I haven’t always been this bad… Up until recently, I was the kind of girl who wore white cotton panties and bent at the knees rather than the waist. Pomp and circumstance changed all that. Jaxson Cassidy was my first taste of bad, and I liked it more than I should have. Just not in the way I was meant to. I couldn’t help myself though. I found him irresistible. That sexy grin, those skilled fingers, and that dirty, dirty mouth were a lethal combination. I wasn’t supposed to want him. I wasn’t supposed to let him put his hands on me. I wasn’t supposed to do a lot of things…but I did. He wants to keep me close. I should push him away. He says he can help me. I’m not so sure. For some reason, he thinks there’s good left in me. What if he’s wrong? Everyone knows a good boy can’t turn a bad girl around. Everyone knows it’s always the other way. Everyone…except him.

Excerpt

Leaning on the bleachers, Chris cracked peanuts between his teeth and spit the shells. I hadn’t seen him in days and it seemed like years. Every time I saw the kick of his hips and the way his lips stretched across his teeth when he smiled, it seemed like the first time. I watched him. He watched me. School started the next day. We’d go back into our different worlds. Would we meet again? Would we see each other at all? We’d grappled with the question by avoiding it. A waft of smoke from the grills came between us. We were alone. Surrounded by people, we were alone. He pitched his peanut bag in the trash and washed it back with a bottle of off-brand cola. When he finished, he sucked in his bottom lip to catch an errant drop. He tossed the bottle up. It spun in the air, and with a tap of his knuckle on its way down, he sent it into the trash. I stepped toward him, and he stepped back. Not away. He stepped back toward something, flicking his finger that I should follow. Easiest decision I’d ever made. It was barely even a decision. I glanced around for Mom and Dad. They were in the gazebo with Badger, the new mayor, and his staff. Harper and the kids played with the puppies while Johnny and his wife watched. Lance jaunted around the perimeter, peeing on poles whenever he could, nipping back any sibling who got too big for their britches, ever the alpha. I tilted directions slightly toward the bathrooms, then once past the bleachers, I saw Chris peeking from an alley between the hardware store and the library. I picked up my skirt and ran toward him, cutting the corner so hard I lost my balance. Out of nowhere, his hand was on my arm, keeping me from falling over. Finger to lips, he led me to a black iron door. He clinked through his keys and opened it, stepping out of the way so I could pass through. We were in an office. He closed the door with a loud clap, leaving the window as the only light. “Chris?” I barely got out the S before his lips kissed his name away. He put his hands on my jaw, keeping it still so he could invade my mouth. It felt good to give it to him. My body lost all its strength, held up only by the electrical currents between us. “Catherine,” he said in a breath, keeping his lips an inch from my face as he spoke. “Where are we?” “Back of the hardware store. I open on Thursdays.” “What are we going to do? I’m scared.” “Of me?” “Of not seeing you anymore.” “I’ll find you.” I clutched his shirt as if I’d be swept away without him. “I don’t fit in anywhere. Harper is so smart she tolerates me. The only time I feel right, like I’m part of something, like I belong, is when I’m with you.” “One more year. Then you can go to college and I’ll come after. We’ll be so far away, we’ll forget our names. When people ask where we’re from, we won’t even know.” “I don’t know if we’ll make it a year. I feel like they see us. Even now.” I must have been shaking, because he put his arms around me so tightly it hurt. I loved the pain of his attention. It was the pain of safety, of care, of being broken just enough for release. “Harder,” I said into his shoulder. He squeezed me so tightly I could just barely breathe, and the tension rolled off me like water. He let his arms go slack enough to look me in the face. “We’ll make it. Then I’ll follow you anywhere. I’ll be your puppy dog.” “Oh, Chris, don’t be silly.” “Don’t deny me. I’m yours.” He said the last word with a gusto I’d never associated with myself. As if life was something to grab with both hands and free like a bird that could carry us into the sky. Together, we were freedom. The bird launched from my chest and flew to my lips when we kissed again. Not a kiss of relief this time, but a kiss of passion. Ours was a kiss that began a string of thoughtless acts. His hands slid down my body, grazing my breasts, landing at my waist. I felt the hardness under his jeans. I should have been scared, or freaked out, or ashamed, but I wasn’t. I was free. He broke the kiss and stroked my bottom lip with his thumb. “Should we go back?” “No.” I took his wrist and put his hand on the triangle below my belly. He gasped and his lashes fluttered. Seeing that he liked it sent my body to the edge of common sense. This was crazy and I didn’t care. Being the good girl hurt, and this felt good. “My parents have to stay at the barbecue,” I said. “That’s their job.” He hesitated. Swallowed hard. Pinched a bit of my skirt fabric. I nodded.

  EXCERPT:

The best thing about grocery shopping at midnight was that the stores were relatively quiet. As someone sensitive to life-force energy, Aurora Mercer liked that. But sometimes the lack of activity wasn’t a good thing. Like now, as she walked her groceries out to her car. Fog common to Portland, Oregon in the fall had rolled in, obscuring everything farther than about forty feet out. She’d parked her dark blue Mercedes close to the building and under a light, but as she opened the rear door she was unnerved to see a black van pull next to her, blocking her faint view of the store—and blocking employee views of her. The van’s windows were blacked out. She laughed nervously. It was probably nothing. Serial killers didn’t drive anything so obvious, right? Right? Still, she picked up her pace, not caring that she was all but throwing her groceries in the back seat and food was spilling everywhere. She could salvage the cherries on the floor when she got home, and raspberry juice stains on cream leather wouldn’t look that bad. Not as bad as blood. She finished and slammed the door closed. But shit...the cart corral was several stalls away. Her heart started racing at the thought of getting that far from her car and the light. Screw it, she could leave the cart here. She hated when people did that, but avoiding death was as good an excuse as any to be lazy. Hastily she pushed the cart in front of her car, secured it over a concrete tire block— “Fog’s bad, isn’t it?” She spun around with a startled yelp. An attractive man, maybe six-four with a Celtic cross tattoo on his neck, stood between her and her driver side door. How had he gotten there so fast? Stay calm. Easier said than done, but she’d give it a shot. “Excuse me,” she said firmly. “I’m in a hurry.” He didn’t budge. “I’m sure you are.” As casually as she could, she reached into her purse for her keys and the attached canister of pepper spray, but as she fished around she realized she’d left them on her back seat. Her heart skipped a beat and then pounded so fast and hard she could feel it in her ears. Deep breaths. You don’t have your pepper spray, but you aren’t weaponless. The man smiled as if he knew she’d come up empty of pepper spray and was happy about it. “Problem? Something I can help you with?” “No. Thank you.” She dredged up a smile of her own and prayed it looked genuine and not like she was scared out of her mind. “If you’ll step aside, I’ll just go—” She broke off as, out of the corner of her eye, she detected movement. Another man-shaped shadow stepped out of the fog behind the van, and her throat constricted with terror.

We met in a trapped elevator.

Emmett was on his way to work, sophisticated and handsome in his tailored suit and tie. I was on my way to the sperm bank. Awkward, right? At thirty-five, my life hadn’t taken the path I thought it would and I was tired of waiting—I wanted a baby. And I was ready to take matters into my own hands to make it happen. After our ill-fated elevator encounter, Emmett insisted on taking me to dinner—he also insisted on something else—that I ditch my plan involving a turkey baster and let him do the job. He would be my baby daddy. He was a wealthy and powerful CEO with little interest in diapers or playdates. And since he didn’t want kids, I’d be on my own once his bun was in my oven, free to go my own way. This full-length standalone contains a hot, swoonworthy hero, lots of playful banter and some hot baby-making ! Enjoy.

EXCERPT:

“Kayla?” Her eyes came up, a flash of recognition there. “Yes?” “Are you going to sign the contract or do you have more questions?” She picked up the pen sitting on top of the contracts that would bind the two of them together for the next six months. They would reevaluate the relationship at that point in time, but for the next six months, she was his. His bodyguard. His submissive. Bought and properly paid for. He would take care of her and she would give him what he needed. She signed with a flourish and sat back, a gleam of curiosity in her eyes. He was curious, too, and there was zero reason to not satisfy their curiosity. Hard and soft limits had been gone over. They would find their communication style as they went along. But first she should understand that he was in control. “Come sit on my lap.” She didn’t hesitate. She stood and turned, shifting so she could maneuver her way onto his lap. Her weight came down on him and he wrapped an arm around her waist. Damn but she made him feel big. He’d seen her take out a man twice her size, but sitting here in his lap she felt small and vulnerable, and fuck but that did it for him. He slid a hand along her knee, letting himself indulge in the silky-smooth feel of her skin against his palm. “Did you do as I asked?” He was well aware his voice had gone husky, deeper than normal. “Yes, Joshua.” She squirmed the tiniest bit, as though trying to find a comfortable position. It might be difficult for her because she was sitting right on his cock, and it was harder and thicker than he could ever remember it being. “How can I trust you?” This was all part of the game he loved. Here he could let go and play out the darker of his impulses—to control, to take, to possess. See. Want. Have. “You’ll have to check,” she replied. “Though shouldn’t we go inside?” He reached out and picked up his cell with his free hand, pushing one number and connecting to the security room. He put them on speaker. She needed to understand what she was up against in order for the game to be fair. “Landon?” “This is Burke,” the deep voice replied. “Shane’s on patrol. What can I do for you?” “Burke, I would like to fuck my submissive on the third-floor balcony. Is anyone watching us? Can you see any cameras pointed our way?” A low, masculine chuckle came across the line. “No, Mr. Hunt. And given the angle relative to the beach, you should enjoy your evening without worry. The only peepers I would worry about would be your next-door neighbor, and Jared is out for the night.” “I wouldn’t care if he wasn’t. Keep up the good work.” He hung up and his hand tightened. “I would prefer when we’re playing that you don’t question me like that. I know where I want to fuck you. I know when I want to fuck you, and I’m in charge. If I want you in the middle of a crowded freeway, your only response is a yes or a no. Not to question me.” She seemed to relax back against him, as though she was giving up the struggle and choosing to submit. “Yes, Joshua. Yes, I understand, and yes to the sex. Please.” He liked the breathy please and loved how she squirmed. Still, he wasn’t absolutely sure she’d obeyed him, and he was a man who required proof. He slid his hand up her thigh. “Spread your legs for me.” Her knees fell apart, and he could feel the heat from her core. He slipped a hand up until he made contact with her softest skin. No panties. Nothing but wet heat waiting for him, and it was obvious the play had cranked her up, too. His free hand eased one button on her shirt free, and then another and another until he could move in like a soldier conquering territory. No bra. Her breasts were like the rest of her. Soft and delicate. One nipple rolled against his palm, hardening then and there. “I can see you’ve been an obedient sub,” he said, his mouth against her ear. “You need to stay that way or there will be punishment. I’m not a sadist, Kayla. I truly don’t get off on your pain, but I will give it to you if you need it. I am a disciplinarian. I gain satisfaction from your obedience. In exchange, I’ll show you how good it can be to obey me.”

REVIEW:

4.25-4.5 stars
****

I loved this book! I think this is my favorite Masters and Mercenaries book so far! This is Kayla and Joshua's story. Joshua is a famous movie actor in Hollywood. The CIA thinks that he may have ties to a cartel drug lord, where another agent who was undercover has gone missing, so they contract Kayla to go undercover in Josh's household. Josh is looking for a submissive who can double as a bodyguard and be part of his security team. Kayla is the perfect fit for him. At first, Josh wants a very structured, formal, contracted D/s relationship with Kayla, but her funny, sweet quirkiness has him falling for her (and she for him). But problems from Josh's childhood pop back up to threaten his present and his happiness. And when Kayla's cover is blown and Josh finds out he has been lied to, will Josh push Kayla away for good or can he forgive her so they can have a happy future together?

I already loved Kayla from her part in previous books in this series and I was not at all disappointed. I adored Kayla in this book. She was smart and funny, sweet and so sunshiningly happy, but still a dangerous badass when she needed to be. I have a major girl crush on her. She is the best heroine that I have read in a long while. I also loved that she is an avid reader who writes letters to her favorite authors. She wrote authors like Rebecca Zanetti and mentioned that Kristen Ashley has a restraining order on her. It was hilarious! I liked Josh too. He had been through so much in his life and really deserved the happiness he found with Kay. I definitely felt the love and connection between them. They were awesome together- sexy and sweet. I wanted a bit more resolution at the end of the book. The epilogue is only 12 hours into the future. I wanted a further jump ahead epilogue and a bit more happy times between the couple after the final conflict. Still, this was a really good book, full of Lexi Blake's trademark romantic suspense, action, adventure, love and friendship.

Overall, I loved this book and thought it was a great addition to this series! Nobody Does It Better is a nuanced, detailed romantic suspense full of sexy, funny and emotional awesomeness. I look forward to more from the Masters and Mercenaries and Lexi Blake in the future!

NY Times and USA Today bestselling author Lexi Blake lives in North Texas with her husband, three kids, and the laziest rescue dog in the world. She began writing at a young age, concentrating on plays and journalism. It wasn’t until she started writing romance and urban fantasy that she found the stories of her heart. She likes to find humor in the strangest places and believes in happy endings no matter how odd the couple, threesome, or foursome may seem.

Excerpt:

She sank onto a chair, suddenly aware of the heaviness that pervaded every limb, exhaustion settling in. She crossed her arms on the table, lay her head down on them and closed her eyes…but visions of the day plagued her mind’s eye.
It was a catastrophe—there could be no other word that would adequately describe it. It had really begun a fortnight ago, in the early evening of Sankt Hans, the annual celebration of midsummer. The Livingstone clan had been preparing for a play, one written and produced by Duff. Duff fancied himself quite the actor, and he’d rallied a few members of the clan to join his theatrical troupe. There were six of them set to perform when they heard the warning horn from Old Donnie. He lived on the tip of the island just across the loch from Port Appin, and it was his job to sound the horn if anything or anyone should come to the island.
Everyone had frantically begun to gather up incriminating whisky jugs. “What of the play?” Duff had wailed unhappily.
It just so happened that Lottie’s horse, Stjerne, was still saddled from her participation in the pony races, and when she saw Norval and Bear Livingstone leap to their horses, she joined them. It was the way of things on Lismore—she was always in the thick of things.
She’d not been the least surprised to find Laird Campbell, his periwig tightly curled and overly powdered, skulking among the rabbits. It wasn’t his first attempt to find the stills. Naturally, Mr. Edwin MacColl, the chief of the clan who inhabited what the Livingstones considered to be the good side of their island, would accompany him.
Lottie had always liked Mr. MacCollas long as he stayed on his end of the island. He was a widower, his children grown and married with children of their own. He was older than Lottie’s father, but still had a broad chest and thick, snowy brows that slid up when he smiled wistfully at Lottie as he was wont to do.
But his visits to the north end had become all too frequent of late, and quite recently, he’d suggested to Bernt that Lottie might make him a good wife. “I’ve a nice house for her to keep, plenty of food for the table,” he’d suggested, apparently considering these two facts to be his better points of persuasion.
Lottie had not been surprised by the offer. Frankly, on an island where unmarried lassies were not plentiful, every man seemed to believe himself her perfect match, just as her mother had predicted, God rest her soul.
Her mother had warned Lottie of her allure to males. “You’re a beauty, lass, and men are drawn to beauty to their own detriment like moths to light, aye? You must no’ allow them to turn your head with bonny words and empty promises. You must be diligent in seeking the man who honors you for your heart and no’ your face, then, do you understand me? And beware your own father, lass—aye, he loves you, more than life, he does, but he’s easily persuaded by the promises of others.”

Review:

3 stars
***

This was an okay read for me. It has been awhile since I read a historical romance, but the blurb of this one sounded good so I gave it a shot. This is Lottie and Aulay's story. Aulay is a ship captain who carries cargo from port to port. Lottie's family, the Livingstones, make and sell illegal Scottish whiskey. When their laird finds out, they hatch a plan to take their whiskey by boat to sell it across the sea. But their ship runs into trouble and they have to be rescued by the nearest ship, which happens to be Aulay's. Lottie and the Livingstones trick Aulay and take over his ship, tying him and his men up as captives. They sail the ship themselves to try to get to a port to sell their whiskey. As they spend time on the ship, Lottie and Aulay develop an attraction to each other and find they like each other. There is a lot of adventure along the way but everything works out for the two to fall in love and have their HEA.

I felt like the beginning of the book was slow moving and hard to get into. The Scottish brogue was also hard to get used to reading. By the middle of the book, I started getting into the story and enjoying it. I was able to feel the love between Lottie and Aulay. But I felt like the end was anticlimactic. The couple never quite got where I needed them to be to feel like they had a strong love connection. There was a lot going on besides the romance. Lottie's brothers and their band of merry Livingstone men were silly. I don't know if they were supposed to be comic relief, but I didn't really enjoy them. I liked Lottie and Aulay in general. Lottie had made some mistakes in life, but she took responsibility and was contrite. I did think it was a bit funny that there was no talk about Lottie's virginity. Aulay is not her first, but he never questions or speaks about it with her at all, which I thought was unusual for the time period. Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but I didn't love it. The pacing was off a bit. I did like the overall premise of the story though and I may try this author again in the future.

Blurb

I’m a good girl.

I live by a code that can’t be bent or broken. It is my duty to my family to stay innocent and pure. To marry an Italian man. The stars are already aligned.

But Nikolai Kozlov re-writes my destiny with five simple words.

You belong to me now.

He's Russian mafiya. A thief. A skilled liar with no moral boundaries. He is everything I have been taught to hate. A man who stands for nothing. A man who takes what he wants without a second thought.

And what he wanted was me.

He thinks he controls my fate, but what he doesn’t know is, sometimes it’s the good girls you have to watch out for.

I’m a dangerous man.

I live by a code. The Vory code. It is my duty to my family to protect the brotherhood. To destroy anyone who threatens what we stand for, including her.

She’s a dancer. A beautiful little doll. My prisoner, and my new favorite puppet. This mafia princess thinks she has me under her spell, but in the end, she is simply collateral.

It’s a shame to destroy precious things.

But this is what bad men do.

Review:

3 stars
***

This was a pretty good book, but was a little too dark for my personal taste. Tanaka is a ballerina. She is the daughter of an Italian mobster and was raised very sheltered, knowing she would only be able to be a dancer until her father arranges a marriage for her. But before that can happen, her father finds himself in debt to a rival Russian mobster, Nikolai. Until her father can pay off his debt, Nikolai takes Tanaka as collateral and holds her captive in his mansion. I don't want to go into too much more detail about the story so as not to spoil anything, but I will say this book is full of heartache, betrayal, violence, suspense and, finally, love.

The characters names were kind of confusing to me, with all the similar nicknames. Tanaka (who is supposed to be Black and Italian but whose name sounds Japanese to me) is called Nakya and Niki as nicknames. And Nikolai is nicknamed Nika. I knew who was who, but it was kind of odd that the names were so similar.

Nikolai and Tanaka have a very volatile, sometimes violent relationship. I would classify it as love/hate, heavy on the hate. He chokes her multiple times. I understand when reading a mafia book that sometimes these guys act like this and are violent towards enemies, but Tanaka was innocent and never did anything to him. This continued far into the book, even after they begin falling for each other. Nikolai runs hot and cold throughout the book too. Just when I thought he was growing as a person, developing true feelings for her and letting her in, he would backslide. I don't know how she could ever trust him. There were several instances of questionable consent and borderline abuse, as well. Even at 96%, Tanaka still thinks he might kill her. There was so much that happened between them, and no real apologies, that I felt it was too much to come back from. It was hard for me to imagine and trust in their HEA.

Tanaka has some major issues, as well. With her dance career over, due to a mysterious sabotage resulting in a devastating injury right before she was taken by Nikolai, she feels out of control and like her life is over. She begins to control the only thing she can in this situation, by refusing to eat and purging. Nikolai did help her recover from her eating problems, by forcing her to be tube fed and see a psychologist. So that was one good thing he did, even though he still intended to possibly kill her afterwards.

There were also parts of this book that I really liked. I was definitely sucked into the story and couldn't put it down. The story was unique and interesting and the writing was engaging. The mysterious, suspenseful parts of the story were unpredictable and intriguing. I did feel the connection between Tanaka and Nikolai and, during their happy times together, I did feel their love. Overall, though, I felt like everything the couple went through together and put each other through was a little too dark and volatile for my personal taste. I definitely do recommend this book if you like a dark mafia read.

The first thing I always notice about a person is their posture. I was raised to believe that good posture conveys good manners, as well as respect for those around you. Nikolai carries his posture like a casual ‘f#ck you’ to everyone around him. There is no decorum in his leather jacket, jeans, or his haphazardly laced motorcycle boots. Everything he wears is black, but the small glimpse of skin beneath is a riot of colors. Tattoos cover every inch of his exposed skin, including his throat.
I’m not sure which is more offensive- the ink or the faux hawk atop his head. This is not the way you attend a ballet, nor is he the type of man I expect my father to keep company with.
“Tanaka.” He reaches for my hand and kisses it in a way that few men would ever dare to do in my father’s presence. “You dance beautifully.”
The words are unmistakably accented. Russian. And I’m struggling to maintain my composure while making sense of this situation. My father has always been protective of me. His own men know better than to speak to me or look at me, but for this stranger, somehow, it’s okay.
My manners, at least, are still intact, so I reply as I should. “You’ve seen me dance?”
Nikolai flashes a boyish smile in contrast to the deepness of his blue-green eyes. “I like to invest my time in the arts.”
