New Release: Wreck the Halls by Tessa Bailey + Review!

Wreck the Halls by Tessa Bailey is now available!
This book was so good, definitely going on my favorites list for 2023!

Blurb:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Tessa Bailey delivers a sexy, hilarious standalone holiday rom-com about the adult children of two former rock stars who team up to convince their mothers to play a Christmas Eve concert...

Melody Gallard may be the daughter of music royalty, but her world is far from glamorous. She spends her days restoring old books and avoiding the limelight (one awkward tabloid photo was enough, thanks). But when a producer offers her a lot of money to reunite her mother's band on live tv, Mel begins to wonder if it's time to rattle the cage, shake up her quiet life... and see him again. The only other person who could wrangle the rock and roll divas.

Beat Dawkins, the lead singer's son, is Melody's opposite--the camera loves him, he could charm the pants off anyone, and his mom is not a potential cult leader. Still, they might have been best friends if not for the legendary feud that broke up the band. When they met as teenagers, Mel felt an instant spark, but it's nothing compared to the wild, intense attraction that builds as they embark on a madcap mission to convince their mothers to perform one last show.

While dealing with rock star shenanigans, a 24-hour film crew, brawling Santas, and mobs of adoring fans, Mel starts to step out of her comfort zone. With Beat by her side, cheering her on, she's never felt so understood. But Christmas Eve is fast approaching, and a decades-old scandal is poised to wreck everything--the Steel Birds reunion, their relationships with their mothers, and their newfound love.

4.25-4.5 stars

This was so good! In the past few years, Tessa Bailey's books have been more miss than hit for me. But this one hit it out of the park. Wreck the Halls has a magical, soulmates quality that my meager review can't properly describe.

Do not judge the book by this cover!! It is not a cheesy, light, fluffy Christmas novella. These cartoon covers really do a disservice to the books. The cover does not fit this book at all. I feel bad for the readers who will miss out on this book because it has this cover that doesn't fit it. There isn't much Christmas in this book at all and I was fine with it. This book is more about music, love, family and sentimentality.

Wreck the Halls is Melody and Beat's story. Their mothers were Steel Birds - a legendary music duo/band. We're talking super famous rock divas. But something happened that broke them apart when they were both pregnant. Now they despise each other and haven't spoken for 20-something years. No one knows why they split up. Melody and Beat are both their only children. They met once during an interview as young teenagers and felt an immediate connection, but it was
a one time chance meeting. They shared similar, lonely experiences growing up in the spotlight as children of stars, both trying to stay below the radar, but neither feeling like they can be themselves or trust friends to get close to them without running to the press. Now as adults, Beat finds himself being blackmailed and needing money. He is approached by a reality show producer with the idea to get Steel Birds back together. He and Melody would be filmed approaching their mothers with the idea to perform a Christmas Eve reunion concert. He knows the mothers won't agree to the plan, but he is desperate and also wants the chance to see and spend time with Melody again. She also is reluctant to participate as she likes to lay low in the media. But meeting Beat again, she feels their strong connection, like they have known each other forever and can relate to each other in a way no one else could. So they both agree to spending the next three weeks together being livestreamed, trying to get to the bottom of Steel Birds break up and convincing their mothers to reunite.

I loved Beat and Melody. Tessa Bailey wove a spell showing how they were truly meant to be together and were soulmates. The way they fit with each other was magical. They were both sweet characters, had great chemistry and I definitely felt the love between them. There is good spice and a few kinks to work out in that department, but it was ironed out along the way. This is the kind of book that would make a good movie, as I could see each scene so vividly. I enjoyed the great story, the music, their strong-personalitied mothers, the NYC setting at Christmastime, and the reality tv aspect. It was fun seeing the fans fall in love with this couple and their blossoming romance playing out on their screens.

Overall, Wreck the Halls is a great book. Hard to put down, Melody and Beat's story is emotional, heartfelt, sweet and sexy. I was very happy to see them end up together as true soulmates. I definitely see myself re-reading this book again. I hope potential readers can look past this cheesy cover and pick up this book and I look forward to more from Ms. Bailey in the future.

This was so good! Love the Way you Spy is book one in the New Recruits series, starring the McKay-Taggart kids all grown up. I loved this start to a new series! This book is Tasha Taggart, Ian's daughter, and Dare's book. Tasha works for the CIA on a team with her sisters and other family friends. She works more behind the scenes, trying to keep everyone in line. The night before their operation, she goes out with the group, looking for a one-night-stand to blow off some steam, which is out of character. She meets Dare and they have an amazing night, with them both wishing they could have more time together, but not imagining it would work out. When Tasha goes into her operation the next day, though, she finds Dare is entangled in the company they are looking into. This makes the situation complicated and leads her to have to lie to him, all while falling for him in the meantime.

This is one of my favorite Lexi Blake books so far. I loved all the Easter Eggs into the McKay-Taggart kids lives and relationships to play out in future books. It is so exciting and there are so many possibilities. I may go back and re-read this to take notes about those tidbits. I love all of the kids and all of the new characters. I loved Tasha, especially, and Dare too. Tasha is not an operative. She is on the backside of the operations for her group, while her sisters are out in the field. She is softer, but still strong. I loved seeing Ian and Charlie as parents of grown kids. And I loved that there is therapy going on to work out problems between Dare and Tasha. Their romance was sweet, sexy and suspenseful. This book was so fun.

Ahh, I'm so excited about this series! I can't wait to see where it is headed. I hope Ms. Blake writes fast and never stops writing in this world!

Review:

3.75-4 stars

****

This was a good book. Start Us Up is the first book in a brand-new series by Lexi Blake. This is Ivy and Heath's book. Ivy is was a rising star in the tech world when her company went under and her boyfriend, who she worked with, left her in the lurch. Nursing her pride, she is trying to find the next new thing in order to gain her footing in her career. Her friend introduces her to Heath, who has a great idea for a new matchmaking app, in hopes that they will hit it off romantically, which Ivy is not interested in. Heath's grandmother is a legendary, successful matchmaker in her neighborhood of NYC. He wants to start a company where he matches couples up using his grandmother's formula. Ivy is interested in his app, though not just for matchmaking, but for all kinds of other things like restaurants and shopping. She sees in this app the chance to redeem herself to the public and other techies. As Ivy and Heath work together, they get closer and develop feelings for each other. They must race to complete their app before their competition, and Ivy's bitter ex, can.

This is book is a contemporary romance with no romantic suspense, which is a departure for Ms. Blake, who is one of my favorite authors. At first, I felt very disoriented because it seemed like a different writing style than I am used to. The book took some time for me to get into, but it felt more and more like a Lexi Blake book as it went on. The story was good. Ivy and Heath had a reverse grumpy sunshine dynamic. Ivy had some pretty serious baggage to get over, from her past relationship and her parents. She needed some therapy, I think. Heath seemed a little too sunshine at first, almost bland. But as the book went on, I really liked him. He was a doll and adored Ivy, who grew some and who I liked as well. Their romance was a little lower heat and chemistry than I usually find in Lexi Blake books. Also, I would have loved an epilogue and more information about their app. But I still enjoyed this book. There was a fun cast of side characters, including Ivy's two best friends who I think the next two books will feature. I liked them all and I look forward to more to come from this series.

Overall, this was a good book and start to a new series. I was glad Ivy and Heath got together and fell in love. I look forward to more from Ms. Blake and this series in the future.
