I should tell Quinn and Clay that he’s here. But one look at him and it’s like the last ten years have never passed and I’m back at the bonfire, the awkward high schooler uncomfortable in her own skin. Marching away from him in the woods. He gives me a small smile, shifting his hold on the urn to wrap his free arm around me and pulls me into a strong hold. “You’re shakin’,” he says against my temple and I just nod. “I’m good, Clay. Go see your brother.” “I’m fine right where I am, sugar.” I keep my eyes to the ground, focusing on his worn boots instead of looking up, hating myself for making this moment about me when I should be focused on them. Like it or not, I can’t fight the feelings that being near him bring me. I’m that stupid, naive sixteen-year-old all over again. “Let’s get out of here,” he says after a few silent seconds. I look up and give him a smile, hoping that it looks a hell of a lot braver than I feel. Inside I feel like I might puke. “You think I could have a second with my family?” My head shoots up at the coldness I hadn’t anticipated in Maverick’s voice. He’s not focused on me, though, instead looking at his brother with a hard expression and one brow raised upward. “Mav!” Quinn gasps and he moves his attention from his brother to her. “Sorry, Quinn, but I’m thinkin’ that Clay’s lady friend would understand that this should be a moment for our family and give us time alone.” “I’ll just—” “Don’t you dare finish that sentence, sugar,” Clay all but spits through clenched teeth and drops his arm to take a step forward. “You’ve got something to say, Mav, then say it.” “Nothing to say, Clayton, I just think it would be nice for your girlfriend to give us some space.” “My girlfriend,” he parrots sarcastically, his deep voice vibrating in anger. “Mav.” Quinn attempts to butt in, but stops when Maverick leaves her side and turns to stalk out of the church. I should find it comical that he obviously didn’t recognize me, or hell, maybe he did and he’s just picking up where he left off ten years ago in the middle of the dark woods. I take a deep breath. “It’s okay. He’s right. Y’all need some time as a family. I’ll head over to the PieHole and start settin’ up for tonight.” Quinn brushes a tear from her cheek and just shakes her head. I look at Clay to see him staring in the direction that his brother just left. “You’re family,” he finally says, not looking in my direction. “Clay, really, it’s okay. It’s been a long time since y’all were back together and I don’t need to be there for that reunion. It sucks that it takes all of this to finally bring him home, but he’s here and y’all need to make up for a lot of time lost.” “Shut up, Leighton.” “Don’t, Clay.” “Don’t what? You’ve got every right to be here. You’re just as much a part of our family as he is. Hell, maybe even more so than he is at this point. So just shut up, come with us, and ignore him.” I shake my head, the fight instantly leaving my sails, knowing I would be arguing until the end of time if I pressed this issue. “I can’t believe he doesn’t even recognize you,” Quinn whispers.

My Review:

This is a good book! This is Maverick and Leighton's story. Maverick and Leighton grew up on neighboring farms together in Texas. Leighton was best friends with Quinn, Maverick's younger sister, but also good friends with him. They had a strong connection that was blossoming into romantic feelings. But Maverick had dreams of being a rodeo star and wanted to escape an abusive father. He pushed Leighton away and left town to follow his dreams. Now, ten years later, Maverick is back in town for his father's funeral. He also has injured himself and his rodeo career is over. He wants to make amends with his family and Leighton so they can go on and live the happy life they were meant to live together.

I really liked both Maverick and Leighton. Maverick knows he made mistakes in the past and is determined to make up for them. He gives great grovel and it is obvious how much he adores her. He never moved on from her in his heart. Leighton is unsure at first, but she can still feel the connection that she had with Maverick that never went away. They have a lot of time to make up and want to start right away. It was obvious to me as a reader that they were soul mates and meant to be together. The sexy times were hot, too, especially in the front pasture in the moonlight!

I liked that they got together early on in the book and spent most of the book together, working things out. This book had very little angst, which I did really like. It could have used a tiny bit more conflict for added interest, but, overall, I very much enjoyed Maverick and Leighton's love story. The story was interesting. The writing was very good and also a bit more mature than some other books by Ms. Sloan. I loved the Western/cowboy setting. The language was a bit hokey (ie, reckon's and darlin's) at times, but I got used to it and it didn't really bother me. The characters were great and lots of fun. I hope this book turns into a series, with Maverick's siblings stories to come.

Overall, this was a very sweet, character-driven love story! I very much enjoyed seeing Maverick and Leighton's relationship develop. I look forward to more from Ms. Sloan in the future!

“Are we a happy couple?” “I don’t think we’ve had time enough to be sure of that yet, but I know we were once.” She’d thought it through in a way she never had before. She had a much different view of those months with Kash in England. “You were courting me back then, weren’t you? You’re about to have access to all of it, aren’t you?” He had a point. “Even if I wasn’t, that wouldn’t be why I would want you, Kash. Sit down. We have some things to talk about before we get started. Come here close to me.” He moved to the chaise she was sitting on, lowering himself down with a sullen frown. “I knew there would be talking.” She was fairly certain his lovely flowers did very little talking, but he would get used to it. “Why did you want me back then?” “I liked you. I liked talking to you. I liked being around you. I rather liked who I was when I was around you.” His expression softened. “I don’t think you knew how alluring you were to someone like me. You didn’t understand how beautiful you were, so you didn’t use it against me. Most women do.” “Well, that happens when you surround yourself with women who are mostly valued for their looks. I don’t blame them. They’ve been told their beauty is the only thing worthy about them. If you want to meet women who don’t feel that way, you should probably expand out of models and actresses.” “Well, you would be surprised how many gorgeous, sexy physicists turn me down because I’m not smart enough for them.”

This book was pretty good, but I didn't feel like it lived up to it's potential to be great. This is Dayita/Day and Kash's story. Kash was the second son of the King and Queen of Loa Mali. He was always more intellectual and dreamed of advancing sciences for the people of his country. He met and became good friends with Day at college. They both were developing feelings for each other when Kash's father and brother died in a car crash, thrusting him from a life of academia to becoming King unexpectedly. The pressures of becoming King changed Kash into a playboy douche, which only got worse after a national tragedy struck. After years of scandals and irresponsibility, his mother decides to invoke a clause in the constitution saying that if Kash didn't enter into a marriage she arranged, he would abdicate the thrown. Kash is angry at firs, but he is even more shocked to discover his arranged wife is Day. He had never forgotten Day over the years and he finds that she even tried to contact him and he, her, but that comminucation had been blocked by his mother. He is willing to give a marriage to Day a chance. But Day doesn't think playboy Kash can be faithful so she doesn't know if it will be a marriage of convenience or a real relationship. They have a lot to work out between them. Especially when Kash finds out that Day is a Domme. They go through a lot of conflict and hardship over that fact, only made worse when it becomes apparent that someone is trying to kill one of them. The security team, consisting of McKay-Taggart staff, takes them to Sanctum to keep them safe. Kash and Day end up working out their differences and make plans for a happy future together.

I really liked Day. She was a domme, but she was such a nurturing, loving and caring domme. She was warm, not cold and bitchy like most dommes I've read about. She was so strong and confident in who she was. Day was also extremely intelligent and hard working. She was willing to give up a lot for the sake of her country's future. Kash, on the other hand, started the book as a conceited jerk and only improved a little bit by the end. I never really grew to like him very much. He was a manwhore, having slept with hundreds of women, but he was a total hypocrite when he found out that Day was a domme. The idea of a King being a submissive was very clever. The pressure and stress from being an active King and head of a country really built up for Kash. He needed the release of giving over control to Day to help him relax. I really liked the idea. But Kash was so resistant and judgemental about the idea of being a sub (even though he liked it in the bedroom before he knew that he was being submissive). He said some very hurtful things to Day about her dominance, like calling her a whore, making her feel small, etc. I had a hard time and never really forgave him for his behavior.

This book was not what I was expecting. Most times novellas are short and sweet, but this one was pretty long for a novella and also very angsty. Kash and Day were fighting most of the book. I felt really bad for Day in the way that Kash treated her. It was heartbreaking. I definitely shed some tears and felt she deserved someone who cared for her more and treated her better. Kash never really apologized for his behavior either. He needed to grovel, but he didn't. When their big conflict
was being resolved, I felt it was too little, too late.

I did enjoy the storyline and catching up with the rest of the Sanctum gang. I especially liked Ian's part. He always gives great, frank relationship advice.

Overall, I liked parts of this book, but I didn't love it. I liked the way the book started out but liked it less and less as I read on. I still do love this series though and will continue to read more from Ms. Blake in the future.

4.25-4.5 stars! This was a really good book! This is Dean and Ash's story. Ash is Julia (from Locked Box)'s older sister. She has a bad history of picking poor relationship partners. She gravitates towards lazy, sometimes abusive, bad boys. She sees her biological clock ticking down without having met a man to spend her life with. Now nearing thirty, Ash knows she wants children, and with a family history of early menopause, she is afraid to wait much longer to get pregnant. She makes plans to start fertility treatments and find a sperm donor, when she meets Dean at her sister's video game launch party. Dean is Julia's boyfriend, Max's roommate. He is enamored with Ash right away and can hardly believe she is interested in him. Ash is attracted to Dean, but doesn't think he would make a good partner long-term. He still lives with a roommate and floats from job to job. He doesn't seem responsible. That doesn't stop Ash from wanting to get him into bed though. But Dean wants more. He wants forever with Ash. He must prove to her that he would make a good husband and father. Ash and Dean go through a few bumps together but finally see that they are the perfect match for each other.

I loved Dean! He was such a different type hero. He was scatter-brained; he probably had ADD. But he was such a doll! So earnest and honest with Ash. He was in awe of her and that she would even give him the time of day. He would do anything to make her happy. It was so sweet and swoon-worthy! I liked Ash too. She was strong and take-charge, but she wasn't a bitch. Their chemistry was sizzling. I really liked their dynamic in the bedroom too. Dean wanted Ash to take charge so she did, but it was fun and flirty and not at all heavy and serious, like sometimes male sub books can be. Ash was willing to give him what he needed, but was not mean or cold to him in the process. There is no BDSM equipment used, no tying up or spanking or anything. Dean just wanted Ash to tell him what to do during sexy times. Their dynamic felt very true to life and was the best male submissive sexy times I have ever read. Ash and Dean were a great match. I felt like they brought out the best in each other. I definitely felt their connection to each other. There was not too much angst in the book. It was a pretty light, funny, sexy read, with a few emotional moments. The characters were original and had good depth. The story was unique and original. Also I enjoyed catching up with Max and Julia from Locked Box, too

Overall, I really enjoyed Dean and Ash's love story! I always enjoy Ms. Dangerfield's books, but I think this one might be my favorite!

“Did you enjoy the dessert? They had been planning on serving crème brûlée, but I remembered you like gelato. Strawberry.” She turned and Kash was standing in the doorway, the tie to his tuxedo undone and the first few buttons of his shirt open, showing off golden skin. Oh, how the girls must swoon over that man. Unfortunately for him, she was a woman and not a girl. She curtseyed, recalling her etiquette classes and going down deep, to show her respect for the crown. “I thank you, Your Majesty.” “Come now, Day. I asked you not to call me that long ago, and now it appears there’s even less reason. We were friends then. We’re going to be husband and wife in a week. Shocking how quickly that woman can move when she wants to.” He looked so composed, but she couldn’t forget that he’d only found out his mother was dying this afternoon. That was when she’d seen the real man. She’d interrupted them with her silly dress and she’d seen the shock and pain on Kash’s face before he’d smoothed it out and gone back to being the polite royal he’d become. “Are you all right?” She asked the question for two reasons. First, she wanted to know the answer and second, to see if they really were still friends. His lips curved up slightly. “I’m faring quite well. We Kamdars are made of sterner stuff than this. Did you enjoy the dinner?” So, not so friendly he would talk about private things with her. It was good to know where they stood. They needed to have a long conversation about how this was going to work. They might be marrying to protect the Kamdar line and to give his mother some peace, but they needed a plan of action about how best to achieve their goals. Partners. That was how she’d decided to look at this. They were partners. And if she ended up governing the kingdom while he was out fucking around with supermodels, she wouldn’t get her heart broken. Just humiliated. Yes, they needed a talk and perhaps a contract. “I enjoyed the meal very much. The company left something to be desired, but I suspect I’ll get used to dining with windbag politicians.” She turned back to the balcony, leaning against it. The view from here was spectacular. It can wait a few weeks. I need to go back to them and introduce myself as their new queen.” She wasn’t about to let them think she sent her husband in. If he behaved as he so often did, he wouldn’t be around much and it would be up to her to keep everyone in line. “Is that why you agreed to this arrangement? Because you wanted power?” “I agreed because I care about this country. I’ve spent the last ten years of my life working here and trying to ensure that our children get what they need to make it out in the world. I agreed because your mother is excellent at putting one in a corner. I agreed because someone has to and I wasn’t sure who you would bring home if given the chance.” She shuddered at the idea of some brainless model attempting to be a role model for Loa Malian girls. “Ah, you don’t think I have good taste in women.” “I think you have an unquenchable appetite for them, Your Majesty, and that is something we should talk about.” “Ah, the wifely lectures begin,” he said with a sigh. “Please proceed. I’m anxious to get this over with so I can be properly chastened.” “I only ask that you attempt some discretion, Kashmir. I don’t expect you to be faithful in any way, but I do expect you to not humiliate me.” He turned, frowning a bit as though she’d surprised him. “You don’t expect me to be faithful?” It was time for some honesty. “I don’t think you can be. How long have you kept a single woman? A month? Three?” “Six,” he replied. “I was with Tasha Reynolds for six months before we went our separate ways.” “And were you faithful to her?” She already knew the answer to that question. “We had an agreement.” He frowned as though the conversation wasn’t going at all as he’d expected. “She was on set much of the time. She knew I had a highly stressful job, so she was understanding. I gave her the same options.” “Excellent, then let’s be fair with each other. As long as we’re both discreet, this marriage of ours doesn’t have to mean the end of our lives.”

This is a super sweet book! This is Grady and Maya's story. Grady works with Crew (from Vines) and lives on the farm where they train government contract killers. He is going through a difficult time, recovering mentally and physically from a mission where he was kidnapped, beaten and severely injured. He is stubborn though, and refuses to get any help in healing. His only bright spot is watching the pretty new employee at the neighboring winery on her daily run down the paths between the two properties. Maya is new to Addy's winery. She is working there, living in a bungalow on the property, as well as working a second job as an activities director at a nursing home. Maya is not looking to make friends or settle down. She is hiding a big secret, on the run from her past, and doesn't want to draw attention to herself. But gradually, Addy and the other workers at the winery draw her in and she soon finds herself volunteering to help Grady, by using her past experience as a physical therapist, to help him recover from his injuries. He resists at first but eventually gives in. Maya and Grady get to know each other as they work together and find they really like each other. But when Maya's past comes back to threaten her future, Grady steps in to fight for her. They fall in love and are able to create a new life together.

I loved Grady and Maya together. Maya was sweet and funny. Grady was so awesome. The way he loved and adored Maya was so sweet. He was a bit prickly and grumpy at first, but once he gave in to his feelings for Maya, he was all in. They were really sexy and swoony together. The book was a bit slow burn, but it didn't bother me at all. It was original and not at all predictable. I loved the winery setting and catching up with Crew, Addy and the rest of the gang there. There is so much potential for more books in the series with Grady's hilarious sisters and the rest of Crew's men. I also liked the nursing home aspect. The elderly residents were really funny!

Overall, this was just a sweet and suspenseful, sexy and funny book! I really enjoyed seeing Maya and Grady's relationship develop. I look forward to more from Brynne Asher and this series in the future!

EXCERPT

“Ride with me.” The words flew out of Maverick’s mouth, and he didn’t want to take them back even though, fuck, it put him out there to be smacked down again. But damn if it wouldn’t be worth it to feel her holding him, pressed up tight against him, laughing in his ear.

Alexa hesitated and maybe even looked a little nervous, but Maverick could see the interest in the liveliness of her eyes.

“Don’t think. Just say yes,” he said.

Alexa tilted her head and narrowed her gaze at him, and then she smiled. “Okay. Yes.”

That’s my girl. He kept the sentiment to himself, but he felt it down deep. His Alexa was in there. The one who could throw caution to the wind and have fun doing absolutely nothing. The one who laughed freely and bantered relentlessly. Maverick gave a single nod.

“Let me tell Mom. Be right back,” she said.

“I’ll bring the bike around.” Maverick took a step backward, but then paused when Alexa turned and hurried toward the house. His gaze traced her curves and lingered on the bare skin of her thighs. Thighs that were going to be wrapped around him in just a few short minutes. Thighs that had been wrapped around him in all kinds of ways many times. Many times. Fuck.

A few houses down, Maverick straddled his Harley Night Rod Special and brought the engine to life on a low rumble. He pulled the bike to the curb in front of the Harmon house and waited. He didn’t have to wait long.

Alexa came flying out through the garage. She made eye contact with him and it fucking seared his blood. For some reason this ride felt weighted with a significance he couldn’t put into words. And he wasn’t trying. He was just going to enjoy the hell out of it. Because Maverick knew her agreeing this one time didn’t change anything. Not anything important.

By the time she reached him, Alexa was smiling even though he could tell she was trying to hold that shit back. But she couldn’t, and that got to him, too. For a moment, she hesitated, like she wasn’t sure what to do. No way that was it, though, because even though it had been years, she’d been in his saddle as many times as his bed. He suspected the real issue was giving herself permission to do what she was gonna have to do—get close and hold tight. To him.

Something she hadn’t done in years.

But then she did it.

This was a good book! This is Maverick and Alexa's second chance love story. Maverick is the VP of the Raven Riders MC. Alexa's brother was a member of the MC and Maverick's best friend. They dated and loved each other, but when Alexa's brother died in a motorcycle accident, she turned away from him and the club. Fearing that he would face a similar fate, Alexa broke up with Maverick. She threw herself into her education and business, making a "safe" life for herself . Now it is five years later, Alexa has moved on and is engaged to Grant. But things are not as they seem with her perfect life. Grant is abusive and Alexa runs to Maverick and the MC, who is known for helping abused women. Maverick wants to help Alexa and he knows he should never have let her go. He helps her get out and stay safe. Spending time together again makes them both realize that they never stopped loving each other and were never going to let each other go again.

I really liked both Maverick and Alexa. Maverick was so sweet and protective with her. He was a near perfect hero. Alexa was strong and sassy. She had been through a lot but learned from her past mistakes. Now that they are both more mature, they can see that they were always meant to be with each other. They were sexy and swoony together,

There is some suspenseful times when Grant isn't willing to let Alexa go without a fight. He makes trouble for her and the MC. But it all works out in the end. I enjoyed catching up with the rest of the MC. I think this was my favorite book in this series so far. There were some times when the book was a little slow moving and drawn out, but, overall, I very much enjoyed Maverick and Alexa's love story.

This is a very sweet, low relationship angst, suspenseful, emotional and sexy read! Ride Rough is a great addition to this series!
