Just five months ago, Valentine O'Dell started working at a very special kind of nightclub – one where you can dance the night away, or live out your greatest fantasy. She's learned to lose herself to her nights, forgetting all her day time woes as she charms every man she meets. It's easy enough to do when she doesn't let her feelings get involved.

Then Ari Sharapova walks in and changes everything.

Working for his father's law firm has left Ari with very little control over his life, so when he sees Valentine for the first time, he sees a girl who is desperate for someone to take care of her. To take over her. So what he can't get for himself in the day time, he'll simply take for himself at night. But when power struggles lead to real feelings, who's actually controlling whom?

Some relationships are better left in the dark.

Excerpt

When Valentine got to the ladies room, she all but fell through the door. A bathroom attendant jumped out of her chair, asking if she was alright.
“I'm fine,” she groaned. “Just bumped into a blonde nightmare.”
“Oh,” the attendant laughed. “One of those, huh?”
“Rich people are the worst,” Val growled, moving to lean against a sink. “You know? They just think they can talk to you however they want. Screw them.”
“I couldn't agree more.”
She was ready to go off on another tangent, but then the door burst open once again. Ari strode into the room, startling both of them.
“Sir, this is the -” the attendant started.
Leave,” he ordered her, though his eyes never left Valentine's.
The attendant looked unsure for a moment. Val rolled her eyes, but she eventually nodded her head, signaling that it was okay. The attendant nodded back, then demurely left the room.
“A little dramatic,” Val said once the door had shut.
“What the fuck do you think you're doing?” he demanded.
She belatedly realized he was angry. Ari was very, very angry. She glanced around the room.
“Well, I was gonna pee – I thought this was the best place to do it,” she tried to joke. His glare grew even more severe and he loomed over her.
“What are you doing here? At this restaurant? With that piece of shit out there?” he clarified. Her jaw dropped.
“Uh, excuse me, I think you'll find that your ex is the only piece of shit here,” she informed him. “You should've told her not to come where she isn't wanted.”
“Don't you ever tell me what to do. Now explain yourself.”
Explain myself?” Valentine laughed loudly and stepped away from the sink, not wanting him to have the power position of leaning over her. “Excuse me, but I'm not your girlfriend. I don't have to explain anything to you.”
“No, you're my property, and as such there are rules you must abide by,” he growled. “Rules we both agreed upon.”
So much of what he'd just said was messed up, but she decided to save most of it for later and tackle what exactly it was that had him so pissed off right now.
“That's why you're upset?” she asked. “Because of the guy I'm having dinner with? Because of Ralph?
“I'm upset because you're breaking the rules. I paid a lot of money for you – I won't tolerate insubordination.”
“You paid a lot of money for my time,” Val corrected him. “So screw you, Ari, I'm not breaking shit.”
“I told you in the beginning,” he started. “No other 'clients' – no picking anyone else up at your club. And I don't believe for one second you met Ralph out there on Tinder, or at the laundromat, or at school, or wherever, so he must be a client. What the fuck.
Oh my god, he's jealous. Jeez, you fuck a guy a couple times and suddenly he thinks he owns you.
Yet still, somewhere deep down in her chest, her heart began to beat faster.
“Yes, he's a client,” Val snapped. “But I didn't break any rules. I agreed to a dinner date with him before I met you, it's been set up for weeks now, I'm just fulfilling a deal. My world doesn't revolve around you, Ari.”
“It had better fucking start to.”
“Are you kidding?” she asked. “You're mad? How do you think I feel, seeing you here with friends and not being able to acknowledge you, and then having your evil ex talk to me like that, like she's still with you?”
“Deal with it – you knew what you were signing up for.”
Val was pretty sure steam was about to shoot out of her ears.
“I signed up to give you exclusive rights to my time,” she growled. “Not to be verbally abused by your bitchy ex-girlfriend, and not to be treated like some contractually obligated whore.”
“If the contract fits.”
Valentine slapped him before she could stop herself, shocking both of them.
“Don't you ever talk to me like that again!” she hissed. Ari stared down at her, his blue eyes ablaze with anger, that errant lock of hair falling across his forehead once again.
“I'll talk to you however I want. Don't ever fucking hit me again.”
She let out a frustrated shriek, then she slapped him again before pounding her hands against his chest. He struggled to grab hold of her arms, shoving her across the room and slamming her up against the wall by the door. He pinned her wrists near her head, then they glared at each other, both their chests heaving, both their hearts raging.
He's the worst.
She was suddenly kissing him. Or he was kissing her. It was impossible to tell – they were no longer two separate entities. He let go of her wrists and she immediately started clawing at the front of his blazer, trying to pull it apart. His left hand went around her throat, gently squeezing, while his right hand went to her exposed thigh, rubbing the outside of it.
“This dress,” Ari gasped against her. “Jesus, when I saw it …”
“When I put it on tonight, I thought of you,” Valentine spoke quickly, finally undoing the button and pushing her hands inside his jacket.
I want to fucking rip it off of you.
“God, yes, I want that, too,” she groaned, dragging her nails down his back, wishing her hands were against his skin.
Then his tongue was back between her lips, just as aggressive as always. He didn't just take a taste when he kissed – Ari made a whole meal of her mouth, and she loved being devoured.

Author Bio

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

REVIEW:

4.25 stars
****

This was a good start to this trilogy! The Initiation is book one in the Filthy Rich Americans trilogy and is the beginning of Marist's story. This book is very twisty, turny and full of surprises, so I don't want to say much about the story without risk of spoiling the book. I will say, Marist is the second daughter of a well-off family and is antisocial and awkward. Royce is the rich, manipulative son of the most powerful family in town. Marist is thrust into his world and she has to decide how much of herself she is willing to give. Drawn into Royce's web, she finds herself doing things she never believed she would in order to protect her family and becoming a person she never thought she would be.

This book is really good! It felt a little Cruel Intention-esque. The setting is a world where people are willing to do anything for money, power and status. We don't know as readers, what is the truth and what is lies. The story was twisty, turny, sexy, mysterious and a little dark. There is a doozie of a cliffhanger. I was left not fully understanding what was going on and who Marist should trust. I liked Marist. She is smart, brave and she has backbone . She has to be willing to stand up for herself in this world going forward. I liked what I think I know of Royce so far, but that could all change in the upcoming books.

Overall, this was an easy, intriguing read. I couldn't put it down, read it in one sitting and then thought about it for days. I can. not. wait. for the rest of the trilogy and I hope it comes fast!

Excerpt:

Every pair of eyes in the restaurant was on us as we were led to our table for dinner. Probably not every pair, but God, it felt that way. “Is it just me,” I asked over the top of my menu, “or is everyone staring at us?” Royce was indifferent. “They’re staring at you.” His statement rattled me. “Why?” “Because you’re here with me.” His gaze never lifted to mine, like he couldn’t be bothered. “Or more likely, because you’re fucking gorgeous. Who knows?” Breath halted in my lungs. “You can’t just say shit like that.” The leather-bound menu holder dropped onto the table with a thud, and I was met with the full power of Royce’s irritated stare. “That you’re beautiful? You are. Get over it.” Dismay twisted my lips into a frown. “Please, don’t. I don’t need bullshit lines from someone like you.” “It’s not a line, and . . . someone like me?” More annoyance darted through his eyes, but intrigue too. “What’s that supposed to mean?” How was I going to put it into words? “You’re a ‘haver.’ I mean, you could have any woman in this room if you wanted, and probably some of the guys too. You’re young, hot, and filthy rich.” His irritation vanished. It was replaced with an arrogant expression that said none of this was news to him. I pushed forward, gathering steam. “Me?” I said. “I’m a ‘have-not.’ I’m sure you didn’t intend for it to happen, but when you said I was a nobody, you made it true. No one will touch me.” “I touched you.” He was immune to my scorching glare. “You wanted to know why I was still a virgin last year. Well, there’s your answer. You’re the reason, Royce. Nobody would be caught dead with me.” He considered the accusation I’d lobbed at him. “You’re wrong,” he said finally. “I was aware what was going to happen. It’s exactly why I said it.” My head turned into a void. “What?” He leaned over the table to ensure he had my full attention. “I saw you at the bar with your sister that night. You were swaying to the music, all happy, and pretty, and it pissed me off. My father had already laid out plans for me. I was supposed to be with Emily, but that wasn’t what I wanted.” I clenched the menu in my hands. I sensed where he was going, but I couldn’t wrap my head around it. My heart chugged along, thumping loudly in my ears. “So, yeah. I knew you were behind me when I called you a nobody. I did it on purpose, because I couldn’t stand you with anyone else. I wanted you for myself.” “Oh, my God.” My body flushed hot, although I didn’t know if it was with anger or excitement, or a deadly combination of the two.

REVIEW:

3.75 stars
***

This was a pretty good book! Smitten by the Brit is book two in the Sometimes in Love series. I had not read book one the series, but it worked fine as a standalone. This is Bonnie and Theo's book. Bonnie's best friend is marrying Theo's best friend and they have felt an attraction since they met. But Bonnie has had a boyfriend so nothing ever developed. When Bonnie's relationship blows up spectacularly, Theo consoles her and they have a one night stand. Bonnie does not feel ready for a relationship and Theo is a British Duke who must marry well for his family. But, when Bonnie gets the chance to teach in London, she and Theo begin spending more and more time together, falling for each other along the way.

I liked this story, but I felt like it was a slow starter. I found the book hard to get into at first and it was hard for me to feel chemistry between the characters or a connection to them. But as I kept reading, I liked the book more and felt it turned out pretty good for me. Overall, the book was sweet, sexy and romantic. I liked Bonnie and Theo. I felt bad for all that Bonnie had gone through. Theo was a little overly polite at first, but he turned out to be strong and sexy. I liked the way their romance progressed and seeing them fall for each other. I felt the love and connection between them by the end, but I was a little disappointed that no "I love you"s were ever exchanged. I wanted a little more resolution and an epilogue at the end. Still, this was a mainly enjoyable read. I liked the literary references too.

Overall, I enjoyed Smitten by the Brit. This was my first read by Melonie Johnson and I will probably read more from her in the future.

EXCERPT

“Would you like a beer?” the cute bartender asks me.
I glance at the pile of mint leaves on his cutting board and hesitate. “Sure,” I say. But the mint looks so fresh and pretty.
“I could make you something different.”
“Beer is great. A cold…”
“—lager,” he finishes. “No glass, no opener.”
When I look up to flash him a smile, my heart does a little somersault. Those kind eyes are smiling at me, too. “Thank you,” I whisper.
“It’s really no problem.” He turns toward the beer cooler. “You’re an easy customer, trust me.”
But I really meant—thank you for remembering. As he leans down to grab a bottle for me, I find myself admiring the strong muscles in his back. Stop it, I admonish myself. It only gets worse when he turns around and places the bottle in front of me. I’ve never seen hands like his. I didn’t even know wrists could look muscular.
Even so. Ogling him is not why I came here. I pull out my keychain opener and remove the cap from my beer.
He discards it, gives me another pleasant smile and then picks up his paring knife again.
I take a sip, wondering when he’s going to mention my show at the Coconut Club. He was there. I saw him.
He separates some mint leaves from their stems and says nothing.
I last about seventeen seconds. “Well?”
“Well?” He looks up. “Sorry?”
“Jesus lord.” I close my eyes and then open them again. This is not going how I’d hoped it would. “What did you think?”
“Of…?” His amazing eyes are studying me.
“Forget I asked.” I take a swig of beer.
“Think about what?” He pushes the cutting board aside, and his smile turns knowing.
“My set at the Coconut Club! I saw you holding up that wall in the back. Don’t lie.”
He tips his head back and lets out a sudden laugh. “I’m so busted. I loved your show, but I didn’t expect you to spot me.”
“You loved it so much you weren’t going to say anything?” The sentence sounds crazy to my own ears. I put down the beer. “You know what? Never mind. I’m just being psycho right now. This town is getting into my head.”
“Listen, girly.” He braces both (muscular!) hands on the bar and looks me right in the eye. “I loved it so much that I don’t even know what to say about it. From that moment at the beginning—when you shut that asshole’s maw? To the part where you made a lady cry.” He shakes his head. “I couldn’t look away. And I never wanted it to end.”
I give him a slow blink, just trying to take that in. It’s so much more than I was even hoping to hear.
“Shit, Delilah. If that set doesn’t win you whatever contract you’re looking for, they don’t even deserve you.”
Something warm and unfamiliar settles into the center of my belly. “That might be the nicest thing anyone ever said to me. Which only means you’re still trying to get my phone number.”
He laughs immediately. “Can’t both things be true? Both my musical assessment and my interest in your evening plans?”
“Because you know so much about music.” I flip my hair and take another sip of beer.
“Look. I don’t know shit about music. But I know plenty about talent.” He leans down on a set of forearms I shouldn’t be noticing. “I know that talent sometimes takes a nap at just the wrong moment, but it never stays asleep for long. I also know that luck matters, too. If they don’t give you what you want, it won’t be your fucking fault.”
“Thank you,” I say quietly.
But he’s not done. “I saw something else valuable the other night. You’re good in the clinch. And that counts for double, I swear to God.”
“The clinch?”
“Yeah. You’re not just good at practice.” He pauses, wrinkling up his interesting nose. “What word would a musician use? Okay—you’re not a rehearsal musician. That stage was like your home. Either that or you fake it really well. That’s going to pay your rent someday, I promise.”
“Wow.” It’s like he looked right into my terrified little soul and found the very thing I needed to hear. Those beautiful eyes of his are practically burning me right now, so I have to look away. “Thank you. Really. I really needed that pep talk.”
I make the mistake of looking up at him again, and, for a split second, I see pure yearning. It’s like our souls vibrate at exactly the same frequency. And I have no idea what to do with that.

REVIEW:

3.75-4 stars
****

This was a good book! Descended from Shadows is the first book in the Book of Sindal series. This book is Phoebe and Brandon's story. Phoebe and her two sisters are witches. In their witch community, the women in their family has been tasked for hundreds of years with the responsibility of guarding the Book of Sindal. The mysterious book is full of evil spells that could ruin the world if they get put in the wrong hands. Now, as the keepers of the book, Phoebe and her sisters hold the fate of the world in their hands. Something terrible happens and the book disappears, along with Phoebe's sister Celeste, who has been acting very strange lately. The witches counsel takes the disappearance very seriously. They assign Brandon, head of the Magical Protective Force and Phoebe’s former high school crush, to look for book, and things get a whole lot more complicated. Phoebe is worried about her sister and because of their magical bond, she convinces Brandon that she must go with him to search for the book . Their relationship develops along the way.

While I enjoyed this book, I do think it was a slow starter. There was a lot of telling, not showing, in the beginning with the worldbuilding. But, once the story got going it, turned out to be really good and pretty fast paced. As the book went on, I got more and more hooked. This book is paranormal romance with a strong suspense element, action, and a romance. It was an easy and entertaining read. I really liked Phoebe, her sisters and Brandon. Phoebe and Brandon have a strong connection that felt like they were meant to be. This book has witches, a mysterious book, magic, a strong sisterly bond and a second chance romance. I really enjoyed the story and seeing the romance develop amidst the adventure.

Overall, Descended from Shadows was a good book! I am really looking forward to Phoebe's sisters books and more from by D.G. Swank and Alessandra Thomas in the future!

WW Regret FOR WEB

Every little girl dreams of the fairytale. The one where the white knight rushes in to save her from the clutches of evil. They fall in love, have babies, and live happily ever after.
By that definition, my life should have been a fairytale too.
When I was eight years old, Caven Hunt saved me from the worst kind of evil to walk the Earth. It didn’t matter that I was a kid. I fell in love with him all the same.
But that was where my fairytale ended.
Years later, a one-night stand during the darkest time imaginable gave us a little girl. It was nothing compared to the pitch black that consumed me when I was forced to leave her with Caven for good.
At the end of every fairytale, the happily-ever-after is the one thing that remains consistent. It wasn’t going to be mine, but there hadn’t been a night that passed where I hadn’t prayed that it would be hers.
I owed Caven my life.
However, I owed that innocent child more.
And that included ripping the heart from my chest and facing her father again.

Excerpt:

Life had never been easy for me. Chaos had been following me like a dark cloud, looming and hovering, casting its shadow far and wide despite how bright the path in front of me should have appeared. After growing up the way I had, where happiness had been more of a privilege than a choice, I knew better than to believe that that moment would be anything other than fleeting.
And one second later, the universe proved me right.
I opened the door to see who had rung the bell—a cursory check revealed an empty hallway.
And that’s when I heard it: the sound that changed not only my entire life in the present, but my life for all future days to come.
At first, it was just a grunt, but as if that baby could feel my gaze, the minute my eyes made contact, it let out a sharp cry.
Confusion hit me like a lightning bolt, sending me back a step. I used the door frame for balance as I took in the yellow blanket with a hole only big enough to reveal a pale-pink face.
“What the fuck?” I breathed. Glancing around the hall, I waited for someone to jump out and start laughing. When no one spoke up to issue a punchline, I took a step closer and repeated, “What the fuck?”
I was utterly unable to process the absurdity in front of me.
Of course, I knew the facts.
It was a baby.
On my doorstep.
Alone.
But the why in that equation was glaringly absent.
“Uhhh,” Ian drawled, peering over my shoulder. “Why is there a kid at your door?”
“I have no idea,” I replied, staring down at the squirming and now-screaming bundle. “It was just there when I opened the door.”
Ian shoved me to the side so he could stand beside me. “You’re shitting me, right?”
“Does it look like I’m shitting you?”
He looked from me to the baby, then back again. “How did it get there?”
We were two incredibly smart men who had created a technology empire out of nothing. But, clearly, a baby was too big for either of us to wrap our minds around.
I swept an arm out and pointed to the kid. “I have no clue, but I’m assuming it didn’t catch a cab.”
A light of understanding hit his eyes. He moved first, stepping over the crying baby and hurrying down the hall, searching around the corner near the elevator before returning alone.
The party continued behind me, but even with the door open, the loud chatter was no match for the ear-piecing cries happening in that hallway.
Veronica suddenly appeared beside me, her body going solid as she stammered out. “Is that…a baby?”
“Back up,” I urged, throwing my arm out to block her path as though the infant were going to suddenly morph into a rabid animal. And let’s be honest, I knew nothing about babies. Anything was possible.
Ian dropped to his knees, scooping up the wailing child. Meanwhile, I stood there like a gawking idiot, paralyzed by a weight I didn’t yet understand.
“Call the pol—” He stopped abruptly and reached into the top of the child’s blanket. “Oh shit,” he whispered, his wide, panic-filled eyes flashing to mine.
“What?” I asked, stepping toward him to get a better look at the kid. Only it wasn’t that tiny baby cradled in his arms that made my heart stop and bile rise in my throat.
There, in my best friend’s hand, was a folded piece of notebook paper that had been tucked into the child’s blanket. From the looks of it, the paper was unremarkable in every sense of the word. Blue lines, white spaces, hanging remnants from where it had been haphazardly ripped from a spiral bound notebook. Even the crease was crooked. But it was my name scrawled on the outside in messy, black ink that made it the most remarkable paper in existence.
I snatched it from his hand and, with blood roaring in my ears, opened it.
Caven,
I’m sorry. I never meant for this to happen. This is our daughter Keira. I’ll love her forever. Take care of her the way I can’t.
Written with regret,
Hadley
The hall began to spin, my head feeling like every ounce of blood had been drained from my body. The thundering in my ears faded and the loud chatter of my guests, who were suddenly aware that something was happening at the door, roared to life.
And then the chaos finally found me all over again—the past playing out in my head like my life flashing before my eyes.
I sucked in a deep breath and looked at the baby in his arms. The blanket had fallen off its head just enough to reveal a patch of fine hairs, more orange than its mother’s red.
“Call the police,” I declared, turning on a toe and walking back into my apartment, leaving Ian standing in the hall with Hadley’s child.
Shoving through the crowd of concerned onlookers, I headed straight to the bottles of liquor lining the counter. I didn’t bother with ice or even a glass. I threw back that bottle of vodka, hoping like hell the burn of the alcohol could numb the panic coursing through my veins.
Through it all, that baby never stopped crying.

REVIEW:
4.25-4.5 stars
****

Ahh, this book was sooo good! I could not put it down and I ending up reading it in one sitting. Written with Regret is book one in the Regret duet. This is the first book in Caven and Hadley's story. It is a twisty, turny, angsty read so I can't describe the story very much without giving too much away. I will say this- Caven is a tech millionaire whose life is turned upside down when a newborn baby is left on his doorstep with a note that she is his daughter, Rosalee. Now, five years later, Hadley has returned with hopes of being in Rosalee's life. But there is so much more to the story than that.

This book is fast paced and keeps you guessing. It is emotional, angsty, sexy and it even made me cry. Caven and Hadley had gone through a lot of heartache in their lives from a young age. Their relationship starts off very rocky and is slow burn, enemies to lovers. I really liked both of their characters and felt bad for both of them. I loved them together and I am rooting for them to finally get the HEA they deserve. Rosalee was adorable and written age appropriately.

Now, this book does have a doozie of a cliffhanger. So many questions! It really leaves you wondering what is going on and if anything is what it seemed to be. I can. not. wait. to read book 2, Written with You. I definitely recommend this book and look forward to more from Aly Martinez!
