From New York Times bestselling author Jay Crownover comes DOWNFALL, a sexy, standalone contemporary romance! DOWNFALL is now available on all retailers for today only! Grab your copy today before it moves to Amazon KU tomorrow!

About DOWNFALL:

Solomon Sanders doesn’t have time to fall in love. Until a stunning, skittish, single mother forces him to pause and recognize just how empty and hollow his busy life has become.

From the start, it’s been ingrained in Solo’s DNA to fight.

Fight for what he believes is right.

Fight for the people he loves.

Fight for the traces of good in a place which tends to be filled with a variety of bad.

Fight for survival, so at some point, his life will quiet down and find a normal pace.

He wasn’t ready for the impact his secretive, shy, obviously out of place new neighbor was going to have on him. And never in a million years was he prepared to fall head over heels for her and her young daughter.

Now, he’s facing the most important, and the hardest fight he’s ever fought… the battle to win Orley’s damaged heart.

Orley Vincent’s heart is full of fear, leaving no space for love. Until a big, brash, brawler of a man forces his way in and makes her realize facing her fears is the only way she can ever be free.

From the start, Orley was groomed to believe she wasn’t good enough.

She wasn’t the perfect daughter. Or student. Or girlfriend.

But, she has always been the best mother she could be to her daughter, Noble.

Keeping Noble safe has always been the one thing she was determined to do, which ironically, is how she ended up on the wrong side of the tracks, living next door to an unlikely hero. Orley’s a woman on the run. She had no idea her frantic sprint was going to land her in the tattooed arms of a man ready to teach her how to fight for herself… and for love.

  Excerpt:

“What did I tell you about lurking around my place, Skinner? I don’t fucking like it.” The guy’s voice was a low growl. Intimidating without even trying. “I don’t fucking like you.” Out of habit, I reached back and covered Noble’s ears with my hands. She wasn’t new to foul language, but I didn’t need her repeating this stranger’s garbage words, which she absolutely would at the most inopportune moment. My eyes widened as he shook the lurker hard enough to snap his head back and forth comically. The smaller man whimpered and clutched at the hands locked on the front of his dirty coat. “Let me go, Solo. I was just having some fun. She’s a prissy bitch. You’ve seen her walking around here like her shit don’t stink.” The pleading was wasted. The larger man was clearly unmoved. The new arrival’s massive arms tensed and flexed as he practically threw the other man on the ground. I noticed he was dressed in nothing more than a dark t-shirt even though it was chilly outside. The short sleeves showed off more than his impressive build. In the faded street lights, I could hardly make out the designs that were inked over almost every visible inch of skin. That wasn’t an uncommon look in this neighborhood. Gang tattoos, prison tattoos, and general outsiders who called these streets home tended to rock some serious ink, but this guy’s looked more deliberate and artistic than a simple statement piece. As soon as my attacker was back on the ground, the bigger guy stepped forward. I reflexively cringed as he lowered his big, booted foot down on the other man’s unprotected private parts. A wail of agony shrieked through the air, and I realized belatedly I should be hauling ass for my apartment, not standing around waiting to see how this brutal display of street justice played out. I clutched Noble’s hand in mine and briskly jogged the last few yards to my apartment building. I lifted Noble over the sleeping homeless man and hustled up the five flights of stairs to our floor. The elevator had been broken since before we’d moved in, not that I would dare let either of us get trapped in a small place with anyone from this complex. I was a panting, quaking mess when I finally slammed the door. I dropped to my knees and pulled my daughter into my arms, covering her tear-streaked face in kisses and whispering soothing words over and over again. There was no way this could be our new normal. But it was. Noble deserved so much better than this. I sighed, pushing her hair off her precious face. “You know what, sweets?” She blinked big, watery blue eyes at me and shook her head. “I think we both need cake.” She nodded and cuddled close to me. It wouldn’t occur to me until much later that I hadn’t bothered to shout a thank you or shown any appreciation at all to my savior. I had no clue if he was any better than the scumbag who had grabbed me, but he had at least kept my daughter safe, so I owed him, even if he was one of countless things in this forever dark place that scared the life out of me. People didn’t help other people in this neighborhood… but he had stopped and helped me, whether his intentions were altruistic or not. And I owed him… well… at the very least, more than a piece of cake.

REVIEW:

4 stars
****

This was a good book! Downfall is Orley and Solo's story. Orley is a good girl, from a rich family who was brought up in loveless household. After some terrible family drama, she finds herself on the run from her cruel father. Orley has a three year old daughter, Noble. In order to keep her safe, she takes Noble to hide her and moves to a very rough, crime-ridden neighborhood. Orley is struggling to scrape by with very little money and to keep them both safe. One night, she is saved from being attacked on her street by Solo. He lives in her apartment building and works restoring cars at a chop shop. But he is a very good guy and he sees that Orley really needs help in life, so he steps in. As he helps her, he falls for the young mother and her sweet daughter. But can he keep them safe when their past comes back to haunt her?

I really enjoyed this book. I liked both Orley and Solo. They are both good people, just trying to get by in the world. Especially Solo, he was tough guy on the outside, but turned out to be so sweet. He knew he wanted to help the struggling single mother as soon as he met her and never hesitated. Watching him fall for Orley and Noble such a treat. Noble was also fun to read about. She was adorable and age appropriate. The book was set in a rough, gritty neighborhood, so it does feel a little dark. But Noble, Orley and Solo were so sweet and such a light that their love for each other brightened their world and brought them hope. This was just a good story with great writing and deep, complicated characters. I did want a little more secure HEA, but that is just my personal taste in reading. Still, I did enjoy this book.

Overall, Downfall was a great read. It is gritty and sexy, but also sweet and full of emotion. There is an innocence in the way the characters fall in love that is disparate of the fact that they live in this rough and tumble neighborhood. There is also a hopeful feeling for their future despite the fact that many feel hopeless in the world they are living in. I very much enjoyed Orley and Solo's journey to love and how their relationship developed. I look forward to more from Ms. Crownover in the future!

Excerpt:

I turn to look at her. She’s framed in the doorway with the light bright behind her and her face in shadow, her hair a golden corona around her head. A band of tightness settles around my chest. I take a step toward her. She takes a step back. I don’t know what she sees on my face, but her eyes are huge and her pulse is throbbing in the side of her neck. When I take another step and she retreats again, I stop. “Are you afraid of me?” She laughs shakily. “No.” “Then why are you backing up?” “I was hoping I’d be at the wall by now. I need it to hold me up. I’m so excited I think I might faint.” The band around my chest grows tighter. “Stay where you are,” I say, holding her gaze. The eye contact feels like a touch, like an electrical current running on a loop between us. It’s probably close to ninety degrees, but the skin on my arms raises in gooseflesh. As I take another step toward her, she flexes her hands open and draws a breath. She says with quiet wonder, “I can feel my heartbeat in my fingertips.” “I know. Me too.” I advance another step. She’s an arm’s length away. I see it when she begins to tremble. “This must be what a stroke feels like,” she whispers as I reach out and touch her face. “Probably not this good.” I slide my hand into her hair, and she bites her lip. When I move closer, she raises her hands and flattens them on my chest. I know she can feel how hard my heart is pounding. Her breathing is as erratic as mine. “Oh God,” she says faintly. “I really hope this kiss you’re about to give me is as amazing as the pre-kiss. I think my panties just went up in flames.” “Not a good idea to talk to me about your panties right now, sweetheart,” I murmur, brushing my lips over her jaw. “I’m barely in control as it is.” I nuzzle my nose into the soft, sweet spot under her earlobe and drag in a breath scented of her skin. She shudders. I cradle her head in my hands as her fingers dig into my chest. I open my mouth over the pulse in her throat and she moans, low and soft, arching into me. That little moan sets my entire body on fire. With one hand cupped around the back of her head and the other around her jaw, I tilt her head back and fit my mouth to hers. Her lips part. Our tongues touching is an electrical shock. She makes a soft, feminine noise in the back of her throat that makes me feel savage, like an animal. We stand in the gloom and kiss, deep and slow, until the urge to push her against the wall, lift her skirt, and thrust deep inside her is a hot, heady pulse in my veins. She slides her arms up around my shoulders so her breasts press against my chest. I feel her nipples, two hard points in a lush expanse of skin, and groan into her mouth. My dick is so hard it’s throbbing. “I want you to kiss me everywhere,” she whispers, breaking away from my mouth but staying in my arms. She’s panting. Her eyes look glazed. “I want you to take off my clothes and kiss me everywhere like that. Promise me you will.” I huff out a breath that’s part laugh and part groan. “So it measured up to the pre-kiss, huh?”

REVIEW:

4 stars
****

This is a good book. But I should state from the start that this book ends on a cliffhanger.  I was surprised and upset to get to the end and find that. There is no closure at all and it ends on a shocking cliffy. Nowhere in the blurb that I read on Netgalley is the words " ***Part one of a three part series.*** ", which is posted at the bottom of the Goodreads blurb, but also not posted in the Amazon blurb. I probably still would have chosen to read and review this book, but would have loved to know ahead of time so I didn't expect a full, standalone story. I actually really liked how the book was going and would have rated the book even higher without the unexpected cliffhanger.

This is the story of Naz and Eva. Eva is on the run from her ex, a Russian billionaire psycho who abused her. She is hiding out in Mexico, in disguise under an assumed name. Naz works for a security company who has been hired by her ex to find her and send in updates on her. He doesn't know who her ex really is and that he is in the wrong. But after observing Eva, he finds her in a dangerous position and steps in to to help her. Once they meet, these two find they have amazing chemistry, and despite their precarious situation, they can't stay away from each other. But that puts them both in danger and they must face the consequences of their actions.

I loved Naz and Eva. They had an amazing connection and adored each other so much. The story was very good. I found the book to be very romantic, sexy, and emotional with great adventure and suspense. I just really wanted these two to get an HEA, which I felt they deserved after going through so much.

While this was a great romantic suspense and had rich imagery and detailed characters I loved, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth from the ending. Cliffhangers are not that bad, for me, if I expect them. But I do think the publisher should have been more clear that this was not a standalone book. Still, I enjoyed this book enough, despite that, that I will continue with the series.

BLURB:

As a professional poker player, Lia Carrington is used to taking risks...except when it comes to men. From the moment Becket Parker spotted the gorgeous gambler at his table, he knew she was meant to be his. Now he's just got to convince her that he's a bet worth taking.

REVIEW

3.5 stars
***

Bet Me , Baby is a fun, entertaining read and a good addition the the Vegas, Baby series. Lia is a professional poker player in Vegas for a poker tournament. She has a few days to spare before the tournament starts and she meets Beckett in the hotel. He is part hotel owner and a blackjack dealer for fun on the side. It's love at first sight for these two.

I enjoyed this book. The casino and game playing setting was fun. I liked Lia and Beckett. There is very little conflict, which made the story feel a bit lacking in interest, but I still enjoyed it for the most part. So, while this is not my favorite Fiona Davenport book, it is a quick, sweet and sexy read and is worth reading.

EXCERPT

“This belongs to you, Miss Carrington.”
“Lia,” I corrected automatically, before I realized who was trying to get my attention. Turning around, I found Becket standing in front of me, his long fingers holding out the one-hundred-dollar chip I’d given him.
“Lia,” he echoed. “You like the shortened version better than Cornelia?”
“Yeah, but should I be worried about how you know my name? And how you’ll make a living if you give back all of your tips?”
The grin he flashed me sent shivers down my spine. “Your name is attached to your player’s card profile, which I swiped at my table for you.”
“Ah, that makes sense.” I pointed at the chip in his hand. “And this?”
“The only way you’re going to be able to talk me out of giving this back to you is if you let me take you out for some ridiculously expensive drinks.”
“Hmm.” I tapped my finger against my chin while I pretended to consider his offer. “That waitress never did come back with my second drink, and I am thirsty.”
“I’m going to take that as a yes.” He tucked my arm into the crook of his and started to lead me to the entrance of the hotel.
“I’m pretty sure they serve ridiculously expensive drinks in all of the bars and restaurants here at the Lennox.”
He pulled me a little bit closer, almost as though he thought I was going to try to get away from him. “That’s a bet I wouldn’t take since you’d be right.”
“Then where are you taking me?”
“I’d prefer to have you all to myself, without any audience, so I was thinking of someplace where my co-workers aren’t the ones serving us. Does that work for you?”
Oh, yes. His take-charge attitude more than worked for me.

Adele was babbling, she knew, but she couldn't stop herself. So she was thankful when Jones cut her off and yanked her close. He sat up at the same time, and before she even realized what was happening, he was kissing her.
Finally.
The last time – the only time – they'd kissed, he'd disappeared forever. This time, she was determined to make the most of it. They both shifted onto their knees, arms going around each other, and when she gasped at the intensity of his hold, his tongue slipped into her mouth. She moaned and curled her fingers in his hair, praying the moment would last forever.
Ah, but this place is the anti-prayer. So shall you think it, so shall it not be.
Jones' hands had moved to cup either side of her face. He pulled away, then leaned back in for another slow kiss. Tried to say something, then kissed her again. Once more, and she could just feel it – it was the last one.
“I wish we could stay here forever,” he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers.
“Me, too,” she whispered back. He grabbed hold of her wrists and gently removed her arms from around his neck.
“But it can't be. You either go forward, or you go back. You can only stand still for so long, Adele.”
She didn't even know what he was talking about, and she knew he was right. The storm above them was getting worse. Something was coming. Eternity waited for no one, not even her, it seemed.
She squeezed her eyes shut tight.
“I tried, Jones. I tried to stand still with you. I tried to get caught in the now with you.”
“I know you did. And now I want you to try something else,” his voice was so low, she could barely hear it over all the thunder.
“What?”
“I want you to concentrate. And then, I want you to open your eyes.”
She bit into her bottom lip and turned her head, brushing her nose against the side of his cheek so she could remember the feel of him. Inhaled deeply so she could remember the smell of him. Then she took an even deeper breath and did as she was told.
She concentrated on the ground below her. Listened to the storm raging above her. Felt Jones' body heat in front of her.
And she also remembered. Could hear her brother Ocean laugh in her ear, the sound made such rare appearances. Could picture her brother River standing in front of her, looking so serious and concerned. Could feel her brother August around her, giving her one of his big hugs.
The wind around them didn't lessen in intensity, but it did slow down. Or time slowed, she couldn't be sure. There was a terrific booming noise, followed by the sound of something ripping. At first, she thought it was the sky – the storm must have really been opening up. Then she felt a tremor in the ground under her, and she knew what it was.
The giant tree was finally tipping over. It groaned as gravity took hold of its weight and pulled it over the edge of the cliff. She could actually sense the roots being ripped from the earth as the tree made a swan dive.
And as the roots came free, they tore apart the face of the cliff. She could feel the ground crumbling away from her, could tell she was falling. Jones held onto her for as long as he could, but just as his arms were about to reach their limit, gravity took over once again and yanked her away completely.

REVIEW:

4 stars
****

Wow! While I Was Away is good and so different than anything I've ever read. So unpredictable and genre-bending. This is a book that you should go into blind. I cannot describe the plot without giving anything away, but at its' heart, it is about soulmate connections and how true love will always find a way, no matter the time or distance.

I enjoyed this book very much and could not put it down. This is a romance that is focused on a spiritual, magical connection between the characters. It has strong emotions, humor and love. There is also a fantasy element that was so fun and original. The story was very good and I loved all of the characters. They were in such difficult situations, but remained strong and made the most of what life handed them. There is a low heat level, but I did not care one bit. I did want to see a little more resolution firsthand and to see a bit more of what life was like for everyone at the end. But, overall, While I Was Away is a good read.

Overall, I definitely recommend this book. It is one of the most original books I've ever read. While I Was Away is an amazing adventure and should not be missed.

Author Bio

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.
