a list her husband made before he died of things he wanted to do before his next birthday. Things like going to a karate class, swimming in a pool of green jello, and hiking to a lake nearby. Poppy decides to start doing the things on Jamie's list as a tribute to his life. She goes to do her first item on the list and comes face to face with Cole. They both remember each other and feel a connection to each other because of the evening of Jamie's death. Slowly they begin spending time together and Cole volunteers to help her check off the items on her list. Along the way, they fall for each other and begin a new journey towards love together.

Poppy had gone through so much with her husband's death. It had been 5 years when the book began and she was still very depressed and full of grief. I thought she might should have been farther along in her healing process. When Cole met her and started spending time with her, he saw her as charismatic and charming, while I didn't see that at all. I wondered why he liked her so much when it was obvious she was still grief stricken. But gradually I began to feel their connection. As Poppy began to heal and grow, I grew to like her character more and more. Cole, I liked from the beginning. He was pretty much perfect. Protective, a good guy, patient and understanding. He let Poppy set the pace in their relationship. This book was slow burn (first kiss at 58%), but it suited the circumstances and didn't bother me at all. Cole even knew he loved her before they first kissed. They had spent so much time together, becoming friends first and had grown so close that their relationship progression felt very natural. Cole and Poppy were a great couple and their personalities complimented each other perfectly.

The Birthday List is a "dead ex" book and that trope doesn't always work for me. But the sensitivity shown by the author to the circumstances, the slow burn, the pretty much perfect hero who is endlessly patient and doesn't push, along with the deceased spouse not being vilified or placed on a pedestal all worked together to make this a fabulous exception. I never felt like Cole was her second choice. I felt they were equal in Poppy's eyes, even though I liked Jamie's character less than Cole's, personally, just based on personality.

Overall, The Birthday List is an emotional, heart wrenching story of a woman overcoming tragedy and finding hope for the future in new love. There are sweet, funny, sexy, and heart breaking moments. I truly enjoyed this book and look forward to more from Ms. Perry!

 Excerpt:

“The fuck are you doing here?” “Elliott said you needed help. Here is your help.” Peyton gestured extravagantly to herself before she shut the door behind her. “And I know it’s about Chloe and her date, so cut to the chase.” Girl-talk. Of course she already knew. “I need to fill out her application,” I told her. “But I’m stuck.” She rolled her eyes. “And you can’t ask her to do it?” I stared at her flatly. “Right, no, of course,” she drawled, a tiny hint of her New Orleans drawl twanging at every word. “Why would you ask the woman you’re in love with to fill out her own dating record?” “Can you shut the fuck up and help me?” I threw my hands out to the sides. “I found her a match. Help me out here, Peyt.” My sister stilled. “You found her a match?” “Of course I did. I said I would, so I did.” “Wow. You’re actually going through with it. Kudos, bro.” She rounded my desk and perched on the arm of my chair. I glanced at her. “Can you put your chest away?” She tugged at the neckline of her shirt and pulled it right up. “Put away. Let me see what you’ve written so far.” She snatched the mouse out of my hand and scrolled. “Jesus, Dom,” she said after a minute. “This is basic. This won’t get her laid.” I didn’t want to get her laid. I wanted to get her a good date, not a fucking orgasm. “Whatever. Can you make her attractive to a random stranger?” “You can’t?” Peyton quirked an eyebrow and looked at me. “You’ve been attracted to her for at least ten years. Surely you can do better than this.” “Peyton. I want your help, not your bullshit.” “Good luck with that,” she muttered. “All right, move your ass. Let me do this for you.” “Don’t make her sound too attractive.” My voice was no louder than hers had been as I stood and made way for her to take my seat. She snorted, deleting everything I’d written except the first couple of questions. “I’m gonna make her so attractive that she has every eligible bachelor in New Orleans clambering for her attention.”

REVIEW:

4 stars
****

This was a good book! This is August and Gwen's story. August and Gwen were childhood next door neighbors and best friends. Their friendship ends when they were seniors in high school, through a series of miscommunications and insecurities. A year later, while in college, Gwen attempts to apologize, to repair the friendship and let August know that she really has romantic feelings for him. But, again, due to more miscommunication and stupid, young kid moments, they only end up hurting each other more and obliterating any chance of them having any sort of relationship. Gwen commits an act that she refers to as her WTF (Worst Terrible Fuckup) . Now, it is nine years later. Gwen has moved on from her childhood and has a good life, a great job, close friends. She is doing better, despite the fact that her mother, who she had a tumultuous relationship with, has recently died. On her last birthday, Gwen vowed to find out who her biological father is before her next birthday (her mother refused to tell he before her death). Now it is 2 days until her birthday. August shows up on her doorstep and a series of events lead them on an emotional adventure together to figure out what really happened between them and search to find the truth about her father as the clock counts down.

This book took place over a short period of time (less than 2 days). It is a whirlwind of emotions as Gwen and August work through the pain that tore them apart, forgive each other and build a new beginning together. I felt for both August and Gwen. Gwen's terrible childhood affected her self esteem and how she reacted when her friendship with August was broken. They both did some stupid things, but they were just kids and they never meant to hurt each other. Gwen's WTF moment did not bother me safety-wise. It was an obviously drunken mistake, which happened very quickly nine years ago and is not descriptive or enjoyed by her. It was obvious that their time to be together was now, when they had matured and realized they were never going to move on from each other. Neither of them had a meaningful relationship over the years because they were meant to be together. There is some suspense and mystery as Gwen and August worked to discover the truth about Gwen's father. I really enjoyed the emotions, humor, and love explored as their relationship develops. I loved both Gwen and August. They were perfect together and very obviously soulmates. I hurt for both of them and everything they went through to get to their HEA. There is a higher level of angst than I usually enjoy, but it did not bother me in this book. I wanted a little more closure in the end as I was left with some questions on what their relationship would look like (Long distance relationship? How often do they see each other?, etc.). I needed a little more info to feel completely secure in their HEA.

Still, overall, Licks was emotional, angsty, sweet and sexy read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I am really enjoying reading Kelly Siskind's books and look forward to more from her in the future!

This was a pretty good book. Until Arsen is part of Aurora Rose Reynold's Kindle world. This is Marina and Arsen's book. Marina is a Kindergarten teacher who has been left infertile after a car accident. She is depressed and shies away from relationships because of her inability to have children. When she is invited to a party at one of her student's houses (the Masons), she meets Arsen. He is police officer and he is immediately smitten with Marina. He pursues her and they begin to fall for each other, but Marina is scared of how he will react when he finds out about her infertility. There is some suspense and some relationship drama, but it all works out in the end.

Arsen and Marina were okay characters for me. Arsen has kind of thoughtless a few times and really hurt Marina. But she forgave him easily. Marina was a very weepy and depressed. She had no spunk and never showed a happy side to her personality. I did like the story and found it interesting; I just didn't completely love the characters. Still, I did find the book entertaining overall and felt it made a good addition to this Kindle world series. I definitely recommend reading this book, along with the others in this fun series!
