Excerpt from Chapter One

His lips move. I stare at them for a few breaths before I realize he’s talking. My hand tugs out my earbud again. “Sorry. Did you say something?” “What are you listening to?” he asks in a voice as smooth as his Mediterranean eyes. “That’s kind of a personal question. Like asking my underwear color.” He grins. It’s all kinds of wicked. “Personal?” He shrugs. “I don’t know about that. Depends on the song … and the color.” “Amy Shark, ‘Adore.’And red and silver polka dots.” “Mmm …” He nods slowly. “Good choice.” “The song?” I bite the corner of my lower lip to control my grin. “The underwear.” My heart wakes up as if to say, “Whoa, is something going on here I should know about?” “Wanna see mine?” My eyebrows lift a fraction. “Your underwear?” He digs his phone out of his front pocket. “Do I look like a perv? My song.” Damn. He’s good. My tummy joins in on the little dance happening inside of me. Twisting his wrist, he shows me his phone screen. “Apocalyptica, ‘Nothing Else Matters.’ Hmm … that’s unexpected.” I let my gaze fall into his, a dangerous place to be. “You going to Coachella?” He nods several times, glancing over the seats to the road before us. “I’m working there.” “Oh, cool. Doing what?” He inspects my hair. I’d planned on changing clothes and doing something a bit more original with my crazy, dark auburn hair than a messy braid over one shoulder, but sushi dad took away my hotel room. Sexy stranger grins like either my question or my messy hair pleases him. “I’m an in-house tech—audio, lighting, video.” Dear God, he’s the full package, especially when that grin of his grows as I continue to violate him with my eyes. Maybe it’s just the lollipop I had on my way to the hotel. Everything seems aesthetically pleasing when I’m a little high. “So, I’ll know who to blame if the sound is a bit off while one of my favorite bands performs.” “You’ll know who to thank when it isn’t.” He leans toward the middle of the backseat. I follow his lead because I’m curious if he smells as good as he looks. “But I get this feeling that in your state, everything will sound good.” Ignoring his whispered accusation that I’m high, I sniff. “You smell like lemon.” He sticks his tongue out, revealing a half-melted lemon drop. I grin as we sit straight again. “Last year my mom brought back lemon drops from the Limoncello factory in Sorrento. They were amazing.” Sucking more intensely on his sour goodness, he nods slowly. “I’m sure they were. Sadly, I don’t think my lemon drop was made in Italy.” “That is incredibly sad.” He chuckles. Is he laughing at me? “Nice tats.” He nods to my arms. Holding them out, I admire my art. “They’re henna, like me.” “Like you?” “Yes. My name is Henna. And these will be much more intense tomorrow.” “Like you?” His teeth scrape along his bottom lip. It’s ridiculously sexy. “Are you flirting with me?” He chuckles. “We met less than five minutes ago. I have a little more tact than that.” “Tact? Like asking the color of my underwear?” He runs his hands over the legs of his jeans. Is he sweating? Am I making him sweat? That possibility gives me a whole other kind of high. “I didn’t ask. You freely offered that information. Besides, I have rules about flirting.” “Well, I despise rules, but you must share your rules anyway.” “Never flirt with someone who is not sober.” He stares out his window like his rule is the end of our friendly conversation. “Sober? Dude, this is as sober as I get.” Leaning forward, I shove down the waist of my shorts in back, exposing a long L-shaped scar. He glances over, forehead wrinkled. “If I sit too long or stand too long or do anything too long, life kinda sucks. But a little high can go a long way with making said life a lot less sucky.” Sitting back, I exhale. Sexy stranger seems at a loss for words. “Tell me, tech guy, do you have a name?” The driver stops at the crowded entrance. “Thank you,” we say while getting out of the car.

I’m Leo Landry, one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the nation, and the New York Mavericks’ first round draft pick.

No problem.
All I’ve got to do is focus, right?
Too bad life’s got other plans.
Blond hair, long lashes, and criminal blue eyes, there’s a pint-sized bombshell that I can’t stop thinking about.
I don’t even know her name, but she’s completely screwing up my game plan.

This was a pretty good book. 4th and Girl is Leo and Gemma's story. Leo is the rookie on the Mavericks pro football team. He meets Gemma when she is working a temp job collecting the players' urine samples for testing. When she is flustered by Leo, she accidentally spills his pee cup on herself and gets fired. Neither of them can forget about each other and Leo tries to find Gemma, but he doesn't even know her name. The two meet again later by chance and begin a relationship. There are some funny and sweet moments and they fall for each other.

I liked Leo and Gemma. They were cute together. I did think it took a little too long for them to get together. They met once at 3% and didn't meet again until 34%. I thought the chemistry was only okay and I'm not sure I fully felt the love between them. The book felt a little short, probably because it took awhile for them to meet again. I felt like there were a few plot holes that were never fully explained, like what was the deal with Gemma's weird friend Abby or why Leo pushed Gemma so hard to sing. Gemma had dreams of being a musician and a love of music, but I didn't really feel that she had a love of performing, so I didn't get that. I felt the book in general lacked a little depth and emotion. Also, it is very much a HFN, with I love you's exchanged in the last few pages and no real plans for the future made or even discussion about relationship status (although there is a good epilogue).

Still, while this is not my favorite Max Monroe book, it is still an enjoyable, easy read. It was cute and entertaining. I liked Leo and Gemma, as well as catching up with the other couples from the series. I'm still a Max Monroe fan and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Excerpt:

In my opinion, in football, there isn’t a more badass position than shutdown cornerback. What makes my position so badass? Well, I have to be agile and quick and have a natural instinct for the game. My footwork has to be on point, and my speed has to be unmatched. I have to cover, read, adjust, and break on the ball. This position, my position, is one of the biggest anchors of pass defense plays. What does all of that football lingo mean? It means I’m vital. It means I’m the guy who will stop a quarterback’s touchdown pass. I’m the man who won’t let the best wide receivers in the league get their greedy hands on the ball. Last year, my college record was nearly unheard of. I held opposing QBs to a 47.9 rating when they tried to throw the ball to the man I was covering. Basically, I was the badass in one of the toughest positions in the league. And now, as one of the newest first-round draft picks for the New York Mavericks, I’m the guy with everything to prove. I can either be the big hero, or I can be the guy who loses the fucking game. My reputation is on the line, my nearly flawless career in college taunting me in the background to live up to it, and if there’s one thing I need to do, it’s focus. But life’s got other plans. I should have my mind on my money—and my money on my mind—but the only thing I can seem to think of these days is the mystery girl I met at one of the team’s very first group activities. Blond hair. Long lashes. Criminally blue eyes. She’s petite and awkward, and she’s completely fucking up the plan. But it’s too late to second-guess. And it’s sure as fuck too late to go back. Once my mind is fixated on something, there’s no stopping me. I have my eye on the bombshell prize, and I won’t settle for anything less than victory. Good thing I’m at my best when the pressure’s on.

From New York Times bestselling author Kim Karr comes a brand new dramatic comedy of forbidden love and second chances.

Life is short. Time is fast. No replay. No rewind. That’s my motto.

And there’s nothing wrong with that. That is until the day I turn 27 and everything changes. Suddenly, I’m expected to… 1) Move back to my hometown. 2) Stop partying. 3) Take over my family’s winery. 4) And get married. Wait! What? That last one I didn’t see coming. I’m Tyler Justin Ryan Holiday III, Northern California’s most eligible bachelor, and I don’t do monogamy. It’s just a wild guess but I’d have to say that monogamy isn’t going to do me, either. My grandmother won’t listen to a word I have to say on the matter. And since the old battle-axe is still at the helm of my legacy, it’s not like I can blow her off. However, when she tells me whom she thinks will make the perfect bride, and then subsequently drops me at said bride’s door, I nearly lose my f*cking mind. Sure, dear old granny tries to sugarcoat the situation with a lot of glitz and glamour, but there’s no turning ash into fairy dust. Paris Elizabeth Hollis Fairchild isn’t only the ultimate party girl and terrible wife material, she’s also my sworn enemy. We loathe each other. We have good reason. And it isn’t because our families are competitors. Needless to say, I’m not surprised when the she-devil slams the door in my face—but it still pisses me off. Apparently, she doesn’t know me as well as she thinks. Doesn’t understand I’ve changed. Doesn’t realize her rejection only spurs me on—makes me want to tame her, claim her, make her mine. Then again, at 27 I’m no longer a lovesick teenager. I’m a grown-ass man with a big ego and an even bigger…never mind. Paris says she doesn’t want to know how big I am, in any sense of the word. I don’t believe her. Either way, it doesn’t matter. She’s a challenge I can’t resist. A temptation I can’t ignore. The woman I must have. We haven’t spoken in ten years but mark my words, she and I will be doing that and a hell of a lot more—very soon. Life is short. Time is fast. Replay. Rewind. That’s my new motto. And there’s no sugarcoating that.

Review:

3 stars.

This was a pretty good book. This is Tyler and Paris's book. Tyler and Paris were both spoiled, rich kids from families who owned wineries when they met in high school. They had a very intense, but short relationship that ended terribly when something happened between them. Now, it is ten years later, Tyler has been a playboy with no ambition, waiting to reach the age where he inherits the family winery so he can run it. When he reaches that age, he finds out the winery is doing poorly and may go out of business unless he can save it. His step-grandmother, who has been running the winery, tells him to marry Paris and use her winery's assets to help save his winery. But Tyler and Paris hate each other. She is not apt to help him. Still, when they meet again, he is still attracted to her and can't keep his hands to himself. He tries to convince her that marrying him is the best option for them both.

This book is a quick read and the first book in a three book serial. While I liked this book in general, I had a few issues with it. I didn't really like Tyler for most of the book. He is a a$$ of epic proportions and a manwhore without one pleasant thing to say. We only get his POV for the first third of the book and it was hard to hang in there for me. Even once we got Paris's POV, I didn't like her that much either.  They still hate each other from their blow up in high school, which it is not revealed to us what actually happened yet. I think it would have helped a lot to know what happened because we don't know if they were ever in love. I needed that context to make me care about the characters. I definitely didn't like the hate vibe they had going on between them.  Also, it took me until half way through the book before I started feeling any chemistry between them or start liking either of them at all. The book did get better as it went a long. I did like them both better as the book neared the end. The book is short, but from the blurb, I still expected more. I had to struggle to get through the book. But I do like the story and I'm hoping the characters begin to become more easy to identify with and likeable as the series continues. Also, be aware there is a cliffhanger.

So, while I didn't totally love this book, I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes next and hoping Tyler and Paris become characters I like more.

BLURB

A hot summer night is perfect for feeling your way in the dark…
For urban-legend hunter and television host Gabe Powers, it’s business—investigate the most notorious haunted places in Savannah. Then he meets his new sound engineer, a dewy Georgia peach who may just turn this gig into (im)pure pleasure. All it takes is one night for them to conjure floor-rattling, wall-banging moans…but they’re not from the ghosts.
Blame the rippling abs, the cocky swagger, the granite jawline, the whole muscle-bulging package, but Gabe is bringing out good-girl Lily Jameson’s dirty side. Damn her code-of-conduct contract—this isn’t just a molten-hot fling.
There’s just one kink in the relationship they’ve been avoiding: soon they’ll be going their separate ways. Lily’s home is in Savannah, and Gabe is a globe-trotter at heart. For them to be together, they’ll both have to upend their so-very-different worlds and face their fears in the process. And suddenly things don’t feel so Georgia peachy keen at all.

EXCERPT

He wrapped his arms around me, sliding one hand up along the back of my neck to keep me close. Running his thumb down my cheek, he held my hair back from my face. The laughter and playfulness were gone. Now he was back where I’d seen him in the bedroom. Greedy and serious. His palm grasped my tush in a delightfully possessive way. “Ouija speaks the truth. I do want you. So bad.”
“Me too,” I whispered back, but then I realized how confusing that sounded. “I mean, I want you. Not I want—”
He kissed me to shut me up. His hands gripped my body, and his tongue swept mine aside. Straddling him on my knees on the sofa, I felt him hard underneath me. I tipped my hips into him, with nothing but my panties and his chinos between us. This kiss was different than the one in the bedroom earlier. This was like a slow drizzle of caramel all through me. Just as the room began to spin, and just as I started to reach for his belt, he broke us apart, pulling my head back slightly with his fingers knotted into my hair. He nudged my cheek with his nose and said, “I’m gonna take you upstairs, Lily. And rock your fucking world.”

REVIEW:

4.5 stars
****

This is such a good book! Super sweet and oh-so-swoony! This is Gabe and Lily's book. Gabe is a reality tv star. He stars in a show where he travels the world and does crazy adventures. He is shooting a pilot for a new ghost themed show, so he heads to Savannah for a few days to check out local haunts. There he meets Lily on the Fourth of July and there is fireworks between them. They meet at a park where she accidentally clocks him with a microphone and it is near-love at first sight. Lily owns a sound production company and Gabe's producer hires her to work with him in setting up sound recording in the haunted house he is staying in. As the two work together and spend time together, they fall for each other. They have to figure out how to make a relationship work between them when he is a world traveler and she is just a small town girl.

I loved Gabe and Lily. Gabe was such a good guy. Sexy, sweet and so swoony in the way he adored Lily. She was fun and sweet too. Lily had relatable insecurities and fears, which it was great to see her overcome. I loved the way they fell in love what seemed like gradually, but also by spending a lot of time together over a short period of time. I loved the little gifts they gave each other. They were just perfect together and fit together so well. The writing was good and the story was unique and original. This book was so romantic and fun. It was funny, sexy, and sweet. There are quirky characters and a wacky talking parrot. I loved the Savannah, GA setting and all the descriptions of local color. I loved the reality adventure show and ghost hunting aspect. This book is not a paranormal book but the ghost hunting adventures the couple went on her so fun and hilarious.

I say this every time, but I love everything Nicola Rendell writes. Her writing style and her stories are the very best match for me as a reader. She is my very fave and I just love and fully connect to her books so well. It's hard to think of what else to say. I just think this book is near perfection. The perfect combination of sexy, sweet and funny. I can't wait to see what Ms. Rendell comes up with next!

If Kim’s not writing, you can find her wandering through antique stores with her husband, trying out new fitness classes with her sons, venturing out to new coffee shops with her daughter, or with her nose stuck in a book.

Review:

3 stars
***

I really enjoyed book one in this trilogy, Perversion, but I didn't quite enjoy this book as much. Possession is the second book in the trilogy and the continuation of Grim and Tricks/ Emma Jean's story. The previous book left us with a big cliffhanger and this book picks up right there, full speed ahead. I can't go much into the plot without spoiling the story so I'll leave it at that.

I still love the world Ms. Frazier has built in this series. I like Emma Jean and Grim. This book is fast paced and action filled, with a lot crammed into a short book. At times I felt the drama was OTT, which kept me from feeling a strong connection to the characters. The pace was so fast I didn't feel the emotions like I expected to. There are several triggers: a good bit of rape, gang rape, torture, and a f/f non-con scene that I did not enjoy at all. I felt that scene was possibly added just for shock value and did not need to be so detailed and descriptive. Not many problems were solved in the book, only more problems made for the couple. I enjoyed the story in general, but hope that the final book has more happier times and less darkness. Grim and Tricks have definitely got their hands full in getting themselves out of trouble in the final book.

Overall, while this book isn't my favorite in the series, I still enjoyed it. I can't wait to see how Ms. Frazier wraps it up!

Excerpt:

Bethany nods to the box, again pressing her finger to her lips. “We will know more when you’re assigned a judge. Until then, we will just have to wait,” she says loudly. She points with her eyes to the item in my hand, then leaves. The object I’m holding is a rock with a piece of paper attached to it by a rubber band. I pull the paper free and flip it over. It’s a note. Stay by the glass, motherfucker! Whatever you do, don’t turn around. PS-You look nice today. Prison blue suits you. The one-piece scratchy uniform I’m wearing is bright orange. What the fuck is all this about? I peer out from my cell. There’s no one in the room now. Not even the janitor. The security camera high in the corner across from my cell, the one that’s usually pointed directly at me, is now facing down toward the floor. Whatever you do, don’t turn around. Okay, so I won’t turn around completely, but curiosity leads me to risk a glance over my shoulder. It’s just a wall. An empty blank wall. BOOM. BOOOOOM! An empty blank wall...that just exploded. The sound resonates through my eardrums. I duck and cover my head with my hands as pieces of cement rain down into the cell. Dust coats my hair and the back of my neck. After a few beats, I stand, waving away the plumes of the aftermath. Through the debris, I can just barely make out headlights. It’s a truck with a battering bar attached to the hood. “All aboard! This train is leaving the motherfucking station. Literally!” shouts a voice. I can’t see who it is through the windshield which is shrouded in what remains of my cell. I don’t have time to ask any questions of the mystery voice. There’s no time to question anything. The passenger door flies open. Two officers appear behind me. One fumbles with the cell keys while the other shouts at him to move faster. It won’t be fast enough. I leap into the truck and slam the door. The tires spin in place for a few seconds until they finally grip the concrete. My head hits the headliner as we reverse over the broken bricks until we’re clear of them and are able to make forward motion. It isn’t until we’re through the field and on the road when I finally get a good look of my getaway driver. “Preppy?” I ask. “What the fuck are you doing here?” Preppy may not be part of any official organization, but he runs a tight ship over in Logan’s Beach. Belly and I have worked with him and his friend King a few times in the past. I haven’t seen Preppy since before he was thought to be dead only to later be rescued from an underground cave where he was held captive for the better part of a year. “Grim? Fuck, I thought I was rescuing Bear. Get the fuck out,” he teases. “Just kidding. If Bear was locked up I wouldn’t help him escape. That fucker could use some ‘me time’ to contemplate his grumpy nature.” He holds the wheel with one hand and straightens his signature bowtie with the other. His white dress shirt is rolled up to his elbows revealing arms heavily covered with both tattoos and angry jagged scars. He lights a joint and tugs on the wheel, making a sharp turn off the road into a dark heavily wooded area. When we’ve made it in far enough to be fully camouflaged by trees and brush, Preppy kills the engine. He passes me the joint, and I take a much-needed hit, holding the smoke for as long as I can before slowly exhaling. “Thanks, man. How the fuck did you get sucked into this?” Preppy types out a text on his phone, then sets it back in the console. “Bethany. I owed her a favor. She got my boy, Bo, out of some trouble recently.” “Isn’t your kid like ten now?” I ask. “What kind of trouble can a ten-year-old get into that needs Bethany’s kind of help?” “He’s eight,” Preppy corrects. “And my boy catches the kind of trouble most kids his age don’t know is out there to catch. My girls are easier. Twin toddlers. Miley and Taylor. The three of them, along with their mama, are the loves of my fucked-up life. Bo’s a good kid. He’s just…well, his brain arrow doesn’t exactly shoot straight. Its target is usually more…” Preppy shapes his hand like an arrow aimed at the windshield, then changes the aim to me. “Human.” He drops his hand. “And the incident in question wasn’t that bad. It may or may not have had something to do with the unfortunate disappearance of a certain…” He waves the rest of his sentence away like there’s a gnat flying around his head. “Let’s just say he’s grounded. VERY grounded. For life. Or like a week. Minimum a few days. Or a day. Maybe, an hour or two. Poor kid. Maybe, I’ll just take him to the movies.” He sighs. “You’ll see. Wait until you’ve got some sex trophies of your own. You’ll understand.” Kids. I’ve never thought of myself with a kid before. I picture Tricks holding a baby in her arms. Our baby. Much to my surprise, I don’t fucking hate it. Although, the thought isn’t helpful to my current situation and only makes me more impatient and enraged. One thing at a fucking time. Sirens wail through the night. Preppy remains cool and calm like he’s driving a parade float down main street, and not at all like he’s running from the law with a fugitive. Blue and red flashes light up the woods. After a few seconds, the vehicles pass, and both the lights and sirens fade off into the distance. “That’s our bat signal. Let’s get you the fuck outta here so I can get home to the missus and eat her cookies.” Preppy pauses, probably realizing his odd choice of words. “I do actually mean cookies. Dre makes a mean batch of chocolate chip.” I stare silently out at the passing trees. “I’m going to eat her pussy, too. You know, after the other kind of cookies. Just so we’re clear.” “Thanks, man. We’re clear. And if you ever need anything and I’m not dead or serving time, I’m there,” I assure him. I mean it. I owe him a debt. A huge one. “Hhhhmmm,” he considers, taking the joint I pass him. “How do you feel about babysitting?” I smile at his joke until I look over at Preppy only to see he’s not doing the same. In fact, it’s the only time in my life I’d ever seen him with a straight face. “I uh…” He looks straight ahead through the scratched and broken windshield. Bits of concrete from our escape attempt cover the dashboard, and some of it is lodged into the glass. “Never mind. You can do me one favor, though.” “Anything within my power. It’s yours.” “Don’t tell King about this,” he says. It comes out as a sheepish high-pitched question. “Why? He wouldn’t want to know that you broke me out?” King was a friend of Belly’s and a good ally to Bedlam. It wouldn’t make sense that he’d be against helping me. I’d do the same for any of them if the roles were reversed. Preppy shakes his head. “Oh no, he knows I broke you out. I just sent him a text to tell him it’s over. The grand escape is complete.” He steps on the gas. “But he don’t gotta know I used his truck to do it.”
