New Release: Gifts by Brynne Asher + Review

Gifts
by Brynne Asher

About the book:

No one would say Keelie Lockhart isn’t determined.  Taking on the role of both mom and dad to her two young kids, she’s managing life the best she can.  Saddled with a century-old dilapidated farmhouse she can’t afford, a bevy of goats, two dogs, and a geriatric donkey, the last thing she has time for is a man—even if that man is a knight whose shining armor comes in the form of worn-in jeans and work boots.

Controlled, methodical, and focused—Asa Hollingsworth takes charge of everything in life.  Working close to home after years away, he finally has the time to focus on his kids.  Little does he know, a chance meeting with a petite, strawberry-blonde stranded on the side of the road, would intertwine their lives in a way he’d never want to untangle.

But when school bullies turn into something much worse, Asa starts to dig around.  He never dreams the troubles lurking in the hallways of the local high school would shake his family to its core.  With drug dealers lurking, bullets flying, and threats coming from every angle, Asa must do everything he can to protect the ones he loves.

Because in the end, there’s nothing more precious than the gift of life.

My review:

4 stars
****

This is a good book and a great addition to this series! This is Asa and Keelie's story. After a less than perfect marriage, Keelie is now a widow. A high school guidance counselor, she is living in a crumbling farmhouse in Virginia with her two kids, just trying to scrape up enough money to survive. She thinks she might be ready to date again, but a disastrous date ends with a flat tire. Asa is a single dad of two teenagers, divorced many years, who works with Grady and Crew. He happens along Keelie and her jerky date on the side of the road, no longer speaking, waiting for AAA to come change their tire. Asa changes their tire and sparks fly between him and Keelie. They gradually begin to see each other, but there is a lot they have to deal with along the way. There is a mystery and suspense with some happenings at the high school, which Asa's daughter gets wrapped up in. They have a lot to deal with and get over, including Keelie's hangups from her past, but everything works out for them as it should.

I liked both Asa and Keelie. Asa was pretty much perfect. He was protective, sexy and a great dad. Keelie is skeptical and unsure about starting a relationship, as well as trusting Asa and giving him her whole heart. She did annoy me at times when she pushed Asa away. It was understandable because of her past, but Asa did not deserve it and I felt bad for him. I liked them together when they were happy. I just wished there were a little bit more happy times to balance the pushing away times. I liked all of the kids. I felt like they well-written and age appropriate. The farm atmosphere and animals was cute and funny. The story was unique, interesting and the suspenseful. The writing is very good, as well. It was also fun catching up with the other couples in the series.

Overall, this book has it all! Sexiness, suspense, sweet and humorous times, and family moments. My favorite Brynne Asher book will remain Athica Lane, but I did really enjoy Gifts, as well as the rest of the Killers series!

About the author:

Brynne Asher lives in the Midwest with her husband, three children and her perfect dog. When she isn’t creating pretend people and relationships in her head, she's running her kids around and doing laundry. She enjoys decorating and shopping, and is always seeking the best deal. A perfect day in “Brynne World" ends in front of an outdoor fire with family, friends, s’mores, and a delicious cocktail.
