Review: Little Black Dress by Sarah Curtis, Brynne Asher, Layla Frost and Sarah O'Rourke + Giveaway!

4 stars

This is a good little anthology! This anthology includes 4 stories each by a different author including a little black dress. It is like the Sisterhood of the Traveling Black Dress, which I thought was a really cute and unique idea for connecting the stories!

Abby's Angel's by Sarah O' Rourke - In the first story, Abby has been going through a rough spot with her husband. She has undergone infertility, miscarriages, and a failed adoption. She and her husband have grown apart because of those tragedies. Abby has tried to get him to go to counseling, but he has blown it off. She is heartbroken and feels like her marriage might be over. Her sister, Lucy, convinces her to try one last time to seduce, and then confront her husband. She decides to wear her little black dress that she wore on their first date. They are able to work things out between them and end up with a bright, happy future.

This was a heartbreaking story to start off the anthology with. I felt really bad for Abby and I shed a few tears for her. I did not love that her husband was keeping a big secret from her. She took it all in stride, but, if I were her, I would have been mad! I did like the way everything turned out for them though. They were really sweet together.

Lucy's A Dreamer by Brynne Asher - Lucy is Abby's sister. She borrows Abby's LBD to wear to their brother's rehearsal dinner for his wedding. There, she runs into Vaughn. He is her brother's best friend who she always crushed on growing up. The sparks fly between them and they spend a hot night together. But come morning, Lucy is afraid that Vaughn only wants a one night stand so she runs. The day of the wedding, throughout the festivities, Vaughn chases Lucy and tries to corner her so he can get her alone and make his intentions known.

Lucy and Vaughn were hot and sweet together. She had always dreamed of him and compared all other men to him, so she was happy to have her dreams come true. And Vaughn says "I'm glad I never knew to dream of you, Lucy. I'm not sure I could have waited, that pain might have been too much for me. Just so you know, you're the best thing I never knew to dream." Swoon!

Kiss Me, Katie by Sarah Curtis - Katie is Lucy's high school friend. She is a police officer and a tomboy. Her parents are constantly trying to try to set her up on blind dates and harping on marriage and babies. Katie decides to get her parents off her back for a bit, by pretending she has a boyfriend. She approaches her partner, Officer Ethan Pierce, who she is very close to. So close, that she's secretly in love with him. Ethan jumps at the chance to play her boyfriend at Sunday family dinner, because he's secretly in love with her too! So Katie borrow's the LBD from Lucy and it works it's magic for the couple. They play a couple so convincingly that they believe it themselves.

Katie was super sweet. Ethan was hot and he knew to take the risk on letting her know his feelings for her. They were a really cute couple!

Winnie Mae by Layla Frost - Winnie is Katie's friend and neighbor. She is a cartoon artist. She is quirky and tattoed. Winnie draws herself in her cartoons and writes funny scenes about her life. She agrees to go with her roommate, Emma, to her work Christmas party. Winnie is not the "corporate" type, so she borrows Katie's LBD to wear to the party. She covers her tattoos with a wrap and puts her hair up so she looks more conservative. Winnie meets, and has immediate chemistry, with Max at the party. She decides to goof around and makes up stories to tell him about being a big shot executive in "mergers and aquisitions" (which she has no idea what that is). She thinks it doesn't matter because she won't see these people again. Winnie and Max do decide to leave together, though, and have a hot night together. But Winnie runs out in the morning before Max wakes up. But Max isn't letting her go that easily. They end up texting all the time, which leads to them talking on the phone, and finally they get together again. Both want more from each other, but first Winnie has to come clean about her lies!

This story was my favorite! Winnie was such a fun, cool character. An artist, snarky free spirit, I just loved her. She and Max had immediate chemistry and great banter. Max saw through her lies to see who she really was right away. They just clicked and fit together so well. I wanted more from these two!

I was excited to read this anthology by some of my favorite authors. It was a great collection of short stories. Overall, they were fun, sweet and sexy! Reading it left me with a warm happy feeling! Proceeds from this anthology will be donated to Gilda’s Club, which offers support to those living with cancer, too!

BLURB:
Guy Rule: It's only stalking if you get caught.

Rhys Campbell doesn’t believe in love at first sight, until he sees Macy Holland in a coffee shop and finds himself stalking her across town… to a sex toy shop.
Macy isn’t sure what to think about Rhys, except that he’s sexy as sin in his custom suits and even hotter out of them with all his tatted up muscles. The sassy virgin finds herself quickly falling into his bed, but little does she know he’s playing for keeps.

Warning: If sexy heroes with tattoos and piercings make you want to bite your lip and do dirty things...read on.

REVIEW

This was a quick, sweet and sexy read! This is Rhys and Macy's story. Rhys sees Macy in a crowded coffee shop and is immediately smitten. He follows her and finds she works at a sex-toy shop. But he soon finds that Macy is not the sex toy shop type and that she is really a virginal aspiring writer. Rhys is totally OTT in insta-love with Macy and he swoops her off her feet. And of course, he wants babies with her ASAP. I liked this book, but maybe not as much as a few others in this series. There wasn't much to the story other than them meeting and falling in love. Still, this was an enjoyable, easy read and definitely worth reading!

EXCERPT
After getting ready for bed— wearing pajama pants I had to dig out of the back of my closet since I usually slept naked—I decided to look in on her and make sure she was comfortable and had everything she needed.
I knocked on the closed door and waited, then tried again. When I still heard nothing I assumed she was asleep, but a small part of me was worried that she might have slipped and fallen in the bath or been a victim of some other calamity. Flimsy excuse.
Quietly, I turned the knob on the door and pushed it open. Her light was still on and a hasty glance at her bed showed it was empty. “Macy?” I called, walking fully into the room. The bathroom light was on and the door was wide open, so I padded over to it. Just as I reached the entrance, I froze in mid-stride. Every nerve in my body coiled tight, unable to move. Except my cock which was rapidly growing and hardening.
Macy was just slipping my shirt over her head and before it fell, I got a glimpse of all that was underneath. High, rounded breasts that would fit so well in my hands, pink nipples that made my mouth water. A slender torso, nipped in waist, and a belly button that had my tongue itching to lick around it. Her hips flared out just enough to be perfect for a tight grip while she was thoroughly fucked from behind. Toned, sexy legs, and my jaw practically dropped to the ground at the sight of her smooth, bare pussy.
Son of a fucking bitch! I mentally screamed at the fucking garment that was hiding all that perfection.

  EXCERPT

His hand caught her, long fingers wrapping around her elbow and causing all sorts of unwelcome sensations as he pulled her back around. “What?” she asked. “Waiting for my apology.” “Sure,” she said agreeably. “When hell freezes over.” She lifted her chin, grateful for her four-inch heels so that she could almost, kind of, not quite look him in the eyes. “I’m in charge of this building, Archer, which means I’m in charge of everything that happens in it. I’m also in charge of everyone who works for this building.” He cocked his head, looking amused again. “You want to be the boss of me, Elle?” he asked softly. I am the boss of you.” Now he outright smiled and her breath caught. Damn, stupid, sexy smile. And then there was The Body. Yes, she thought of it in capital letters, it deserved the respect. “If you don’t want to be walking funny tomorrow,” she said, “you’ll stop invading my personal-space bubble.” Complete bravado and they both knew it. She’d only been at this job for a year and it’d come as a surprise to her that he’d been in the building at all. An unfortunate coincidence. Before that it’d been years since they’d had any contact, but she still knew enough to get that no one got the better of him. He was quick, light on his feet, and physically strong. But that wasn’t what made him so dangerous to her. No, it was his sharp intelligence, his quick wit, how he was willing to go as dark as he needed to in order to do what he thought was right. And then there was the biggie—the way he had of making her feel shockingly alive. He did as she asked and stepped back but not before pausing to make sure they both knew who was in control here, and it most definitely wasn’t her. No one did intimidation like Archer, and in his line of work he could be in a coma and still intimidate everyone in the room. He had muscles on top of muscles but didn’t look beefed up like a body builder might. Instead his body seemed lean and seriously badass, with caramel skin that strayed from light to golden to mocha latte depending on what the season was, giving him a look of indeterminable origin. And sexiness. It worked for him, allowing him to fit in to just about any situation. Handy on the job, she imagined. But with her he was careful. Distant. And yet she’d seen the way he sometimes looked at her, and on the rare occasion when he’d touched her, like when he guided her through a door with his hand low on her back, he let himself linger. There was always a shocking and baffling yearning beyond both the glances and the touches. That, or it was all just wishful thinking. Not that it mattered since he still held back with her. The problem was she yearned too. Yearned for him to see her as a woman, strong and capable enough to stand at his side. But after what they’d been through, she knew that would never happen. She turned away, annoyed by how her entire body had gone on high alert as always, every inch of her seeming to hum beneath the surface. She should have just emailed him.

It’s a romantic getaway for the newlyweds. Or is it? Parker Black’s brilliant computer skills keep Titan Group running, but now he’s getting some much needed downtime. Cut off from his own security team and facing a ticking clock, Parker’s about to realize there’s no such thing as downtime when you work for Titan.

About the Author:
Karyn Lawrence has been a screenwriter for more than fifteen years, with rather mild success, and grew tired of her stories only reaching a handful of readers. The decision was made to try fiction in early 2013 and once she figured out how to write internal dialogue again, the prose came fast and furious. She most enjoys writing smexy (smart-sexy) books featuring a lovable SOB.
She also writes as USA Today bestselling author Nikki Sloane, who has been a Goodreads Choice Best Debut semi-finalist and a Romance Writers of America RITA© finalist. Karyn is a Chicago native who lives in Kentucky with her epic husband and two adorable sons.

My review:

I got to read this one last week and I really enjoyed it! This was a good, quick, romantic suspense read! I read this because it was written by Karyn Lawrence, who is the alter ego, of one of my favorite writers, Nikki Sloane. I had not read any of the other books in the Titan series before, but I definitely will now. This book focuses on newlyweds, Parker and Lexi. They are both white hat hackers and work for Titan security. The couple goes undercover for a mission at a resort in West Virginia. This little novella packs a punch of suspense and some really sexy times. I wanted more from Parker and Lexi. Romantic suspense books are sometimes too heavy on the suspense for my personal taste, but that was not the case in this book. There was lots of sizzle; they are newlyweds, after all. I will definitely be going back to the beginning of this series to see how Parker and Lexi got together, as well as the rest of the Titan crew!

Review: Professed by Nicola Rendell

Professed

4.25 stars

I loved this book! This is the third book I've read by Ms. Rendell and all have been major hits for me. This is Naomi and Ben's story. Naomi is a Junior philosophy major at Yale. She is invited to a masked party one night where she meets Ben. It is definitely lust and connection at first sight. They spend the night together and both know they want to see each other again, but a phone number mix up prevents it. That is, until Naomi meets the new headmaster of philosophy, Professor Ben Beck. Both are horrified to find that they are Professor and student and vow to not be together again. But they just can't help themselves. They have both formed a strong connection to each other, like nothing they've ever felt before. They try to stay apart, but both are miserable. So they begin sneaking around, despite suspicion from the crotchety dean, who threatens their careers. There is some push and pull and they both have to decide if they are willing to risk it all to be together. But it all works out in the end because they are soul mates and meant to be.

I love Naomi and Ben. They are both great characters. Ben is so adorably clueless at times. He is of the nihilist philosophy and never really believed in love. He was knocked off his feet when he met Naomi, utterly smitten from the very beginning. He adores her, worships her really. I loved the way he loved her. Ben is 38 and Naomi is 20, but he comes off as more like 28. He does not have experience with relationships and leads a kind of lonely life as a solitary professor. Naomi was just what he needed, a breath of fresh air. She doesn't come off as much younger than him either. To me, they were the same maturity. Naomi was smart, but funny and strong. They had amazing chemistry too. Neither Ben or Naomi feel like they fit into the academic world. They both feel like outsiders, Naomi, because of she grew up the child of a poor lobsterman, and Ben, because he doesn't feel qualified to be a Yale professor. But they found that they fit with each other perfectly. There is a very "Romeo and Juliet" feel to this book. Naomi and Ben felt like star-crossed lovers at times. They met and connected before they knew who each other really were and by the time they found out, it was too late because their feelings were too deep. They both fought it at times, because they both had so much to lose if they were found out, but it was impossible for them to stay apart. It was romantic and swoon-worthy the way they felt about each other and the way they found ways to communicate (hidden letters, etc.). I liked the way that philosophy was woven into the story, as well as the C.S. Elliot quotes too. I just fell in love with Ben and Naomi and the way they fall in love with each other.

While I loved this book, I felt the end was a little rushed. I needed more resolution after the main conflict. There was no discussion on the page when they made up and I needed that. There is an epilogue but it's really short and I needed more details. There is a HFN with no major commitments. I would have rated this one a 4.5 stars if it were not for the lack of closure. But I do imagine them living happily ever after because of the way they love each other, so it's ok.

But, despite all that, I did love this book because of the strong feelings it provoked from me. It's not perfect, but it made me feel everything Ben and Naomi felt. I love Nicola Rendell's writing. I just connect so much to her stories in a rare way. I love her characters and the chemistry and connection she creates between them. I have loved all 3 of her books and I can't wait for more!

Review: With Us by Layla Frost

With Us

4 -4.25 stars

This was a good book! This is Theo and Dahlia's story. Theo, a rich businessman, meets Dahlia in the coffee shop she works at. He is interested in her right away and asks her out. Dahlia has a lonely life, working two jobs, a sad past and very little romantic experience. She feels like Theo is out of her league, but agrees to take a chance with him. Theo is smitten and he coaxes the gun-shy Dahlia into letting down her guard and dating him. They begin a relationship and fall in love. But Theo is hiding a secret and it all comes to a head for him, putting their relationship and future in danger. Dahlia feels betrayed when she finds out Theo's secret, but after she works through it, is able to finally forgive him. They are able to work everything out so they can have a happy future together.

I really liked Theo and Dahlia. Their romance started a little slow burn. Dahlia grew up in foster care and that made her reluctant to let her self get close to people because she always felt disposable. She has lead a lonely life, but didn't realize until she met Theo and was brought into his big, Italian family. Theo was swoon-worthy. He knew a good thing in Dahlia and he was willing to put in the time and patience he needed to show her that he was in her life for good. She begins to blossom under his love and with his family. I definitely felt the couple's connection. The book is broken into two parts. The first half is when Theo and Dahlia meet and begin a relationship, eventually falling in love. Then there is a big twist and the second half is a little more drama filled. I liked both parts and I liked the way the story played out. Theo and Dahlia weathered a storm together, coming out as a strong unit in the end. I liked the the book was long enough for them to come together and work through all kinks in their relationship so I felt secure in their HEA. I liked the world built in the book and the side characters in Theo's family. I would love to see more from them in future books.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I will definitely re-read this book in the future and I look forward to more from Ms. Frost!
