Hot Winter Nights by Jill Shalvis

Release Date: September 25, 2018

HWN high res cover copy (2).JPG

Hot Winter Nights, a stand-alone Heartbreaker Bay romance, by Jill Shalvis is a sexy romance in which hero Lucas Knight wakes up with a woman in his bed with no memory of how that happened. What the heck?

Who needs mistletoe?

Most people wouldn’t think of a bad Santa case as the perfect Christmas gift. Then again, Molly Malone, office manager at Hunt Investigations, isn’t most people, and she could really use a distraction from the fantasies she’s been having since spending the night with her very secret crush, Lucas Knight. Nothing happened, not that Lucas knows that—but Molly just wants to enjoy being a little naughty for once . . .

Whiskey and pain meds for almost-healed bullet wounds don’t mix. Lucas needs to remember that next time he’s shot on the job, which may be sooner rather than later if Molly’s brother, Joe, finds out about them. Lucas can’t believe he’s drawing a blank on his (supposedly) passionate tryst with Molly, who’s the hottest, smartest, strongest woman he’s ever known. Strong enough to kick his butt if she discovers he’s been assigned to babysit her on her first case. And hot enough to melt his cold heart this Christmas.

Hot Winter Nights is a good book! This is Molly and Lucas's story. Molly and Lucas both work in Heartbreaker Bay at Hunt Investigations. Lucas is one of the investigators and Molly is the office manager. Molly wants to begin working as an investigator too, but the men in the office are protective of her, especially her older brother, and reluctant to give her a chance. When her neighbor, an elderly woman who works as an elf at a Santra attraction, comes to her for help finding out why Santa isn't paying them the wages they are owed, Molly decides to take the case. Lucas is secretly assigned by his boss to help her with her investigation and keep her safe. Lucas and Molly both have an attraction and chemistry between them but neither act on it until they start spending time together working on this case. As they spend time together, they begin to fall for each other and heat up the cold Winter nights together.

I really liked Lucas and Molly. Both had been through a lot in their pasts. But I loved that, despite their vulnerability, they had open hearts for each other. They did not push each other away too much. Lucas and Molly were sweet and sexy together and they also made a great investigative team. I really liked the elves and Santa theme; it was funny and cute. I did think the conflict wrapped up a bit too close to the end. I wanted to see a bit more happy times and resolution before the end of the book. Still, I enjoyed this book and Lucas and Molly's relationship progression and journey to love.

Overall, this was a cute, sexy, emotional and funny book! I love this series. All of the books are good and enjoyable. I can't wait for more from the Heartbreaker Bay series!R

REVIEW:

3.75-4 stars
****

Aww, this was a good one! Lost in Bliss is another great addition to the Nights in Bliss series. This book is Laura, Cameron and Rafe's MFM story. Laura has lived in Bliss for a few years, having left the city and her job with the FBI due to heartbreak. She worked with Cameron and Rafe as an FBI profiler of a serial killer and she begins to fall for both of them. Laura gets fired after she balks when her profile is rejected and she moved to Bliss, assuming a new identity. Cameron and Rafe searched for Laura for years and they finally found her in Bliss. But the serial killer is back killing again and he follows the men. The men want a relationship with Laura. She eventually forgives them and they fight together to solve the serial killer case.

Overall, this was a pretty quick, easy read. It was fun, suspenseful, sexy and at times, emotional. I liked Laura, Rafe and Cameron. There wasn't too much pushing away or long, drawn out angst. As always, I loved the town of Bliss and it's quirky, fun people. I look forward to more from Ms. Blake and this series in the future!

EXCERPT:

Rafe didn’t miss the way Laura’s body went still, her muscles stiffening where a moment before she’d been laughing with her friends. She changed the second she became aware of them. It wasn’t the greeting he would prefer. Back when they were friends, when she would see him coming, her whole body would go soft and a welcoming smile would transform her face from something professional to an intimate visage, one only meant for someone close to her. He’d taken great pride in the fact that he’d only ever seen that look on her face for one other person. “Hello, bella.” She frowned at him. Even with her lips turned down, she was stunning. She looked only slightly out of place in her yellow heels. The rest of her outfit was charmingly Western. She had on a full cotton skirt, a yellow tank top, and a light denim jacket. It wasn’t far off from what many of the other women were wearing, yet Laura made it seem elegant. Everything she did had an air of grace to it, even when she was bitching at him. “I thought I asked you to stop calling me that.” He wasn’t going to let her push him. He gave her what he hoped was an easy smile. “And I asked you to stop calling me asshole. I doubt you’ve done that. Dance with me.” Her eyes widened, a look of horror crossing her face. “No.” “Come on, baby. Don’t say no.” Cam crowded her, but she held her ground. Those heels were planted firmly in the grass beneath her. “I can’t dance with you until you dance with him. I lost the coin flip.” “Oh, that’s romantic.” Her hands found her hips, and those gorgeously full lips pursed. “Every woman in the world wants to be won by the flip of a coin.” “We didn’t have time to play cards,” Rafe admitted. He was well aware that people were listening in. Oh, they were pretending to be doing other things, but they leaned over and then talked behind their hands. The citizens of Bliss seemed to be enjoying the drama. Damn, he couldn’t get used to it. In DC, no one paid a bit of attention to what was going on around them. He tried to ignore it. “We weren’t sure how else to handle it, bella. You have to teach us.” Her lips rose in a sarcastic grin. “See, that’s easy. Let me teach you how to handle a situation like this. You both turn around and walk out the way you came in. You get in your car and drive to Alamosa and get on a plane back to DC.” Cam sighed. “That’s not going to happen.” Cam ran a hand up her arm, and Rafe was satisfied with the way she shivered. She still responded to Cam. Would she respond to him? He reached out and took her hand, studying it. Her hand was small in his, her skin fair against his olive tone. Her nails weren’t as long as she used to keep them, but they were still manicured and painted a pretty pink. “Come on and dance with me. We came all this way. We’ve looked for so long. Can’t you spare a moment of your time? I promise to behave.” He wouldn’t behave. He had every intention of reminding her of the chemistry they’d had, but he wasn’t going to announce it. “Fine.” She pushed off of the picnic table she’d been leaning against. “One dance and that’s all.” “With both of us,” Cam added quickly, pushing the advantage. “It’s only fair. Otherwise, we’ll both dance with you here and now.” There it was. Rafe’s heart soared. Her eyes had flared momentarily, and it wasn’t with disgust. When they had checked into the odd motel at the edge of town, they had decided it would be best to come at her together. She’d been turned on by sex with both of them. They needed to remind her of what they had to offer.

REVIEW:

4-4.25 stars
****

Holy Cow! Perversion was so good! Book one in the Perversion trilogy, this is Emma Jean and Grim's story. As always with Ms. Frazier's books, this one is a twisty, page turner. I won't go into much detail about the story so as not to spoil anything. I will say this... This book is set in the small, desolate town of Lacking, a crime-ridden town run by three rival gangs. EJ amd Grim meet when they are young and feel a connection, but they lose touch. When they meet again, they find they are on opposites sides of a bloody gang war. This is modern day Romeo and Juliet story. Loyalties are tested, crimes and atrocities are committed, and at heart, there is a love story for the ages.

I don't always love trilogies, because I sometimes feel like the author is dragging one book out into three books unnecessarily. But I did not feel that way about this book. I am happy that this is part of trilogy because I love this storyline and the characters and can't wait to spend as much time with them as possible. There is a lot packed into Perversion. It is a fast paced and action packed book. I loved both Grim and Emma Jean. They are awesome characters. EJ is spunky, strong and a fighter. Actually, Grim is too. They are quite the perfect pair. All of the characters are great and I am definitely intrigued by some of the side characters, so maybe they will get their own stories one day too.

This story is fast paced, dark but not too dark for me, and super interesting and different. I love the small town feel and world that Ms. Frazier built. It was gritty, sexy and all-around great storytelling. There are moments of high emotion, humor and suspense. Also, I loved the cinematic feel of the book. I could picture everything exactly, as if it were a movie.

Overall, Perversion was a great book! I am so excited about this trilogy. This book ranks right up there with my favorites by Ms. Frazier. Yes, it ends on a cliffhanger, but I was satisfied with the ending spot and I wasn't even mad about it. I can't wait to find out the rest of EJ and Grim's story with the final two books in the trilogy!

Now, she is a five- time USA Today bestselling author and her books have been translated into numerous languages and published all around the world. T.M. enjoys writing what she calls sexy‘wrongside of the tracks romance’ with morally corrupt anti-heroes and ballsy heroines. Her books have been described as raw, dark and gritty. Basically, what that means, is while some authors are great at describing a flower as it blooms, T.M. is better at describing it in the final stages of decay. 4.5-4.75 stars
*****

Runaway Girl is one of the best books I've read in a long time! This book is Naomi and Jason's story. In Getaway Girl, a previous stand alone book by Tessa Bailey, we met Elijah, who had just been left at the altar. His story was told in that book. Now, in Runaway Girl, we get Naomi's side of the story. We find out where she went after running away from her wedding, what she did and who she met (and fell in love with). Naomi ended up driving away and wound up in St. Augustine. There she got her first job, using one of her only skills, as a pageant coach, working with a young girl named Birdie. Jason is Birdie's older brother, who is home on leave from the Army caring for Birdie until she graduates high school after the death of her twin sister. I won't go into more detail about the story because I don't want to give too much away, but this story was so good!

I loved both Naomi and Jason. Naomi was striking out on her own, being brave and trying to live life her way and to the fullest. She found herself on this journey and I loved the way she came into her own. Jason was awesomely alpha. He was a little gruff, but underneath, sweet and protective. I loved the way he was in awe of and adored Naomi in his own tough guy way. Their chemistry was combustible. I loved them together so much. There was great, delicious sexual tension and, when it broke, their sexy scenes were some of the hottest I've ever read. Holy Hotness! I loved their journey to falling in love and everything that happened between them along the way.

This book was so so good, and one of the most romantic books I've ever read. It made me cry with it's perfection and sweetness. There is a great epilogue, too. The book was deliciously long and satisfying. There were great, unique characters. Besides loving Jason and Naomi, I also loved Birdie. I hope she gets her own book one day too.

Runaway Girl was romantic, sexy, fun and emotional. Gah. Just... love. I just loved everything about it. It is a very near-perfect book, which is saying a lot coming this very picky reader. I think it is tied with Disorderly Conduct for my favorite book by Ms. Bailey, who is fast becoming one of my very favorite authors. Her characters' depth and chemistry just does it for me in the very best way. I can not wait to see what she comes up with next!

Author Bio

Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days.

Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention.

She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of ten years and six-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Prologue

  Ava

We met in a bar, of all places, a dingy hole-in-the-wall favored by military members from the nearby Navy base in San Diego. I went with a friend from school who was interested in one of the military guys. Before that night, I’d never been there, and I’ve never been back. John was celebrating the promotion of one of his buddies. He crashed into me as I left the ladies’ room and kept me from falling by grabbing my arms to steady me. Just like in the movies, our eyes met, and my spine tingled with the kind of instantaneous awareness I’d only read about but never experienced personally. “I’m so sorry,” he said, gorgeous and fierce in his fatigues. I noticed gold on his collar, a hint of late-day scruff on his jaw and the name WEST in bold black letters on his chest. Intense electric-blue eyes made it impossible for me to look away, even when I was safely back on my feet. “Are you all right?” he asked. Realizing I’d been staring at him, I blinked and reluctantly broke the connection. “I… Yes, I’m fine. Thank you for the save.” And then he smiled, and the tingling began anew. “I’m John.” I shook his outstretched hand. “Ava.” Keeping his hold on my hand, he tipped his head. “You come here often?” “Never,” I said, laughing. “I’m a first-timer.” “What do you think so far?” “I wasn’t impressed until about thirty seconds ago.” As if he had all the time in the world to give me, he leaned against the wall. “Is that right? What happened thirty seconds ago?” I thought about taking back my hand but didn’t. “I was saved from certain disaster by a man in uniform.” “The guy in the uniform is the reason you needed saving in the first place, because he wasn’t watching where he was going. Least he can do is buy you a drink.” “I wouldn’t say no to that.” I was proud of my witty responses and got the feeling he could more than hold his own in the wittiness department. Across the crowded room, I noticed my friend talking to the guy she’d come to see, and her brows lifted in interest when she saw me with John. He guided me to the bar, placing a proprietary hand on my lower back, and told one of the guys to give me his stool. “Yes, sir.” The younger man bowed gallantly to me as he took his beer and moved along. “Do people always do what you say?” “If they know what’s good for them.” His teasing grin kept the comment from being overly cocky. “What can I get you?” Deciding to live dangerously for once, I asked for a cosmopolitan. “Go big or go home,” he said with admiration. “That’s my motto.” I was so full of shit. I wondered if he could tell I was all talk or what he’d think of me if he knew I usually err much closer to the side of caution than the wild side. I wondered if he could tell I was just barely old enough to drink. I’d turned twenty-one only six months earlier. When my cosmo and his Budweiser had been delivered, he offered a toast. “To new friends.” I touched my glass to his bottle. “To new friends.” “So, where’re you from, Ava?” “New York.” “I thought I heard New Yawk in your voice.” I batted my eyelashes at him. “So four years at the University of California San Diego didn’t scrub the New York out of me?” Laughing, he said, “Hardly. I know some guys from New York. One of them is from Staten Island, which is about as New York as it gets. I know New York when I hear it.” “I’m from Purchase, upstate from the city. What about you?” “I’m from all over. My old man is a retired general. You name it, I’ve lived there.” “Where’s home?” “Right here.” He turned that intense gaze on me, and I went stupid in the head. I couldn’t see anything but him. We might as well have been alone in the crowded bar for all I knew. Unlike my friend, who loved men in uniform, I was never turned on by the uniform. Until then. Until John. “You want to get out of here?” I swallowed hard. It wasn’t like me to leave a bar with a man I’d just met. “And go where?” “Somewhere we can talk.” “What do you want to talk about?” He leaned in so his lips were close to my ear. “Everything. I want to know every single thing there is to know about you.”   That’s how we started. We were intense from the first second we met until the last time I saw him five years ago today. I can’t believe it’s been five years since I looked into those incredible blue eyes or woke to him on the pillow next to me or heard his voice in my ear, whispering words that’re permanently carved into my heart as he made love to me. The worst part is I have no idea where he is. I don’t know if he’s alive or dead, being held captive or if he’s living his life somewhere else with someone else. I don’t know, and the not knowing is the hardest thing I’ve ever dealt with. I love him as much today as I ever did. No amount of time could ever change that simple fact of my life. We had two beautiful, magnificent years together, caught up in our own little bubble. He never met my family. I never met his. We didn’t make couple friends. We didn’t talk about the future. We didn’t need to. Our future was decided that first night, and it would take care of itself in due time. I honestly and naïvely believed that. Now, with hindsight, I realize the bubble was strategic on his part. He gave me everything he had to give, including no promise of tomorrow. Five years ago today, we watched the horror unfold on live television. A US-based cruise ship blown up by suicide bombers. Four thousand lives extinguished in a heartbeat. Our world permanently changed once again, our country declaring yet another war on terrorists. After 9/11 we thought we’d seen everything. We were wrong. “I have to go,” he said, grabbing the duffel that stood ready in the front hall closet. He called it his “go bag.” I’d thought nothing of it. “Where’re you going?” “I don’t know.” “When will you be back?” “I don’t know that either.” He held my face in his hands and gazed at me, seemingly trying to memorize my every feature. “I love you. I’ll always love you.” Then he kissed me as passionately as he ever had and was gone, out the door in a flash of camouflage. I never saw him again. I’m not his wife or even his fiancée, so no one notified me of his whereabouts. And three months after he left, when I found a way onto the base in a desperate quest for information, no one there could tell me anything either. I tried to locate his parents and other people he mentioned, but it was like they didn’t exist. I could find no record of a retired general named West in the Marine Corps, Army or Air Force. Furthermore, an exhaustive search for information on the John West I had known led nowhere. No high school, no college, no military service, no nothing. Sometimes I wonder if I dreamed the two years we spent together, doing mundane things like grocery shopping, cooking, watching TV and sleeping together after long days at work. But then I’d remember the blissful passion, the scorching pleasure, the desire that ruled us from the beginning, and I’d know I didn’t dream him. I didn’t dream us. We were real, and he was everything to me. Sitting on the floor in our apartment, surrounded by boxes, I take a few minutes before the movers arrive to memorize every detail of the place where we lived together. I’ve packed his things along with mine, and I’m moving home to New York. Today was my deadline. I gave it five years, and I simply can’t do it anymore. I can’t sit in our home among our things, waiting for something that’s never going to happen. It’s over. It’s time for me to move on. It’s probably long past time, if I’m being honest with myself. And though I know it’s the right move at the right time, that doesn’t mean my heart isn’t shattering all over again as I dismantle the place where we were us. My sister is getting married next month. I promised her I’d be home in time to hold her hand through the festivities. Other than occasional trips home for holidays and other occasions, I’ve been gone more than ten years. I bear no resemblance whatsoever to the girl who left home at eighteen seeking independence from her overbearing family at a faraway college out West. I accomplished all my goals, finishing college, landing a decent job and falling in love with the man of my dreams. I found out what happens when dreams come true and how painful it is when they blow up in your face. It’s time now to set new goals, to start over, to begin a life that doesn’t have John at the center of it the way it did here. It’ll be nice to be back with people who love me and care about me, even if they tend toward smothering at times. That’s looking rather good to me after years of loneliness and grief. The intercom sounds to let me know the movers are here. I pick myself up off the floor and steel my heart for the day ahead. I can do this. I’ve been through worse, and I’ll survive this the same way I’ve survived everything else. Despite my resolve, my eyes fill with tears as I press the button that opens the door downstairs to the movers. It doesn’t take them long to pack my belongings into their truck. I keep with me the things that can’t be replaced—precious photos, gifts he gave me, the clothing he left behind. After taking a final look around the apartment, I pack those boxes into my car, turn my apartment keys into the leasing office and head east, feeling as if I’m leaving behind everything that ever mattered to me. It’s like I’m losing him all over again. I cry all the way through the desert of Southern California and well into Arizona. I relive every minute I can remember, every conversation, every special moment. I think about what it was like to make love with him and wonder how I’ll ever to do that with anyone but him. Maybe I won’t. Maybe that part of my life ended with him, and even though I’m only twenty-eight now, I’m okay with that possibility. Once you’ve experienced perfection, it’s hard to imagine settling for anything less. The tears finally dry up somewhere in northern Arizona, but the ache inside… I take that with me all the way to New York, where I will try my very best to pick up the pieces of my shattered life and put them back together into some new version of myself. After all, what choice do I have?
