Blog Tour: Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend by Penny Reid + Review & Excerpt!

Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend, an all-new quirky and witty laugh out loud romance from New York Times bestselling author Penny Reid, is now live!

Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends.

Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She’s looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?

When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.

Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is a full-length, complete standalone, adult contemporary romantic comedy.

“This is the video from yesterday.” My stomach did a weird thing at the sight of him, and the sight of me crawling on all fours toward him, and what came after. I blinked away from the replay, before the part where I’d forgotten we were being filmed. “Why would I be mad at you about this? I knew you were filming.”
“Look harder.”
My forehead wrinkled, giving my attention back to her phone. I didn’t know what she wanted me to see, but now the video was repeating and—
“OH MY GOD!” I grabbed the phone. “This—this is—”
“Shh! Yes.” Now Amelia looked around, presumably to make certain none of the Seattleites surrounding us felt a disturbance in the politeness force. “Yes. I recorded it live. I’m so, so, so sorry.”
I leaned forward. “So that means it’s been—”
“Posted since last night. That’s right.” She covered her face again, groaning. “I’m so sorry.”
My eyes caught on the number of views, and I stood from the table, my chair scraping noisily on the linoleum. “ONE MILLION VIEWS?”
“Sorry!” she whispered loudly to someone at a nearby table. “We’ll just—we’re leaving.” Amelia grabbed my laptop and notebook and tilted her head toward the exit. “Time to go, and it was one point three the last time I checked. Now get your bag.”
Numbly, I lowered her phone and grabbed for my backpack and coat, fumbling with the strap. My fingers didn’t seem to work. She walked around the table and placed a hand on my back, helping to usher me out of the quiet area and waiting until we were standing in the hall to say, “I’m so sorry. It was an accident.”
“I can’t . . .” I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t think, I couldn’t move, I couldn’t speak. One point three million views. What must Byron think? “Oh crap,” I whispered, my gaze swinging around the interior of the library, unable to settle. “What about Byron? Does he know? How is he going to feel about this?”
“I don’t know if he knows. I’ve been trying to call him all morning. He won’t pick up his phone, and I’m frankly a little scared to leave a voice mail. Since he’s not on social media, he might not know.” Stuffing my laptop and notebook into my backpack, Amelia put the strap on my shoulder and took her cell phone from where I still gripped it.
I immediately covered my face like I could hide from this. My cheeks were hot. As much time as I’d spent this morning coming to terms with Jeff’s decisions last night, I’d spent ZERO seconds thinking about my ridiculous reaction to Byron’s performance. I wouldn’t allow myself to think about it. What was the point? He’d been pretending, acting, playing a part, and—as per usual—I’d left the interaction feeling like a fool.
“We have to delete it,” I rasped, my mouth dry, my brain on fire. “Before he sees it and finds out, we have to delete it.”
“No! No. Don’t do that.” She pressed the phone to her chest.
“What? Why not?”
“Think for a second.” She pushed me toward the elevator. “If you delete it, it might become a whole thing. He’s a famous guy who millions of people are starving to know more about. He has no social media and suddenly he’s on TikTok with you? And this isn’t like your lab video from Friday, this is you two together, acting like you’re close friends crushing on each other. We need to call him—together—and tell him. But first we need him to answer his damn phone.” Amelia nodded at her own assertion while stabbing the elevator call button with her index finger.
“Call him? You want to call him together?” Oh God. I didn’t want to call him. I never wanted to talk to him again. “You don’t think he’ll want us to take it down ASAP? Like you said, millions of people want to know about him. Don’t you think he’ll view this as an invasion of privacy?”
“Maybe.”
“Maybe?” I flinched back. “I think you mean, most certainly yes.”
“No.” She pulled me by the arm into the elevator and pressed all the right buttons. “We should call him, leave a voice mail together where we tell him exactly what happened, and ask what he wants to do about it. If you take it down, it might create more difficulty for him than if you left it up and let it run its course.”
I covered my face again, leaning against the wall for support. “I can’t believe this is happening.”
“Hey, on the bright side, you have over ten thousand new followers. That’s . . . something.”
I groaned. I would’ve given up every single one of my new followers if it would’ve somehow undone the posting of that video. What a nightmare.

This was a pretty good read, but kind of an odd, definitely unique read, as well. Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is a standalone book and is Winnie and Byron's book. Winnie and Byron have been in the same friend group since college. Winnie's best friend and roommate, Amelia, is Byron's best friend. But Byron and Winnie don't know each other very well. Winnie has always felt intimidated by Byron because he stares at her a lot and is bluntly honest about her job and other things in a way that she doesn't understand and that hurt her feelings. Byron is a reclusive famous author. Winnie is a science teacher and she does social media videos of experiments and such to encourage girls to enter the STEM field. When the opportunity for a side job that is right up her alley in social media and STEM comes available, Winnie decides to beef up her social media following to get an interview for the position. She asks her newly single crush to do the videos with her, but when that falls through, Byron volunteers to help her complete her video challenges. As they spend time together, Byron reveals he's had feelings for Winnie for years. They get to really know each other and understand how each othe ticks. Winnie and Byron were a good couple and I felt like they were meant to be.

This story was good. However, Byron and Winnie were both kind of odd people. At first, I found it hard to understand and identify with them. But I did grow to like them together by the end and feel the love and chemistry between them. They were sweet together and I liked how they adored each other. Their relationship is slow burn and there is no sealing the deal in the sack, which I am not a fan of. But they were both virgins and there are a few sexy moments in general. And I enjoyed the social media challenges and Winnie's love of STEM.

Overall, even though this was a bit of an odd read, I still enjoyed it. I liked seeing how Winnie and Byron's relationship developed and by the end, I was fully invested in them as a couple. I enjoyed their sweetness, sensitivity and undestanding towards each other, as well as their ability to communicate and willingness to better themselves. They were a smart, mature couple who deserved to find their perfect match and happyness. I look forward to what Ms. Reid comes up with next.

New Release: Always You by Samantha Young + Review!

Always You by Samantha Young is now live!

Arrochar Adair has loved her brother's ex-bodyguard and best friend, Mac Galbraith, for years. Once upon a time, she was too young for him, but now that she's a mature woman in her thirties, Arro can see no issue with their difference in age. Yet something deeper, a problem much more difficult to surmount, is keeping them apart.

Mac Galbraith remembers clearly the night Arro became everything to him, no longer just his best friend and boss's younger sister. However, having made many mistakes over the years, there is one mistake Mac is determined not to make: to believe that he is worthy of Arrochar Adair. Allowing them to grow closer during his daughter, Robyn's, return has proven his undoing. And when Arro forces the subject of their relationship, his response pushes her away. He just never meant for it to destroy them completely.

Devastated by Mac's final rejection, Arro is determined to move on without him in her life, though he seems intent on staying put. And when the Adair family face a new threat, one that may have ties to Mac's past, Arro can't seem to be rid of the man. In fact, Mac will do anything to protect her.

But with so much hurt between them, will Arro let Mac close enough to guard her from their enemy... before it's too late?

Review:
3.75-4 stars
****

This was a good book. Always You is book three in the Adair Family series and is the only sister, Arrochar/Arro, and Mac's book. Mac is Robin's father (he became a father at 15 years old) so there is a 13 year age difference. Mac has been the professional bodyguard and then head of security of the Adair estate for Arro's brother, Lachlan, who is now married to Robin. He has been a friend and practically a member of the the Adair family. Arro had feelings for him from as young as 18 years old, but he didn't think of her in that way. But as she grew older, they developed a friendship that developed into more. They both have fallen for each other, but the situation is complicated with all of the family relationships and Mac's own baggage from his past. They must work through their issues so they can go on and have a happy future together.

This was a good, emotional story with some suspense added in, in the form of someone from their pasts threatening their future. I liked Mac and Arro a lot. I definitely felt the love between them, even if I found them a little lacking in chemistry. They were detailed characters with lots of depth and their relationship was a long time in the making, but they were definitely meant to be.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It might not be my very fave of the series, but they have all been good, solid reads. I am definitely enjoying this series and look forward to more from the Adair family in the future!

New Release: Crying Wolfe by Kerrigan Byrne + Review!

Crying Wolfe by Kerrigan Byrne is now available!

A new trio of siblings learn that it is impossible to be a Goode without being a little wicked…

He’s the man with the Midas touch…
Elijah Wolfe is just as ruthless and aggressive as his name suggests. Born in harsh Nevada desert, he used his sharp wits and sharper fists to fight for survival mining ore for terrible men... Until one day he struck gold, literally. Despite his unimaginable wealth, his heart is empty of trust and his world full of enemies. He’s come to England searching for a priceless treasure once stolen from him and is prepared to ruin anyone who gets in his way.

She’s a thief with a heart of gold…
Rosaline Goode’s callous father left her nothing but a legacy of shame. Instead of worrying about the women gossiping behind their fans, or the cruelty of eligible men, she spends her nights avoiding society and mapping the stars. That is until absurd circumstances find her, nearly naked, in the home of the famously unscrupulous, lethal American whose name is on everyone's lips.

The promise of plunder…
Succumbing to a shotgun wedding is the worst thing Eli can imagine, but if it is what he must do to get what he wants, then so be it. Except now, all the arguments he’d made against the marriage are becoming enticements. His new wife is too young. Too small, sheltered, soft, and sensitive for a man forged in the mines and tempered in the desert heat. If theirs is a Devil’s bargain, then why does her shy touch take him to heaven?

Review:

4 stars

****

Aww, this was a good book. Crying Wolfe is the fifth book in the Goode Girls series. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw this book was coming out, because I thought the series was finished (as all of the original Goode sisters were married off). But I had forgotten about the illegitimate side family that their father had and am hopeful that we will get their stories too. Crying Wolfe is Elijah/Eli and Rosaline's story. Eli is an American, a little rough around the edges and a rich, treasure hunter. He bought the house next door to the Goodes. Rosaline is the youngest Goode sibling, who loves the stars. One night her kitten climbs out her bedroom window over to the house next door. Rosaline goes over to retrieve it and is distracted by the telescope in the library of the room she arrives in. She is startled by Eli, who discovers her and accuses her of being a thief. She escapes back to her own room, but he follows her, demands she give back whatever she stole, and thinking she is a maid, demands that he will tell her employer about her behavior. However, as she is in her nightgown and he is in her bedroom at night, when the entire family is awoken by the yelling, she is ruined unless Eli agrees to marry her. And so begins a tenuous relationship and soon a marriage between these two strangers. Both Eli and Rosaline have some family issues from their pasts to get over and they must learn how to open up so they can fall in love.

This was a really good story. I liked these two a lot. Eli and Rosaline were sweet, sexy and romantic together. He came off as a bit of a hick at first, in comparison to the proper English ladies in the Goode family. I didn't love that there were a few anti-American jabs tossed in, but I was able to overlook them for the most part. I felt bad for both Eli and Rosaline for their past traumas, especially Ros, for all that she had gone through (which brought me to tears a few times). But overall, I really liked this book. I enjoyed seeing Eli and Rosaline let down their walls and fall for each other.

Overall, I enjoyed Crying Wolfe. Rosaline and Eli were a great match. They had great chemistry and connection. I really enjoyed seeing their relationship develop. I am also looking forward to the rest of the Goode siblings' books and whatever Ms. Byrne comes up with next!

Excerpt

My new neighbor arrived at midnight on a Thursday. First came the moving truck, followed by a Jeep Wrangler. Mrs. Cooper, the former owner of the house, passed a while back. A damn shame. The woman was not only nice, but she made biscuits like you wouldn’t believe. For years the grand old Victorian house sat empty at the end of the cul-de-sac. Not unusual for a small town. Few people wanted to move to the middle of nowhere in Northern California, no matter how picturesque it might be. While the place had been sold not long after listing, there’d been no sighting of the new owner until now.
“What the heck?” I mumbled to myself, standing at the window.
Who moved in the middle of the night? It seemed covert and suspicious. Like something a criminal or government agent would do. Although, maybe they just traveled far and this happened to be the time they arrived. But most people would stay at a hotel and wait for daylight to do this sort of thing. Surely.
The only things ever happening at midnight in Wildwood were: 1. Harry, the town drunk, performing Bob Dylan classics in the middle of Main Street. 2. Me, an insomniac, wandering aimlessly around my house. That was it. Everyone else in the whole wide world—or our corner of it—was fast asleep.
Half hidden behind a curtain, I watched the truck being unloaded. A full moon shone down through the pine trees as the moving men hauled stuff inside. The first guy, the one who drove the Jeep, went straight into the house. He was tall and wore a ball cap. That was about all I could see. Maybe he was setting the place up for his wife and family. Maybe he had a boyfriend. He couldn’t possibly be single, heterosexual, under sixty, and emotionally mature. My luck just wasn’t that good. Not that I intended to date again in this lifetime.
Whoever he was and whatever he was doing, it would all be known in due course. Such was the joy of small-town life.
Once the furniture was moved inside, things got a little dull. There’s not much you can tell about a person from their boxes.
I took the opportunity to once again check the locks on all my windows and doors. After that, I made a cup of chamomile tea. Neither of these things helped me sleep, but the rituals were soothing. Mom always said I had a busy mind. I didn’t necessarily think about anything useful, I just thought a lot. At night, I tended to think about books, bad memories, and ex-boyfriends. The last two were often one and the same.
As a child, I was the daydreamer who got busted humming in class when everyone else was concentrating. (Like anybody actually needed algebra. If you can work out the discount at a sale, you’re good to go. Then again, this attitude might explain why my life had gone approximately nowhere.)
I returned to the window just in time to see my mystery man reappear. The new neighbor strode out to the Jeep and opened up the back. When he once more headed toward the house, the ball cap was gone and his short hair was on display. In each hand he carried a guitar case.
I perked up. Musicians were cool. Unless he owned electric guitars and believed in turning the volume up to eleven. That could get old fast.
As he got closer to the house, the porchlight hit him and…huh. Something about his profile tugged at a memory.
Guess he felt my gaze, because he turned toward my place. And whoa. His lips were a thin line, his jaw set to cranky, and none of it mattered—the man was beautiful. Though he really was strangely familiar.
Meanwhile, with only a lamp on behind me, I couldn’t have been more than an outline. A shadowy person lurking in the dark. Great. Nothing like being spied on to make you feel welcome in your new neighborhood. So much better than a casserole or cookies.
Wait! I knew where I recognized him from. Only it couldn’t be, because that would be crazy. Absolutely fucking wild. Yet there he stood.
“Holy shit,” I whispered.
My new neighbor was a goddamn rock star.

This was a cute, fun story! Famous in a Small Town is a new standalone book by Kylie Scott and is Ani and Garrett's story. Ani is a small town, California girl. Garrett is a widowed rock star. His wife died two years ago and he quit his band, traveling around the world trying to escape his grief alone. Now he has arrived to hide out in Ani's hometown. She has been a fan of Garrett's for years and is shocked to see him living next door. But the town embraces Garrett's need for privacy and hides him out while he sets down roots. Garrett is still grief stricken, but his friends encourage him to get back to living. So Ani and Garrett become friends, which develops into romance as they spend time together.

I enjoyed this story. Garrett is a widow, which usually isn't my favorite trope, and still grieving his wife. But the details about his late wife and how she died were vague, so it didn't much bother me. When he realized his feelings for Ani, he didn't hold himself back. He and Ani were a great match. She was laid back and rolled with the punches of being around a rock star, although she does have her own upsetting past trauma to move on from as well. I did think Ani and Garrett's chemistry was a little sparse, but overall, this was an entertaining, easy read. I enjoyed the cute small town characters. The story was fast paced and fun, despite the emotional subjects, which are not heavily focused on.

Overall, I enjoyed Ani and Garrett's journey to love. I am hoping this book is the beginning of a new series. I am intrigued by Garrett's band mates and would love to get their stories in the future. I look forward to more from Ms. Scott soon!

Two years after his wife’s death, rock star Garrett Hayes hasn’t moved on. But he has moved out of L.A. Where better to escape his past than a small town in the northern California mountains? If only he could get the townsfolk of Wildwood to leave him the hell alone.

Ani Bennet returned to her hometown for some much-needed serenity. The last thing she needs is a grumpy, too hot for his own good, rich and famous rock star living next door—and rent-free in her brain.

She set her fangirl tendencies aside and deleted his photo from her cell when they became neighbors. But when Garrett asks for help, she can’t say no. The problem is, spending time together is making those fangirl feelings resurface—and bringing them to a whole new level.

What chance does a small-town girl have with a world-famous rock star? It’s time for Ani to set her fears aside and find out.

Scott soon!
