New Release: Miss Fix-It by Emma Hart + Excerpt

One handywoman.

One single dad.

One set of twins.

And the wall isn’t the only thing being drilled…

I learned the hard way that being a handywoman isn’t easy. The questions, the stares—the assumption I’m the proud owner of a cock and balls. Not that it matters. I’ve proven over and over that I’m ready for anything the judgmental asses throw at me.

Except the hot, single dad of twins who just moved to town.

Brantley Cooper gets the shock of his life when I show up on his doorstep to fix up his kids’ new rooms. His son is confused why ‘the pretty lady has a drill,’ and his daughter has a new obsession—me.

On paper, my job is easy. Go in, do their bedrooms, and leave.

In theory, I’m spending eight hours a day with a guarded, sexy as hell guy, and I’m staying for dinner more often than I’m eating it alone, on my couch, with Friends re-runs.

I shouldn’t be staying for dinner. I shouldn’t be helping him out with the twins. I shouldn’t be falling in love with tiny toes and dimpled cheeks.

And I most definitely should not be kissing my client.

Oops…

EXCERPT:

“I swear, messing with me is your new favorite hobby.” “It is,” he admitted, eyes sparkling. “You’re so easy to mess with, I don’t even have to try.” I rolled my eyes. “And to think—I let myself be guilt-tripped into this.” “More fool you. I warned you about her, and you obviously didn’t listen.” “That’s so not fair. I did listen, I just don’t have freaky skills to avoid the guilt like you do.” “I don’t avoid the guilt. I pretend.” “Would you have pretended if you were me, knowing you’d leave a poor guy to be lonely?” He raised his eyebrows. “I wouldn’t have been lonely. I’d have watched TV with my pants off.” “You don’t get to use my plans as an excuse,” I scoffed. “And unless your daughter is a master manipulator, you would have been lonely.” “She’s four. All four-year-olds are master manipulators. If kids came with manuals, that would be the title of the chapter that talks about age four,” he said. “There are technically manuals. They’re these wonderful, futuristic things called books.” “None of which are geared toward a single dad,” he pointed out. “The last time I Googled something, I diagnosed Eli with a rare, deadly disease, learned that there are way too many styles of braid for any human being to master, and also found out how to get the kids out of the door by eight and have time to do my make-up.” I paused. “I can see how that last one would be of use to you. Your mascara looks wonderful today.”

EXCERPT:

“Hey, Cora,” he said, his gravelly morning voice so damn sexy. “Hey,” she said, tilting her head back to look him in the eye. She wondered if she should get off him, but didn’t really want to. Not making any move to get up, Slider just looked down at her. “How you feeling?” “A lot better,” she said, hyperaware that her hand was lying on his chest. His heartbeat faintly registered against her palm. “Still achy and a little off, but better.” “Good. You should probably take it easy today, though. Whatever that was isn’t likely out of your system yet.” She nodded. “I will.” Talking like this, their faces so close, felt so damn intimate that Cora could almost imagine that nothing existed outside of Slider’s bed. She almost didn’t want it to. Especially when his arm squeezed a little tighter around her shoulders and brought them just a little closer. Cora shifted into his embrace, pressing her chest totally flush against his die, and sliding her thigh up until— Oh, hell. Until she felt the part of him she’d accidentally seen. And it was hard. He sucked in a breath, and his hand clamped around his thigh. “Shit, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—” She placed her fingers loosely over his mouth. She didn’t want him to apologize. Or explain it away. Or push her away. Cora knew she shouldn’t wan the things she did, but that didn’t make her desires go away. It felt good to want Slider, it made her feel normal, even if she was a little nervous. After what her father had done, that seemed like a victory she didn’t want to relinquish. And, oh, now that she was touching his face, she really didn’t want to stop. His lips were full and soft under her fingers, his stubble was more ticklish than prickly, and his cheekbone was prominent under his skin. He licked his lips, and her gaze latched on to the movement. “Cora,” he rasped, his cock getting even harder against her thigh. His arousal fueled her own, her hips tilting with the need for friction. The movement had her grinding herself against the firm muscle of his thigh and made both of them suck in a breath. His grip tightened on her everywhere. His arm holding her tighter yet to him, his hand pulling her thigh wider across him. Her fingers returned to his mouth again, and traced across his lower lip. His tongue flicked out and swiped at her pointer finger, and Cora was instantly wet. Trembling with need and adrenaline and the fear that at any second, he would cut this off, Cora shifted ever so slowly, ever so slightly, bringing her face closer to his. He watched her like she was a tigress about to strike, but just as her mouth almost reached his, he flipped them and pinned her to the bed. And Cora realized she had it all wrong. He’d been the feral animal about to attack all along.

MY REVIEW:

4-4.25 stars
****

Aww, this was a really good and sweet book! This is Cora and Slider's story. Cora, along with her friend Haven, ran away from a bad situation with her now-deceased father and has been staying with the Raven Riders. Their MC helps women running from dangerous and abusive situations get back on their feet. Haven is now in a relationship with the MC's president, leaving Cora a little lonely and unsure of what steps to take in the future. Slider is a member of the MC and a widower, whose wife died a few years ago of cancer. He is having a very hard time coping and raising his two young sons. So Cora volunteers to help him by babysitting for the boys. They fall in love with her and she quickly becomes a part of their family. Cora and Slider feel an attraction to each other and finally act on that attracting, falling in love. There is some ongoing drama from some people that have it out for the Raven Riders, threatening Cora and Slider's new found happiness. But after some suspenseful times, it all works out in the end.

I think this was my favorite book in the series. I was weary at first because sometimes the "dead wife" trope doesn't work for me. It was obvious from the beginning of the book that Slider was not still hung up on his wife. There was a lot from his past that no one knew and he hadn't had the perfect marriage everyone thought he had. I really liked him and was so happy he got to find real, true love with Cora. Now, Cora. I loved Cora! She was a breath of fresh air. Always positive and trying to help others. She was the perfect person for Slider and his two boys. She brought the Evans family back to life. Cora had secrets from her past that she had told no one. Being with Slider helped her heal from the trauma she had endured. I loved Cora and Slider's slow burn relationship and seeing them fall in love. Slider's sons were really cute, well-written and age appropriate. It was great seeing them all come together as a family and heal from their pasts.

Overall, this was a really good, sweet book! I enjoyed watching Cora and Slider's relationship develop and seeing them get there very much deserved happily ever after! I look forward to more from the Raven Riders series and Laura Kaye!

MY REVIEW:

3.5- 4 stars! This is another great addition to 1,001 Dark Nights series! I love these anthologies and have found some great new authors in them!

About 1001 Dark Nights: Bundle Twelve: From New York Times and USA Today bestselling authors Alexandra Ivy, Laura Wright, Lorelei James, Lara Adrian, and introducing Nazarea Andrews and Megan Erickson. Six Dark Tales. Six Sensual Stories. Six Page Turners.

Kayden by Alexandra Ivy- 3.5-4 stars. This was a really good, quick read!  I really liked Becca and Kayden. I wanted to see them actually shift and be with their pack. It was a little abrupt in the ending. This was my first read by this author and in this series, but I definitely want to read more!  Very interesting and different take on shifters! Puma shifters at that!

Simon by Laura Wright- 3.5-4 stars. Also really good! I liked Simon and Tryst. They were really hot together! I still thought the ending was abrupt, but I definitely want to read more from this series.

Strung Up by Lorelei James- 4 stars. This was a good read. M/M is not my thing. It just doesn't ring my bell, so to speak. But I still enjoyed this book for the interesting story. I definitely felt the connection between Cres and Breck. I like the story. I liked the western/rodeo setting.
The writing was good. It was a good length with lots of depth to the characters. I definitely want to read more of this series too.

Midnight Untamed by Lara Adrian- 3.5 stars. This was a good little short story. I liked the world that was built.  This story was a bit OTT sweet, but still I enjoyed it. There is some insta-love, suspense, sweet and sexy times. All good stuff. This was my first read by this author and and I definitely want to read more from this series.

Dirty Sexy Secrets by Nazarea Andrews- 3.25-3.5 stars. This was a pretty good read. This felt like a full length novel and I did like that. There were parts of this I liked and parts I didn't. I liked the story. It was interesting, different and fast paced. I wasn't sure about the writing style at first. It was so fast paced that I felt like I might be missing something but I got used to it after a bit. I liked Hazel and Archer. I definitely felt their connection. There was a good bit of suspense, some family drama, good friends, a bit of a taboo relationships, humor and love. It did feel a little overly dramatic and high school drama at times. Archer was a manwhore and it is brought up often with no mention of Hazel's partners/past. There is a lot of mentioned of secrets from the past that we're left to just wonder about for much of the book. I hated Hazel's nickname, Hazy Eyes. And the words "Green County"  is mentioned about 50 times. There were small annoyances like that. But overall, I was definitely entertained and wanted to find out what happened in the end. I did need a bit more resolution and an epilogue would have been awesome to see how the couple's future turned out. There were a few plot holes and things that happened that were never fully explained. Still, I did enjoy this book overall and I would definitely try this author again in the future.

Bite the Hand that Bleeds by Megan Erickson- 3.5 stars. Sexy little short story. Roxy is a poor young woman supporting her teenage brother. She heads to Bite, a Vampire club, with her friend to donate blood for money. Sparks fly when she meets Dru, who is head of the club's security. This prequel was pretty different than Blood Guard, book 1 in the series. It is much sexier and less YA feeling. Looking forward to more from this series!

Overall, I enjoyed all the stories in this bundle! I definitely recommend this series. It is packed full of great novellas and stories I have loved!

About the 1001 Dark Nights: Bundle Twelve Authors-

Alexandra Ivy is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Alexandra: “I’m not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother’s knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on. Years later (no, I’m not admitting how many) I’m still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold! I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.

Laura Wright is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. From Laura: “Unlike many of my peers in the writing world, I wasn’t a writer or a reader until I left high school. During my youth I was into theater, song and dance, commercials and boys. I loved romance surely, but I had never read a romance novel until my late teens. With that said, I remember the day I did like it was a moment ago – my aunt gave me the Jude Deveraux novel, Knight in Shining Armor and I couldn’t put it down until the very last word. Then I went straight to the library and got another – then another until I’d read everything she’d ever written. After that, it was McNaught, Howard, Schone, Kleypas, and the Silhouette line, Desire. I instantly loved those emotional, sexy reads, so much so that I began to carve out ideas for my own stories, themes that were unique to me and moved me. In 1997 I enrolled in UCLA extension writing classes, met my mentor and critique partners and since have never stopped writing. I was committed then and I still am now; the need to tell my own romantic stories a full on obsession. My first manuscript was rejected, and though the second one was as well the editor who’d rejected it wanted to see something else from me. I had something (note to authors; always keep working, even after you’ve sent in a proposal) and sent it right away. The day I got the call telling me Desire wanted to buy Cinderella and the Playboy was the best day of my life. That is until I married my husband, and had my two beautiful children. But I must say, writing is much like motherhood – tough, grueling, surprising, delicious and for me, a dream come true.”

Lorelei James is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author of contemporary erotic western romances set in the modern day Wild West and also contemporary erotic romances. Lorelei’s books have been nominated for and won the Romantic Times Reviewer’s choice Award, as well as the CAPA Award. Lorelei lives in western South Dakota with her family…and a whole closet full of cow girl boots. From Lorelei: “Why do I have a particular fondness for all things western? Well, I’m a fourth generation South Dakotan, living in the Black Hills, which is chock-full of interesting characters, including cowboys, Indians, ranchers, and bikers. The geographical diversity of the surrounding area showcases mountains, plains, and badlands. Living in and writing about rural settings gives me a unique perspective, especially since I’m not writing historical westerns. Through my fictional world, I can show the ideals and the cowboy way of life are still very much alive.”

Lara Adrian is the New York Times, USA Today and #1 internationally bestselling author of the Midnight Breed vampire romance series and seven award-winning, historical romances, previously released under the pen name Tina St. John. Lara’s Midnight Breed series is available in hardcover, mass market paperback and e-book through Random House, and in limited edition through Doubleday Book Club, Rhapsody Book Club, Book of The Month, and the Science Fiction Book Club. Unabridged audio editions are available through Tantor Media, Random House Audio, Amazon, iTunes, etc. Lara’s new releases regularly appear on all of the key bestseller lists including including the New York Times, USA Today, Publishers Weekly, Indiebound, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, etc. There are more than 2 million copies of the Midnight Breed novels in print in the United States.

Nazarea Andrews (N to almost everyone) is an avid reader and tends to write the stories she wants to read. Which means she writes everything from zombies and dystopia to contemporary love stories. When not writing, she can most often be found driving her kids to practice and burning dinner while she reads, or binge watching TV shows on Netflix. N loves chocolate, wine, and coffee almost as much as she loves books, but not quite as much as she loves her kids. Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. Although rather fun-sized, she's been told she has a full-sized personality. EXCERPT:

“Here we are.”
My face heats over being caught even imagining such things. We’re at my door and I have no recollection of entering the motel. Come on, Teresa. Stop letting this guy get to you so bad. “Right.” I fish for the key card in my pocket, but cease all movement when Will brushes his fingertips down my arm, then trails them back up. Slow. And all the while, he invades my space, eliminating inches at such a leisurely pace that I’m panting by the time our mouths are a breath apart.
“What are you going to do when I close this door behind you, Teresa?” He grazes my bottom lip with his teeth, making me gasp. “You going to get undressed in front of the air conditioner, thinking it might cool you down after teasing my cock for over an hour in the bar? It won’t. I give you five minutes before you’re face down in bed, riding your own fingers.”
My knees threaten to buckle. “That’s my business.”
“Make it mine.”
Mayday. Mayday. “Will—”
He stops my admonishment with a drugging kiss, his tongue stroking in and out of my mouth. His hands grip my elbows, lifting me up on my toes in desperate degrees, meshing our bodies, our lips, until I’m moaning, letting him have rough intercourse with my mouth. Just when I’m on the verge of giving in and begging him to take me up against the door, he steps back, eyes glittering, wiping away the moisture on his mouth with a wrist swipe. “I’ll be out on the balcony. If you’re going to finger yourself in my honor, I want to listen.”

MY REVIEW:

4.5 stars
****

This was a really good book! This is Teresa and Will's book. Teresa's younger brother is forced to work for a mafia crimeboss. In order to save his life and help get him out of the mess he has gotten himself into, Teresa agrees to do a job for the boss. Will is the boss's son. He is on a roadtrip around the country with his dog. The dog is dying and Will wants to make his last days happy. The boss wants Will to stop his roadtrip and come back to NY. So he sends Teresa to "run into" Will and convince him to come back to NY (but she can't tell him his dad sent her). Teresa is willing to do anything to save her brother, but she doesn't count on the instant connection she finds with Will. She joins Will on his roadtrip and falls in love with him and his dog. Can she convince him to go back to NY and save her brother? And will he ever forgive her when he finds out she lied to him?

Tessa Bailey is a master at writing chemistry between characters! Her chemistry beats 99% of the other books I read. I just love her work and she is fast becoming a favorite of mine. This book is her first indie book and it is just as good, if not better, than her other books. I loved Will and Teresa. They were both amazing, complicated characters. And holy hotness! There was perfect together with scorching chemistry and connection. They waited awhile after they met to actually sleep together, but they got very creative in the meantime. I had one little niggle- that being that Teresa, raised in Staten Island, NY, was able to pass herself off as being from California. I just wondered if she didn't have an accent to give her away! But that didn't bother me too much. There was just so much good going on in this book- road trip adventures, an adorable dog, fun, sexy times and an awesome couple falling in love. There's a little suspense and some family drama too.

Overall, this book is gold. Every book I read by Tessa Bailey gets better and better. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next!

About the author:

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of ten years and six-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Then I see Gabriel McKellan. He’s Fate’s most famous son, a bestselling author who is beautiful, complicated, and living just below me. In addition to his plus-sized brain, Gabe’s well-endowed in other ways, and great in bed to boot. I would know. He's my ex husband.
When I suggest The Plan, I don't imagine that he'll take the bait. It's been ten years, and we don't work. But Fate has other plans for both of us.

EXCERPT

I climb inside the U-Haul and grab two small things first: my favorite Elvis lamp and a box of yarn and clay, easy pickings for my first trip up the stairs to my rented digs. Then I grab my purse off the truck’s rear ledge, step down, and—
“Oofh!”
I blink at the wall I’ve just slammed into, and there he is. At first, I think I’m seeing things. I blink a few times, fast, to try to magic him away. Hallucination. But…he’s not.
His curly hair is wild and dark, just like it always was. His blue-gray eyes—more blue, although he claims they’re gray—are just as sharp as I recall. His face is still so striking: dark brows over a stern, strong nose, and high cheekbones. My gaze skates over his rich mouth, and I realize I’d forgotten how handsome he is.
Gabriel McKellan is famous at least in part because he looks like such a god. The familiarity of him hits me like a ball of ice right to the gut, but where he’s different makes me warm. That stubble-beard, the way his jaw is sharper, shoulders thicker. My gaze skates down his white t-shirt, pasted over rigid abs. I note his forearms—thicker, tanned—before appraising jeans-clad thighs.
One flexes.
Shit.
My errant gaze jerks back up, where I find his features twisted in a scowl.
“What are you doing?” he asks roughly.
I blink. “What?”
Gabe’s brows pinch together, and he glares behind me, at the truck. “What are you doing here, Marley?”
I look around the quiet, leaf-strewn street, trying to explain not what I’m doing, but why I’m seeing him here. Nothing looks amiss, though. Nothing to suggest I’ve had a mental break.
“I’m moving back to Fate. Today,” I add, my voice a squeak above its normal octave.
Gabe’s foot taps the curb between us. Even barefoot, he’s a domineering prick. I inhale slowly, bringing my heart-rate down a notch, so I seem more gathered when I ask, “Where are your shoes?”
“Why did you park here,” he demands again.
“Because I’m moving in?” It’s not a question, but it sounds like one. I bug my eyes out in response to his mean stare. “What are you doing here—and where are your shoes?”
“My shoes are inside.”
I blink at the porch behind him. “Inside where?”
“Inside the house behind me.”
“What?”
Gabe’s head is still shaking, his jaw locked like an angry sentry.
“What the hell is this about?” My heart begins to pound. “Are you my greeting party?”
“I’m your warning party,” he says quietly.
“Warning me from what?”
“I live here, Marley. On the bottom floor.”
“But…you’re—”
“I’m living here.” His face hardens. “I think that means you need to close your truck and go.”
Is he insane? My head spins. Gabe can’t be… “You can’t live here,” I sputter. “You live in New York!”
For an instant, I feel sure this is a joke: a TV joke. Famous author/director shocks unknown ex-wife by popping up at her new place.
“Is there a hidden camera?” I ask lamely.
“No, Marley. There’s not. There’s just a house—with room for one.”
“Yeah…me.”
His lush mouth tightens. “I don’t think so.”
I laugh. “Oh—you watch.”

Review: Juniper Unraveling by Keri Lake

Juniper Unraveling
by Keri Lake

Release date: October 31, 2017

About the book:

Papa says everyone has a story that deserves to be told.

Most begin years ago, after the second bomb hit, unearthing a deadly contagion that divided the population into the pure, the infected, and the Ragers.

Many recount the moment we rose up from the ashes and started anew.

Others tell of the day we built a wall to keep them out.

For some, they’re nothing more than the vestiges left behind—a simple name carved into the knotty bark of a Juniper tree.

My story begins with a boy. A mute, from the other side of the wall, known only as Six, who touched my heart in ways that words never could, and gave me the courage to face my darkest truth.

My Review:

2.5 stars
**

This book was not very good for me. This is a dystopian book that takes place sometime in the future after a deadly disease was unleashed on the country, causing those exposed to be turned into zombie-like creatures called Ragers. The story is told in two parts, with the first half of the book in alternating POVs of two teenage girls. We don't know who the hero and heroine of the story are until much later in the book. I can't really give away very much of the story beyond that without spoiling it.

I really struggled to like this book. It took me a long time to get into it. Over half of the book was very slow moving and I considering DNFing multiple times. The first part of the book was slow moving and, because it was told in the POV of teenagers, it felt very YA. The second half was faster paced and more exciting. I wish that it had all been told in the present. The story in the book had potential, but I felt like there were many plot holes. I felt like the book had parts of many different other dystopian novels. There is a man named after a number (Hello Four from Divergent), haves and have-nots (I'm looking at you the Capital in Hunger Games), etc. There were a lot of cliches and cheap gimmicks. I didn't particularly like any of the characters or feel a connection between them. The romance did not grab me at all, especially because one of the characters did not speak for much of the book.  I didn't feel any of the emotions that the characters were feeling. So much of the book was depressing, grizzly and gory. There was no resolution in sight until the very end of the book when everything was wrapped up quickly and a little too nicely.

Overall, this book was not really what I was expecting and I was disappointed. I am probably in the minority though as other reviewers have enjoyed it. So if you like dystopian books, try this one and decide for yourself!
