Born shrouded in the veil of the Primals, a Maiden as the Fates promised, Seraphena Mierel’s future has never been hers. Chosen before birth to uphold the desperate deal her ancestor struck to save his people, Sera must leave behind her life and offer herself to the Primal of Death as his Consort.

However, Sera’s real destiny is the most closely guarded secret in all of Lasania—she’s not the well protected Maiden but an assassin with one mission—one target. Make the Primal of Death fall in love, become his weakness, and then…end him. If she fails, she dooms her kingdom to a slow demise at the hands of the Rot.

Sera has always known what she is. Chosen. Consort. Assassin. Weapon. A specter never fully formed yet drenched in blood. A monster. Until him. Until the Primal of Death’s unexpected words and deeds chase away the darkness gathering inside her. And his seductive touch ignites a passion she’s never allowed herself to feel and cannot feel for him. But Sera has never had a choice. Either way, her life is forfeit—it always has been, as she has been forever touched by Life and Death.

This book was so good! One of my favorites of the year! A Shadow in Ember is the first book in the Flesh and Fire series. It is related to somehow the Blood and Ash series in a way that is not yet clear to me. They are set in the same world and have similar mythology going on, but I can't tell how the series will turn out to be related. But that didn't matter, this book can be read as a standalone and I completely understood what was going on. It starts off with a bang, which differs from the way the first book in the Blood and Ash series seemed more like the set up to that series. This book is it's own story already and a lot happens right away. This was the great start to a new series!

This book was Ash and Sera's story. Sera is the daughter of the Queen in her kingdom. But because of a contract between her kingdom and the Primal (super powerful god) of death, she has been raised seperately from her family to become the consort to that God when she comes of age. Her childhood has been not one of a princess, but one of a Maiden and assassin. The Rot has come to the kingdom and is killing all the plants and animals, leaving the people starving. Her family believes that only Sera can save the kingdom from the Rot, by marrying the Primal of Death and killing him, and the only way to kill him is to get him to fall in love with her. But the Primal of Death refuses to accept her as his consort and doesn't show up again. in the meantime, Sera meets Ash, a young God and has a mysterious connection to him. But they both have secrets and when they come to life, both of their worlds are changed forever.

I really liked both Ash and Sera. She was a little stubborn at times for my taste, but I can see her growing as a person.  I can tell they are going to be a great, strong couple. They are still working things out between them, but I can't wait to see how their relationship develops in the upcoming books. They are sexy and have great chemistry together already.  Overall, this was a fast paced, addictive, hard to put down read. And holy cow was that some ending. I was left wanting more and thinking about it for days. I can't wait for more from this fun, fantasy series and from Ms. Armentrout in the future!
