About GOLDILOCKS:

For Olivia Adams, the world has always been too big or too small. Forced to live her life caught between what she wanted for herself and the unfair choices and crazy obsession of those around her for as long as she could remember, Ollie has always felt confined and trapped. It was hard for her to imagine a future beyond the crushing control of those who wanted to make sure she paid the price for her role in a tragic accident that ruined several young lives. However, having no hope and living in a constant state of fear never stopped Ollie from dreaming of different ways to break free and how to reunite with the one person who always made her feel safe. Huck is the only one who ever made her feel like there was a place in his world, right by his side, that would fit her just right. The world has always forced Huck Snyder to be a guy who runs either too hot or too cold. Unwanted and barely tolerated, his temper burned hot and bright, often leading him into trouble. After the accident, he was tossed out, disowned, and forced to fend for himself. Struggling to survive, Huck quickly realized the only way he would make it was to freeze out every single memory and moment from his past. Especially those surrounding Ollie. He allowed his heart to harden into a block of ice and refused to let anyone close enough to melt it. Years have passed, and Huck has adjusted to the constant cold that permeates through his new life. He was in no way prepared for the only girl who could ever control his inner fire to show back up. Ollie is on the run and doesn't seem to mind the chilly reception she receives when she shows up unannounced on Huck's doorstep. Fire and ice no longer define Huck because when he's with Ollie, it's easy to remember that the temperature between the two of them has always been just right.

Review:

3.5 stars
***

This was an entertaining read. Goldilocks is a standalone book by Jay Crownover. This is Huck and Ollie's story. Huck was the bastard son of a rich, high-society family. He was raised with the family, but felt like an outcast among them, especially his stepmother and stepbrother. Ollie's mother was the family's housekeeper, so she grew up with Huck and they were very close. Huck's brother was evil to them both and possessive and abusive over Ollie. Their childhood was a nightmare, culminating in a tragic night that ripped them apart. Now, Ollie has finally broken free and runs to Huck, who is a senior in college. But Huck now hates her for what happened between them, despite a new attraction between them. Still, she is resiliant and won't give up on him. When their past comes back to haunt them, Huck and Ollie must join together, forgive past hurts, and a romance blossoms.

I liked this story. I did enjoy the first half a bit more than the second half. It felt like the pacing was a little off or I was just confused and expected more since the book ended at 88%. Still, I enjoyed Ollie and Huck's story. They had both been through so much and deserved to find peace and happiness. There was a lot of angst between them because of their past. But once they made up, I wanted a bit more discussion and more resolution to move beyond their hurts. I also felt like the end was a little too hfn for me. It kind of felt like a let down and I wanted a further ahead epilogue. Still, this was not a bad book. The story was very good and entertaining. I liked Huck and Ollie together and am hopeful they can make things work, despite not really having set plans for the future.

Overall, this was a pretty good book. I liked it and enjoyed Ollie and Huck's journey. I was very happy that they both could move beyond the hurts of their past to a happy relationship together. I look forward to more from Ms. Crownover in the future.
