New Release: The Best Men by Lauren Blakely and Sarina Bowen

The Best Men

by Lauren Blakely and Sarina Bowen

 is now available!

Bestselling authors Sarina Bowen and Lauren Blakely team up for the first time in an enemies-to-lovers, opposites-attract, irresistibly sexy standalone romance between the best man and the other best man!

In my defense, I was left alone with a bottle of single-malt and a life-long penchant for protecting my baby sister. Still, that's no excuse to send ten drunk-texts on why her hasty marriage would be a mistake.

If only I had just texted my sister. But nope. I accidentally sent the message to her, her groom, and his super hot wingman.

I also used the phrase “super hot wingman,” so I’d like to die now.

Instead, I have to plan a wedding with the aforementioned hottie and share a too-small guesthouse in steamy Miami.

Three days in the sun with the cocky, charming former athlete who likes to push my buttons? Fine, two can play at that let’s-infuriate-each-other game.

Until Asher ups the stakes with one wildly sexy suggestion. A no-strings fling, then I go back to my single dad life in New York, and he returns to his star-studded one.

Sign me up.

But the more nights I spend with the other best man, the more I want days too, and that just can't happen. Especially when I find out the real reason why…

Contents Include: First times, a secret to-do list, champion-level flirting, fast cars, #eggplants, and two men who look good in formal wear.

New Release: The Family You Make by Jill Shalvis + Review

The Family you Make by Jill Shalvis is now available!

Blurb:
Beloved New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis begins a new series--Sunrise Cove--set near beautiful Lake Tahoe, with a heartwarming story of found family and love.
During the snowstorm of the century Levi Cutler is stranded on a ski lift with a beautiful stranger named Jane. After strong winds hurl the gondola in front of them into the ground, Levi calls his parents to prepare them for the worst...but can't bring himself to say goodbye. Instead, wanting to fulfill his mother's lifelong wish, he impulsively tells her he's happily settled and Jane is his girlfriend--right before his phone dies.
But Levi and Jane do not.
Now Levi's family is desperate to meet "The One." Though Jane agrees to be his pretend girlfriend for just one dinner, she's nervous. After a traumatic childhood, Jane isn't sure she knows how to be around a tight-knit family that cherishes one another. She's terrified, and a little jealous. But an unexpected series of events and a host of new friends soon show Jane that perhaps this is the life she was always meant to have.
As Jane and Levi spend more time together, pretend feelings quickly turn into real ones. Now all Jane has to do is admit to herself she can't live without the man she's fallen in love with and the family she has always dreamed of.

Review:

3.5 - 3.75 stars
***

This was a pretty good book. The Family You Make is Levi and Jane's story. The two of them meet in a rather terrifying way. Jane is a traveling nurse working in Sunrise Cove temporarily, while Levi is visiting his family who lives there. They both happen to be the only passengers on the same ski gondola on the side of a mountain when the power goes out and the track breaks. They think they are going to die and Levi even gets injured. But that meeting leaves them feeling a connection they want to explore temporarily while they are in town. Jane also agrees to be Levi's pretend girlfriend in front of his family. And that pretend feeling very quickly starts feeling very real. Jane and Levi find they really are meant to be together.

I found this book entertaining and the story interesting. I did find the book a little slow moving and meandering at times. I liked Levi and Jane. They were sweet together and had a good connection. I just felt the romance lacked a little focus, adding in their friends Charlotte and Mateo's romance on the side. But the book's ending was cute and worthwhile. I was happy Jane and Levi were able to overcome their issues and get their HEA. I do miss the more romance focused feel of the Heartbreaker Bay series though.

Overall, this was a pretty good read. I look forward to more from Ms. Shalvis in the future.

Blurb:

When she was a little girl, Remy Archer fell in love with Hyde Fuller at first sight. In fact, he was the only thing she could see for a very long time. For Remy, it never mattered to her that Hyde was always too serious and always seemed so sad. To her, he was the very best, and the center of her entire world. She never dreamed he would let her down when she needed him the most.
Now Remy is a semi-reasonable adult, one with a better understanding of why her intense feelings scared Hyde away when she was at her lowest point. She’s also really proud that she's still around to experience all the best and worst that surviving something deeply traumatic has to offer. The last thing she needs or wants, is Hyde coming back and taking over her every thought and feeling the way he once did. Unfortunately, they picked the exact same time to come home to search for a little redemption.
When he was a little boy, the instant they met, Hyde Fuller wanted nothing more than to protect Remy Archer from everything, including herself. She gleefully took up every moment of his free time, and every ounce of his patience, as they grew alongside one another. He was so intent on keeping her safe, he didn't realize how deeply Remy had worked her way into his heart.
Now that Hyde’s facing the biggest challenge and biggest change of his entire life, he deeply regrets walking away from Remy. She was always the one person who always had his back, no matter what. The way Remy loved him used to terrify him, but now, it’s the way he loves her that scares him to death.

History has a bad habit of repeating itself, and Remy has a knack for turning even the most simple of situations end over end. This time Hyde is determined to stay by her side no matter what, even though his love for Remy is going to change more than his life this time around.

Review:

4 stars
****

This was really good! Prodigal Son is book two in the Forever Marked series by Jay Crownover, which is the next generation spin-off series from the Marked Men series. This is Remy, Cora and Rome's daughter and Hyde, Shaw and Zeb's son's story. Remy and Hyde were best friends and inseperable growing up. But Remy was also in love with Hyde and she really thought they were meant to be together. Hyde did not see her like that at the time, although he did love her as a best friend, and cared about her. Remy had mental health difficulties as a teenager. At eighteen, Hyde had trouble coping with that and seeing her in crisis, as well as trouble deciding on a future job course after high school. When he told her that he was going to join the military, Remy had a break down, wound up hospitalized and was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Remy's mother advised him to cut ties with her because she thought it would be the best way for Remy to heal. Now, eight years later, Remy is stable with medication and doing really well. She and Hyde have seen each other a few times over the years, but have not really talked much. Remy has moved back to Denver for good. Hyde too is now out of the military and is moving back to town, with his orphaned newborn daughter in tow. The time is right for Remy and Hyde to become friends again, resolving their past hurt, and realizing they are meant to be.

I really enjoyed this book. I really liked Remy and Hyde. I was a bit worried that Remy's mental health issues would be hard to read about, but in the present she is in a good spot and healthy. I definitely felt like Remy and Hyde were truly meant to be together. They were the only people who ever truly "got" each other and were each other's only loves. I enjoyed the fact that Remy was the one who chased Hyde as a kid, but that as an adult, he realized how great she was pretty quickly and was the persuer romantically. This was a good story with good writing, great characters with lots of depth, and lots of chemistry. I liked Hollyn, Hyde's daughter, and her part in the story, too.

Overalll, this was a really good book. I think I even liked it a bit more than book one and I am definitely enjoying this series. I look forward to more to come from Ms. Crownover in the future!

Excerpt

I called Hawk Delgado.

It was no surprise this situation in Misted Pines was known to him. He was tasked with keeping me safe, and although this had nothing to do with me, it had to do with Misted Pines, and that was where I was. It was also not a surprise that he currently did not have any resources to devote to assisting with it.

However, he gave me two names.

Nightingale Investigations, an outfit located where Delgado was, in Denver, Colorado.

And Tanner Layne, a private investigator who worked out of a shop in Brownsburg, Indiana, which was, to my astonishment, where Joe Callahan was based.

Neither were close.

But Nightingale was closer.

Though for reasons I didn’t understand (they probably had to do with Callahan), I called Layne first, left a message as it was the weekend and waited.

It was not long before he returned my call.

He had a full caseload, but said he’d look into it and get back to me.

I then reached out to Denver, leaving another message.

Not much time passed before a woman named Shirleen Jackson got in touch, saying she’d assessed it and presented it to her boss, the man behind the name, Lee Nightingale. She would follow up with me as soon as he’d made his decision.

Within hours, I had two replies.

Layne: “We’re ready to roll when we receive word from the investigator on site that he welcomes assistance. We have a message to him. But if he doesn’t give us the greenlight, I’m afraid at this time we can’t get involved. I hope you understand. I would feel the same if someone I didn’t know pushed into one of my investigations, especially at this early juncture. Trust me when I say that it’s never helpful.”

I didn’t know who “we” was, I also didn’t ask, but I suspected he’d consulted with Callahan.

I also didn’t think this was “early.” At that point, she’d been missing nearly a week.

Which begged the question, what parents had a slumber party for their eight-year-old on a Monday evening?

I didn’t ask Layne that either.

Jackson: “We understand your concern, but Lee looked into things and the investigator contracted to assist the local authorities is second to none. In this kind of situation, although it seems contradictory, more hands on deck can make a mess.”

That was two nos of the same ilk.

I decided to focus on the “second to none” comment, knowing they were referring to the fact it was clear the locals had called Cade Bohannan in.
