Review: Mastering Her Senses by Laura Kaye + Review Tour

Decadent… Sensual… Forbidden…

12 Masters. 12 Desires. 12 Fantasies Come to Life. Meet the Masters of Blasphemy…

About MASTERING HER SENSES (Blasphemy #2, 2/21/17):

12 Masters. Infinite fantasies. Welcome to Blasphemy…

He wants to dominate her senses—and her heart…

Quinton Ross has always been a thrill-seeker—so it’s no surprise that he’s drawn to extremes in the bedroom and at his BDSM club, Blasphemy, where he creates sense- depriving scenarios that blow submissives’ minds. Now if he could just find one who needs the rush as much as him…

When an accident leaves Cassia Locke with a paralyzing fear of the dark, she’ll try anything to get help. Ready to fight, she knows just who to ask for help—the hard-bodied, funny-as-hell Dom she’d always crushed on—and once stood up.

Quinton is shocked and a little leery to see Cassia, but he can’t pass up the chance to dominate the alluring little sub this time. Introducing her to sensory deprivation becomes his new favorite obsession, and watching her fight fear is its own thrill. But when doubt threatens to send her running again, Quinton must find a way to master her senses—and her heart.

My Review:

4 stars. This was a good book! I have read and enjoyed the other two books in this series, but this one is my favorite so far. This is Cassia and Master Quinton's story. Quinton is one of the 12 Masters/co-owners at Blasphemy BDSM club. He is a light hearted, charming thrill-seeker. He especially likes scenes that include sensory deprivation. He has wanted to find a sub to have a relationship with for awhile, but has had a hard time finding someone who is as fun-loving and adventurous as he is that he connects to as much outside of the club. Quinton met Cassia at Blasphemy and they seemed to feel a connection. They made a date to meet up and scene together at the club, but Cassia never showed up and hasn't been seen at the club since. Now, two years later, Cassia is back at Blasphemy. Quinton is still attracted to her but wants to know why she stood him up and never returned. Cassia is a scientist that studies caves and, on the night that she was supposed to meet up with Quinton, she had an accident that left her trapped for days in the dark. Ever since then, she has been scared of the dark. Now she is back at Blasphemy hoping to face her fears using sensory deprivation. Quinton is happy to see her again and help her out. As they work through her fears together, they find that they have as much in common in the club as out of out it and they fall in love.

I really liked both Quinton and Cassia. They are both adventurous, fun loving people. I felt that they had the best connection and were the best couple of the series so far. They were light-hearted and didn't take their play at Blasphemy or their rules overly serious. It was sweet to see how Quinton cared for Cassia and helped her get over her fears. The sensory deprivation scenes were interesting and sexy. I also enjoyed seeing them learn how to deal with their relationship outside of the club and work out what their boundaries were. There was no big blow up or angstyness to make things harder on them either.

Overall, I really enjoyed watching Quinton and Cassia's relationship develop and seeing them fall in love. I definitely look forward to more from the Blasphemy series and Laura Kaye!

EXCERPT:

She turned back to him. “You seem to have a good deal of stamina.” “Amelie…Mistress, I don’t think you’re getting’ that I seriously find you not hard on the eyes.” She bent closer, as intended for this part of their session, some of her fair falling on his chest in another caress. She did this letting her amusement show, if not all of the emotion she felt at his compliment. “I wonder, monchou, if you think you can butter me up with compliments.” “I don’t know. Maybe. Though not sure why I’d bother since I didn’t give you one and you just made me shoot a huge-ass load the like that have never come from my cock.” “And he gives another compliment,” she said through a smile. “You earn it, I’ll say it, he replied, his lips twitching. “That is, if I’m physically capable of speech.” She was still smiling when she reached out a hand and delicately traced circles around his nipple. His eyes darkened. Her good humor increased. “You’re of course aware I should do something about you being so audaciously cheeky.” Another darkness crossed his face. “What?” “I shouldn’t allow you to be cheeky with me.” “Cheeky?” “Impudent,” she explained. The look fled. “You mean, in uppity, hot-chick speak, a wise-ass.” Amelie couldn’t help it, she laughed softly. “She’s got a pretty laugh, too, to go with that pretty accent,” he murmured and she saw his eyes on her lips. I could get lost in this one, she thought. Lost and never found.

About Kristen Ashley: Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Cover Reveal: Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis + Excerpt

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes the next sexy, standalone novel in the Heartbreaker Bay series...

About CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE:

Meet cute...
Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry...
Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot—chemistry he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself... just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener…just because she “gets” Spencer immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.
Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

      EXCERPT:

The bathroom door opened, and even better than his fantasy, Colbie emerged from a cloud of steam, her willowy body wrapped in one of his towels, her exposed skin gleaming and dewy damp. Her hair had been piled on top of her head, but wavy strands had escaped, clinging to her neck and shoulders. He couldn’t tear his gaze off of her. There was just something so uncalculated about her, so . . . natural and easy. She was like a beacon to him, which was both crazy and more than a little terrifying. Clearly not seeing him against the wall, she moved with an effortless grace to the suitcase she’d left at the door. Bending low enough to give him a near heart attack, she rifled through her things, mumbling to herself that she should’ve researched more about how to be a normal person instead of how to kill someone with an everyday object. “Do you kill a lot of people, then?” Spence asked. “Motherforker!” she said with a startled squeak of surprise, whirling to face him, almost losing her grip on the towel. Five days a week, Spence worked out hard in this gym. Mostly to outrun his demons, but the upside was he could run miles without losing his breath. But he lost his breath now. And that wasn’t his body’s only reaction.

Review: Hard Rules by Lisa Renee Jones

Hard Rules by Lisa Renee Jones

****

4-4.25 stars

This was really good! Beware of the cliffhanger, though. I knew it was coming, so I was okay with it. Just know going in, that it's not a complete story. It reads like a serial. But I was wrapped up in the story so much that I didn't care.

This is Emily and Shane's story. Shane is in a fierce battle with his father and brother over control of their family company. Shane's father is dying and his brother is dragging the company into illegal activities. Shane has left his job as a lawyer to come fight his family to push the company towards the legal side of business. He meets Emily is a coffee shop and is intrigued. She is clearly on the run from something or someone. It is not revealed yet who or what. She just moved to Denver with hardly any belongings and a burner phone. She gets a job at Shane's family company, unknowingly. Shane and Emily feel a deep connection to each other and begin a relationship despite both of their misgivings to drag each other into their problems. But Shane's family and their criminal activities and Emily's past look like they are going to put a big wrench into their burgeoning feelings for each other.

I really liked both Emily and Shane. They are both really good characters. You can tell that they are both good people caught up in bad circumstances. We don't know what Emily is running from or much about her past, but we know she is not a "bad guy". Ms. Jones is very good at creating chemistry and connection, a sense of suspense and sexiness, and great complex characters. Her writing is so good. There was not a lot revealed in the story. It is very mysterious and not a lot of action happened, but I was still enthralled.

Overall, this was a very good start to a serious and I can't wait to find out more about Emily and see her relationship with Shane develop. Luckily, book 2, Damage Control, releases today 2/21!

Review: Something Borrowed by Eve Dangerfield

Something Borrowed by Eve Dangerfield

****

4 stars

This was a good book! An enemy-to-lovers story, this book is the story of Elle and Jackson. Years ago, Elle met Jackson when she was running a company retreat at the wildlife conservation center where she works. Jackson, driving the company van, practically ran her over. He was cocky and kind of an ass, but she was oddly attracted to him, despite that. But Jackson screwed up with Elle big time and she has hated him ever since. But that same day, Elle's best friend Tory met Jackson's best friend a co-worker Ben. They began dating and are now getting married. Elle and Jackson are stuck in Bali together for a week. Jackson sees this as his chance to try again with Elle. But Elle resists because of how much Jackson hurt her in the past. Over the wedding trip, Jackson proves how sorry he is and how perfect they are together by putting himself at her mercy.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I thought it was going to be a kind of light and fluffy rom-com, just based on the title and the blurb. But I should have known to expect more. All of Eve Dangerfield's books have been so unique and with great depth of emotion. Her characters are complicated with lots of layers and also very real.

Elle is a very strong woman. She has not had an easy life. She is full of sass and sarcasm. She doesn't let a lot of people in and she doesn't really care what people think of her for the most part. But she does have a secret that she holds close and that is that she is dominant in relationships and in the bedroom. She is scared to fully be herself because she has been rebuffed in the past. Men often want the sexual part of a relationship with her, but not long term and not the emotional part. So she has built an armor around herself.

Jackson was going through a very hard time when he met Elle. Because of some deaths in his family, he was drinking too much, possibly even was an alcoholic, and engaged in destructive behaviors with women. He could be an ass and he screwed up big time with Elle, but he realized it and saw her for the great catch that she was, so he changed his life. He became a better person, quit drinking, and when the time was right, he took the chance to pursue Elle. He was also very cocky, charming guy. He didn't come off as submissive at all, and I don't think he would ever be submissive to anyone but Elle. He loved Elle so much. Even though, she wasn't perfect, Jackson saw her as perfect for him.

Jackson was willing to do anything to get Elle. He saw her as the one woman for him and he put himself at her mercy, in all ways. Elle was cruel at times. She put him to the test for sure. But over the course of their week together, Jackson proved that he was the perfect match for Elle. He was her unicorn. Elle was able to fully be herself with him and Jackson loved who she was in all ways.

This book was funny, emotional and sexy! I enjoyed Elle and Jackson's journey to love together. I am definitely looking forward to more from Eve Dangerfield!

Review: Sex Says by Max Monroe

Sex Says by Max Monroe

****

4 stars

I have been a fan of the secret duo that writes as Max Monroe since I read their first book Tapping the Billionaire and then devoured the rest of the Billionaire Bad Boys series. I loved that series for it's funny but real characters and their sexy and emotional stories. Sex Says is their first standalone book and is  different than the Billionaire Bad Boys series in that it wasn't as rom-com-ish.  But it was still a very good book. This is Lola and Reed's story. Lola Sexton is a romance and sex advice columnist for a newspaper in San Francisco. Reed is the kind of guy who likes variety. He takes temporary jobs doing things he thinks are interesting and changes jobs every few weeks. One day he reads Lola's column, Sex Says, and it strikes a cord with him. He films a rebuttal to her point of view and posts it on Youtube. He doesn't think anything more about it or care who watches it. But Lola sees it and it makes her mad. So she confronts Reed and they begin communicating by email, which leads to Reed becoming smitten with Lola's personality, and then leads to him pursuing her and them starting a relationship. Both of them are non-traditional people without a lot of relationship experience, so it takes them awhile to figure out how a long-term relationship is going to work in their case. But I adored the way they made it work for them.

I really liked both Lola and Reed. Both were really interesting, smart, layered characters. They are both very original characters from most romance books. Lola was quirky and didn't care what people thought about her. She loves her job as a columnist and she does crazy things like roller skate to work, when she can barely skate without falling down. Reed is a different sort of hero. He is very laid back and he is a philosophical thinker. He loves to people watch and learn things about people through observation. He meets and is fascinated by Lola. He has never met anyone like her and is soon smitten. Reed baits her and kind of waits for her to come to him and make the first move. He is so sexy though. Both of them live non-traditional lives in relation to their jobs and they are happy that way. The romance is slow burn (first kiss at 49%). They start off as enemies (in Lola's mind) and then become friends and then lovers. Because of this, I felt like the book started slow and took me awhile to get into, but once it took off and I understood the characters' personalities, I really enjoyed it. There are so many quirky little touches, (ie. the puppets!), that I just loved too.

All in all, I did really enjoy this book and I definitely look forward to more from the mysterious duo of Max Monroe!

Sarah stands up and presses her lips against mine. And it’s so unexpected, so surprising—I freeze up. But only for a moment. As her mouth gently moves over mine, I begin to thaw. She’s so fucking soft, her taste so very sweet. The kiss is almost chaste—at least it’s the most chaste I’ve ever had. Unpracticed. And yet, it still manages to make my heart pound against my ribs like an animal in a cage. “What are you doing?” I whisper, when she pulls back just a little. “I’m distracting you.” She looks up at me uncertainly. From behind those ridiculously prim little glasses with those big, dark eyes that could bring me to my knees. “Is it working?” My tongue traces my lower lip, craving more of her. “I’m not sure. Keep trying—I’ll let you know.” She smiles quick and relieved . . . and then she reaches back up, wraps her arms about my neck, and kisses me. Her two lips envelop my lower one, then the upper, all eager, pleasing sweetness. My hands find Sarah’s lower back and I pull her in close, tight against me. Slowly, I open my mouth and she mirrors my movement, opening for me. And it’s good. So very, very good. It’s like my blood has turned to gasoline, and the touch of her wet, warm tongue is the spark. I delve deeper, kiss her harder—more demanding—taking the lead. I cup her head in my hands, holding her still while I plunge and devour. A moan seeps from her lips and I devour that too. But then, breathing harshly, I tear my mouth away. “Sarah, maybe we shouldn’t. Maybe we should just—” “I’m sick of being afraid, Henry. And I’m so tired of being alive . . . but not really living. I’ve wanted this for a long time. I want . . . you.” It’s only then that hesitation dims her eyes. “Do you want me too?” I grip her arms. “More than I’ve wanted anything or anyone in my entire life.” She takes my hands in hers, lifts them and presses my palms to her breasts. They’re soft and full and absolutely perfect. “Show me.” Beneath her robe, her bedclothes are paper thin. I trace my thumbs across her nipples, feeling them harden and peak. I want to suck on them until she’s mindless. I want to lick every inch of her skin and watch her flush with desire. I wrap my arms around Sarah and lift her right off her feet. With a groan, my mouth is back to hers. Her small pretty hands cup my jaw as I carry her toward the bed. I stop against a wall on the way, knocking a frame sideways, lifting her leg in one hand and wrapping it around my hip so I can thrust against her. There’s so much I know—deviant, filthy, lovely moves. And I want to teach her every damn one.

THE CAD

Bryan Leech is a cad.
Or, he *was* a cad.
No one is quite certain.
Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.
The only problem is, no one believes him.

THE CO-ED

Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favorite cousin, she’s finally managed to put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.

For a man used to living in the shadows, the idea of spending his days in the sun is nothing short of terrifying. When Dixie and Church find themselves caught up in a homecoming overshadowed with lies and danger, Dixie realizes that while falling in love is easy, loving takes a whole lot more work…especially when Mr. Right thinks he’s all wrong for you.

EXCERPT:

Church

She kissed me.

Her lips touched mine and she destroyed me. This tiny ray of light that seemed determined to chase the darkness inside of me away unraveled me with nothing more than the brush of her very soft lips against mine.

I should’ve pulled away, either that or gone all in. The attraction between us was only going to end one way, with me inside of her as we scorched through one another, so a real kiss with tongues and teeth and grabbing hands was inevitable, especially if she was holding the door wide open in invitation. I was already struggling with the friend thing and this wasn’t helping at all. I stood there, holding her, feeling her as she rubbed her mouth over mine, the barest hint of pressure as she took a taste, as she feathered her lips against mine like she was trying to memorize the shape, the feel, the flavor of them. It was the singularly softest touch I’d ever experienced and yet it had the power to make my knees weak and my blood pop with a desire so sharp it felt like it could pierce right through my skin.

Her hand cradled my jaw, her fingers shaking with some of the same things I was feeling. This thing that lived between us was hungry and tired of being ignored. It buzzed around us, electric and hot, refusing to be cooled by the chill in the night air that surrounded us. If we weren’t careful the passion that was hungry and needy between us would consume us, devour us, and leave us nothing more than hollow husks filled with fading satisfaction and jagged disenchantment because no matter how good we were together it couldn’t and wouldn’t last. I didn’t want any part of me to be responsible for burning her out. I liked that her light chased my shadows away and that meant I wasn’t going to have any kind of hand in dimming her internal glow.

Her breasts pressed into the center of my chest as she leaned more fully into me and I could feel the pointed peaks of her nipples stab into my skin. The sensation made my dick twitch behind my zipper and had all the available blood that was still above my belt rushing south. I’d always liked the way Dixie was built. She was on the shorter side, but every single part of her small frame was curved and lush. She looked like a woman that you could grab ahold of without having to watch yourself. She was delicate but in no way did she come across as fragile or breakable. She looked like she could take everything I had to give her, all the pent-up longing, all the nights of frustration I spent hard and alone, all the denied hunger that made me want to eat her up and then go back for seconds and thirds because I knew there was no way I was going to have my fill of her honeyed lips and velvety skin in one go.

There was so much of her to experience, and I wanted to know what all of it felt like, tasted like, sounded like. I wanted to watch her come from every possible position I could get her in, and then I wanted to find some new ones, ones no man had ever had her in before, and watch her come in those, too. Because I knew once I got her she would let me have her in ways she hadn’t let anyone else. Her eyes, so pretty and dark, made me all kids of promises, and I wanted to take her up on every single one of them. But there wasn’t anything I could promise in return, and that always kept me from crossing the invisible line.

She ran the tip of her nose along the edge of my jaw and that little nuzzle made my entire body shudder. She had the ability to bring down all the walls I’d so carefully built up around us in order to keep both of us safe. She didn’t have any clue the kind of damage I could do if I ignored all the warning bells ringing loudly in the back of my mind. I knew the ways in which I could wreck the women in my life that I cared about and there was no way on God’s green and often unforgiving Earth that I would subject her to that. I barely survived the loss of the last woman I loved. I knew if I let Dixie sneak her way inside my heart and something happened to her there would be nothing left of me. There wouldn’t be anyplace left for me to run.
