Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

MY REVIEW:

3.75-4 stars
****

This was a pretty good book but maybe not quite as good as the first book in the duet. This is the conclusion to Parker and Charlotte's story.

I did like this book, but I think it definitely lost something in being split into two books. I know there is a lot going on in both books so I don't know how they could have been combined. But I do know that if I had read both books back to back, as if they were one book, I would have enjoyed them more. Instead I read them a few weeks apart as they were released. The first book in the series has them meeting and falling in love. In book 2, the relationship momentum and the feeling of love is diminished, in my opinion. The second book was more about the drama unfolding and resolution of the cliffhanger of book one. I did like the story and the way everything worked out for Parker, Charlotte and their families. This was an emotional, dramatic book with lots of surprises and ups and downs. I did enjoy the book in general and was satisfied with the conclusion. I felt bad for everything that happened to the couple and their kids. I was glad everything worked out for them all and they got their HEA.

Overall, I definitely recommend reading this duet! I think the two books are best read back to back to get the best experience. All together, I do think this duet is the best work I've read by Aly Martinez. I loved seeing Parker and Charlotte's relationship develop and thrive in the face of adversity. The Darkest Sunrise duet is an original, emotional, sweet story with lots of feels!

AUTHOR INFORMATION:

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children. Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person. She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.
