Review Tour: Baby Daddy by Kendall Ryan

A hot and hilarious new standalone from New York Times bestseller Kendall Ryan.

We met in a trapped elevator.

Emmett was on his way to work, sophisticated and handsome in his tailored suit and tie. I was on my way to the sperm bank. Awkward, right? At thirty-five, my life hadn’t taken the path I thought it would and I was tired of waiting—I wanted a baby. And I was ready to take matters into my own hands to make it happen. After our ill-fated elevator encounter, Emmett insisted on taking me to dinner—he also insisted on something else—that I ditch my plan involving a turkey baster and let him do the job. He would be my baby daddy. He was a wealthy and powerful CEO with little interest in diapers or playdates. And since he didn’t want kids, I’d be on my own once his bun was in my oven, free to go my own way. But once his baby was inside me, it was like a switch had been flipped, and I got a whole lot more than I ever bargained for.

This full-length standalone contains a hot, swoonworthy hero, lots of playful banter and some hot baby-making ! Enjoy.

My Review:

3.5 stars
***

This was a cute, light read. I am a sucker for a pregnancy book. Maybe because I have 5 kids and can definitely identify with a pregnant heroine. So I was excited to read this book after reading the blurb and I did like it, even though I didn't love it. This is Emmett and Jenna's story. Jenna is a single woman who hasn't had great luck with relationships, so she decides to go the sperm donor route. She is in the elevator in her way up to the fertility clinic when the elevator gets stuck. Luckily, she gets stuck in there with a hot guy whose business is in the same building, Emmett. While stuck in the elevator, the two get to talking and he is attracted to her. So Emmett volunteers to get Jenna knocked up the old fashioned way. He has no interest in being a father because of his own daddy issues, but he wants to sleep with Jenna so he volunteers his services. Jenna sees the chance to have a handsome, educated sperm donor, and is attracted to him too, so she takes him up in the offer. Hilarity ensues as the two attempt to make a baby and end up falling in love along the way.

I liked the overall storyline going on here. Emmett and Jenna were not bad characters. It took me quite awhile to feel any connection or chemistry between them, but I did end up feeling their love by the end. Jenna was pretty insecure and couldn't imagine that Emmett might actually be attracted to her or like her. It stuck me as a bit odd, because what did she think he agreed to her plan for? What did she think he was getting out of the deal if not that he actually wanted to sleep with her? Her low confidence and doubt about herself was a little annoying and didn't line up with the fact that she was a woman who supposedly always took charge of her life and made things happen, including getting pregnant and being a single mom. But despite that, the story was cute, light and funny. The fact that Jenna owned a bookstore and Emmett's big box bookstore company was trying to buy it out, which neither of them knew was each other, stuck me as very "Who's Got Mail"-ish. The trying to conceive aspects were pretty close to true to life. I did think there was potential for the book to be deeper, but it mainly stayed on a more surface level. It was fluffy and an entertaining, easy read, but there wasn't much depth or character dimension. The story does have several time jumps, which added to that surface feel for me. Still, I did enjoy the humor. It was funny without trying too hard or being crude. Overall, I did enjoy the book, even though I didn't feel a ton of emotion or depth. Baby Daddy was a cute story and definitely worth reading!
