This was a pretty good book, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first book in the series. Dream Chaser is Ryn (Kathryn) and Boone's story. Ryn is a stripper friend of Lottie's and an aspiring house flipper. She bought a house and planned to flip it, but has been having to use her extra money to help support her sister in law, neice and nephew because her brother is an alcoholic. She also has struck up a weird friendship of sorts with Cisco, who we met in the previous book, and who is a misunderstood criminal accused of killing a police officer. Boone is a security guy and member of Hawk's crew, as well as friends with the other guys in the previous book. He and Ryn have had an interest in each other, but Ryn has turned down his advances. She has had so much on her plate that she hasn't been able to find time to date. Boone started dating someone else. But everything comes to a perfect storm when Ryn's family drama and Cisco drama come to a head, putting her in danger and in need of protection from Boone, who is ready to convince Ryn to take a shot on him.

I enjoyed this story. I liked Ryn and Boone. I just didn't feel very much chemistry between them. I didn't like that they had a D/s relationship because it didn't feel like it was written well. I am glad though that it wasn't like the Honey series in it's raunchiness. It just felt like inauthentic BDSM light and I didn't like the leashing aspect. KA's usual man-speak didn't fit with a dom's personality either, in my opinion. I wish the BDSM had been left out. I do like reading BDSM, but do not enjoy KA's version of it. But the story was pretty good. It kept my attention and I felt the love between the couple. I liked the house flipping aspect, as well as being able to catch up with the other couples in the series.

Overall, this was an entertaining read. While I didn't completely love it, it was worth reading and enjoyable in general. I am liking this series, though, and I look forward to more from it and Ms. Ashley in the future.

What if Romeo wore hockey skates, and Juliet was raised on a farm next door?

As a life-long Vermonter, there are three beliefs I’ve always held true:

  1. Our family farm is everything

I have an illicit side job that could cost me my hockey scholarship. And now Maggie Todd knows my secret. She’s waiting for the right moment to use it against me. But every time I face off against her, I learn things I shouldn’t want to know. Like how deeply her competitive streak runs, and how sexy that is. And how easy it is to make her blush… everywhere.

An Adler and a Todd cannot be lovers. Breaking that rule is like pulling a pin on a grenade--everything in my life could blow up. Can we surrender to these feelings… or will our families’ feud make us its next casualty?

Now I need a job, because this gel manicure won’t upkeep itself. The only available option is the last one I’d ever want--a job as the hockey team’s equipment manager. My plan is to do the bare minimum, get paid, and find my way back into my father’s good graces.

3.75-4 stars

****

This was a good, yet heartbreaking book. Courting Trouble is book two in the Goode Girls series. This is Honoria, known as Nora, Goode's story. We met Nora in the previous book, her sister Pru's story. I wasn't sure how I felt about Nora, based on her behavior in that book. But, in Courting Trouble, we learn the real history and reasons for her behavior. Nora has a tragic history and has had to harden herself in order to survive her circumstances. She is forced to betray her first love, Titus, a stableboy at her family's estate, and forced into a loveless marriage to an abusive psycho. In the meanwhile, Titus goes on to become a reknowned doctor and surgeon. When Nora's husband shows his true, murderous colors, he ends up dead and she ends up shot. She is rushed to the doctor with the best chance to save her life, Titus, and is faced with her past for the first time in many years. Nora and Titus have a lot to work out between them and a lot of wrongs to make right.

I really enjoyed this story. The writing was very good as usual. The tale was very sad. Nora was a tragic, misunderstood woman with a will of steel to survive all that she went through. She and Titus were the star crossed sort of lovers. They were very sweet together once they were able to move on from their heartbroken past. I was very happy they got the HEA they deserved. They were each others' one and only love. I was sad for everything they had to go through, but I really feel like they were meant to be. I do think the book felt a little short in comparison to Ms. Byrne's other books but that did not hinder my enjoyment.

Overall, this was a good book. I enjoyed Nora and Titus's story. I very much enjoy this series and look forward to more from Ms. Byrne in the future!

The door opened and Lila walked in. “I’ve got good news and bad news. You do have a concussion, but it’s minor and my brother says the rest of your brain looks great. So you’ll be fine, but I either need to send you to the hospital for observation for the day or someone needs to stay with you.”
“I’ll be fine.” She wasn’t about to go to the hospital. No way. “Just give me some instructions and I’ll be out of your hair.”
“No, you won’t. You’ll be completely in my hair because, like I said, I need to know someone is watching you for the next twelve hours,” Lila explained. “I can do that by driving you an hour and a half to the hospital, checking you in, and then having someone pick you up late in the evening. Or you can have a friend stay with you today. I would tell you to hang out here at the clinic, but we’re closed this morning. I’m going to Noelle’s science fair. If we can ever trick another NP to come down here, well, we’ll still be closed sometimes.”
It was weird since hospitals didn’t close in New York, but this clinic was the nearest thing they had to a hospital in Papillon. Lila would definitely insist on driving her since she wasn’t even letting her lie on the couch by herself. There was no way Lila would let her get behind the wheel.
“I swear I’ll be cool,” she promised. “I’ll sign one of those forms and everything will be okay. I don’t mind signing it.”
“You want to sign an AMA?” Lila’s eyes had widened slightly but not in a surprised way. Nope. Roxie knew that look. It was the “dumbass said what” look.
“You’re not leaving against medical advice,” Armie declared with a frown.
She didn’t have anyone to call. She quickly went through the short list of people she knew well enough to ask for a favor. She pretty much only knew the guys she worked with. She worked and then went home. She got the occasional beer, and sometimes she hung out with Lila. That was the sum of who she might be able to ask.
Major was working. He would have been called in to take over the rest of her shift and his own. Armie would be at his daughter’s school event. Vince would be working with Major, and the fourth deputy, Chris, had recently hired on and was moving today.
The door opened and Zep walked in, Daisy on a leash, though she obviously wasn’t trained. She squirmed and strained against the leash the minute she got in the room.
“Sorry, I wanted to make sure you were all right before I head into Houma,” he said. “Also wanted to give you the chance to say good-bye to Daisy.”
If she didn’t find someone to “watch” over her, Armie would likely do it himself. Or they would have to spend their whole day driving back and forth to the hospital. He would miss his daughter’s science fair, and it wasn’t some elementary event where they showed off homemade volcanoes. Noelle was in her senior year of high school and competing for scholarships.
Also, she might save the puppy from having to go to some horrible shelter.
She looked at Zep. She knew what she was about to say was a mistake, but she didn’t see that she had any other choice. She was desperate. “I need someone to make sure I can wake up every couple of hours.”
Zep stopped and looked around as though trying to make sure she was talking to him. “You want me to call my sister or something?”
His sister and her husband, Harrison Jefferys, owned a B and B, the nicest one in town. That could be the solution. She could check in for the day and sleep on the couch in the great room. She’d heard their family dog was almost like a nanny to their little boy. Maybe he could be a nurse, too. “Does she have any rooms open?”
Armie huffed and Lila started shaking her head as though they both knew she planned to ask a dog to help her out before she’d ask the human male in the room.
Zep nodded as though that was what he’d expected. “Sorry. I was talking to Sera and Harry last night and they’re completely booked. They’ve got a big family coming down for the week. From somewhere back East.”
Then she didn’t have a choice. She closed her eyes and wished the ground would swallow her up. It would be easier than doing what she had to do now. She sighed and opened her eyes because the ground was still firm beneath her. “Would you do it?”
The slowest, sexiest smile crossed his face. “I can definitely wake you up, darlin’. Though I’m more used to putting pretty ladies to sleep. Wait. That came out wrong. Never mind. I can do it.”
She already regretted the choice.

This was a pretty cute book. Best Friends Don't Kiss is a standalone book and is Luke and Ava's story. Luke and Ava have been friends since college. They have been each others very best friend for years. When Ava's family is getting on her about being the last single sister and finding a date to her sister's wedding and her upcoming high school reunion, she panics and says she has a boyfriend. She tries to find a date on dating apps with no luck, so Luke volunteers to pretend to be her boyfriend for her engagements. Of course, pretending feels completely real and they realize they love each other and are meant to be together.

Best Friends Don't Kiss was an enjoyable read. I liked Luke and Ava. It took them a little longer than I would have liked to realize they had romantic feelings for each other. I also felt like they were a little low on chemistry. But once they got together, they were really sweet. This was a cute story and I liked where they couple ended up. I liked that the couple both had cool jobs- astronaut and artist. This book was entertaining, sweet and witty.

Overall, this was a fun read. I was happy Luke and Ava found happiness together. I felt like they were meant to be together. I enjoyed this book and I look forward to more from Max Monroe in the future.

Ava

I only get two steps toward my door when my phone starts ringing from inside my purse. I dig it back out again to find an unknown number with a Vermont area code flashing on the screen.

I know I should let it roll to voice mail, but Aunt Poppy called me from jail one time, and I never heard the end of how I wasted her one phone call by not answering.

Reluctantly, I hit the green button and put it to my ear.

   “Ava! It’s Callie!”

Damn Aunt Poppy and her fascination with streaking!

   “Oh, uh…hi, Callie…”

“Sorry to bother you, but I had one more question to ask, and since I now have your number, I figured I’d just call you really quick!”

Greattt. “Sure thing,” I say with saccharine sweetness.

“Since I have to finalize the head count for the venue by tomorrow, I need to know if I should just put you down as a single,” she begins. “Pretty sure your mom told me you weren’t married or engaged or dating anyone, but I just want to double-check that you’re still single. Honestly, I think you’re one of only ten people from our high school that isn’t married yet!” she exclaims through an amused giggle.

I put my phone on speaker, drop it down on my entry table, and give it the double finger with as much gusto as I can manage.

Obviously unaware of my display, she continues. “So crazy that most of us have reached the age where we’re married, and some with kids now. Which, by the way, I can’t believe your baby sister Kate is getting married before you. Soon, you’re going to be the only single Lucie left!”

My tongue is tied by an imaginary angry fist, but it doesn’t matter. One of the only positive qualities Callie possesses is the ability to carry on an entire conversation herself.

“By the way, you’re the best for helping me plan the reunion!”

“That’s me.” The best people-pleasing lunatic in NYC who really should look into finding a good therapist to help me work through all of this before I have to head home to Vermont to watch my baby sister get married in the same week I get to attend a fifteen-year high school reunion I somehow got roped into helping plan. With the Regina George of my high school class. In less than two short months from now.

Okay. So, I don’t need to find a therapist; I need to find Jesus. I just hope he lives in Manhattan.

“So…one or two?” Callie asks, pulling me from the deep recesses of my thoughts.

   “One or two?”

She giggles again. It’s like nails on a chalkboard to my ears. “How many people should I put you down for, silly?”

This is a remake of Nightmare on Elm Street; it has to be. A new Halloween movie or something. Michael Myers himself must be right outside my freaking door. That’s the only way the universe would be cruel enough to add Callie’s interest into the swirling, boiling pot my family already has roasting over the Ava’s Relationship Status fire.

Just like that, it hits me. I cannot go to this reunion and attend my baby sister’s wedding alone in the same damn week. I just…can’t.

I completely break under the fucking pressure of it all, and the words blurt from my lips before I can stop them. “Two.”

   “Two?”

   “Uh…yeah… I’ll be bringing my…boyfriend.”

   You’ll be…what? You don’t have a boyfriend, Looney Tunes!

“Your boyfriend? Oh, how exciting! Your mom didn’t tell me you were seeing someone!”

   “It’s…uh…fairly new.”

Yeah, it sure is. It hasn’t even fucking started yet…

Thinking better of my answer, I add to it quickly before Callie can undercut it. “But serious. Really serious, actually. We’ve just been keeping it private so we can enjoy the perfectness by ourselves for a while.”

   Dear God, Ava.

“That’s so awesome! What’s his name?”

Yeah, Ava! Tell your old archnemesis all about your imaginary boyfriend!

Panic sets in when I realize there is absolutely no way I can talk myself out of this conversation. So, I do what anyone in my situation would do—avoid it.

Three bangs of my fist to my own freaking door, I end the call in a rush, “Oh shoot, Callie! I have to go. My boyfriend just got here, and we’re already late for a big, fancy Halloween party in SoHo. Talk soon! Bye!” Click.

   It’s official. I’m pathetic.

I might as well be Debra Messing’s character in The Wedding Date.

Sure, my sister didn’t have an affair with my ex while I was still dating him, but she is my baby sister whose impending nuptials will make me the oldest and last single Lucie sister. And now, because I let Callie fucking Camden get the best of me with her backhanded bullshit, I told the snooty biotch that I have a boyfriend and I’d help plan the reunion.

   Oy vey.

Call me crazy, but I highly doubt I can find a hot, Dermot-Mulroney-looking escort in under sixty days.

You know, you could just be an adult about this and tell Callie how you really feel—that you don’t have a boyfriend and you don’t want to help plan that stupid reunion with someone who was a total bitch to you in high school…

That would certainly be the easy way out, wouldn’t it?

Too bad my damn pride is making that feel like an impossible option.

On a heavy sigh, I drop my phone back in my purse, sling my bag over my shoulder, snag the stupid invitation off the counter, head straight out of my apartment, and stride right across the hall, barging through my best friend’s unlocked front door.

I swear, one of the best things Luke and I ever did was rent apartments in the same building—and on the same floor—from his rich uncle Gary. It makes freak-out moments like this a heck of a lot easier to handle.

My go-go boots pound across the hardwood floors as I make a beeline past Luke—who is standing in his living room—dump my purse, and head straight for the kitchen.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. Where’s the fire?” he says on a laugh. “Please tell me you haven’t gone old-school and brought a hot plate into your apartment.”

“Funny ha-ha, Luke,” I retort but keep it moving to the fridge. “The fire is my life. Everything is shit, I need a drink, and I’m pretty sure we’re already late to the party!”
